Black Keys: Chulahoma
Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, a two-man blues outfit from Ohio, take
on the material of the late David “Junior” Kimbrough. Kimbrough was an
overlooked original, and the Keys’ down-to-earth style suits his odd,
deceptively stumbling songs, especially their terrific takes on My Mind is
Rambling and Have Mercy on Me. Although the uncommitted may prefer last
year’s excellent Kimbrough tribute album Sunday Nights, which featured
reworkings by such luminaries as the Stooges and Cat Power, this mini-album
proves enjoyable enough.
It is odd, though, to hear young men playing tracks widely unheard until the
1990s that sound like songs from the late 1960s.
