Clementi:Complete Piano Sonatas, Vol 3: Opp 13, 20, 23, 31 - Howard Shelley (piano)
Perhaps history is right to marginalise the Italian Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) and to treat his piano sonatas as a footnote to the composer they greatly influenced, Beethoven. You can also argue that Shelley’s wonderfully brilliant, expressive performances make them seem better than they are. But then a work such as the F minor, Op 13, No 6, with its dark, agitated allegro, angular slow movement and galloping finale, stops you short. This is powerful, original music in its own right, not a mere anticipation of greater things to come. The adagio of Op 23, No 2, shows Clementi, who was called “the father of the pianoforte” on his gravestone, a master of the art of drawing riches from a three-note tag by subtle variations of harmony and texture. Even the pieces written to amuse the young lady pianists of London have striking energy.
