Albert Hammond Jr: Yours to Keep
Admitting that some of the material that makes up his first solo album had
been rejected by the Strokes may not have been the wisest move by the band’s
guitarist, but such innocent openness seems appropriate on hearing Yours to
Keep.
It is hard to imagine Julian Casablancas crooning soft-hearted tunes such as
Cartoon Music for Super Heroes, inspired equally by Brian Wilson and Walt
Disney, or the cutesy Call an Ambulance, which features whistling and a
ukulele. Even the quaintly pastoral sleeve art looks self-effacing, but the
tentative Scared and Hard to Live (In the City), an initially wobbly tribute
to early New Order that unexpectedly lurches into a trad jazz section, would
sit well on any Strokes album.
