Paul Weller: Hit Parade
Hit Parade is the first Weller compilation to encompass the Jam, the Style
Council and solo work, and you’d expect the later stuff to suffer by
comparison, especially as the album eschews chronology and rubs the silky
pop of the Council up against the urgent rock of the Jam. It’s a brave move,
but it pays off: the section that takes us through Down in the Tube Station
at Midnight, Peacock Suit, The Changingman and Eton Rifles reveals that
Weller’s “comfortable” period still bristles with energy. Walls Come
Tumbling Down segues nicely into his masterpiece, That’s Entertainment. Put
Speak Like a Child next to Start! and, instead of the former seeming too
smooth or the latter too spiky, you notice the common ground — the way
Child’s horns reflect Start!’s guitars. Not just a greatest hits, then, but
a useful opportunity for re-evaluation.
