Eagles of Death Metal: Death by Sexy...
If you look on Eagles of Death Metal simply as a fun side project for Queens
of the Stone Age’s front man, Josh Homme, then you can regard Death by
Sexy... as a bit of a laugh. If, however, you remember that some artists
(Homme among them) have done some of their best work in supposed side
projects, then you would have to regard Death by Sexy... as a wasted
opportunity. This album is so nearly so wonderful: a seemingly endless
supply of killer riffs attached to a pop-rock-boogie hybrid that echoes the
finest moments of ZZ Top and T Rex. These songs should burst out of the
speakers. Instead, they crawl, their energy sapped by a tinny mix that
squeezes voice, guitars, drums and even the bass into the same tinny
frequency. What a shame.
