Michael J Sheehy and the Hired Mourners: With These Hands
What we have here is a concept album about a fictional boxer, set in the early 1960s. It’s subtitled The Rise and Fall of Francis Delaney, but there seems to be considerably more fall than rise in Frankie Delaney’s career. Delaney isn’t a bad boxer, but he just isn’t a winner; he takes a dive in a crucial fight and things start to unravel. We follow him as he negotiates the ruthless boxing world, dodging seedy promoters as well as punches. It’s the perfect landscape for Sheehy’s slow, dark, spiky, atmospheric music, which on occasion here wanders closer to Tom Waits territory than ever before. With guest spots from Sandy Dillon and Gemma Ray adding an extra dimension, this is Sheehy’s most satisfying album since 2000’s Sweet Blue Gene. ME
