Three years after its release, it remains doubtful that any artist will outline their political and personal outlook as concisely as Peaches did when she called her album Impeach My Bush. Having her return in 2009 seems only right and proper.
This, after all, looks set to be remembered as the year in which synthesizer-playing women took over the world. More than that, though, what strikes you on I Feel Cream is just how merely existing in a post-Gossip musical firmament has brought the Toronto singer’s carnally empowered monologues within waving distance of the mainstream. And yet, with the exception of the clammy, catchy remonstrations of Talk to Me, this remains an album firmly rooted in the lineage of great electronic dance music. As such, the producer James Ford is an inspired choice, bringing his armoury of Simian Mobile Disco tricks to the pulsing melancholia of Lose You and Take You Out. Only on Serpentine and Billionaire does the agent provocateur of yore truly let rip, but if it serves to accentuate some of Peaches’s less eye-catching talents, that’s no bad thing.
