Blitzen Trapper: Field Rexx
Not even famous in their home town of Portland, Oregon, Blitzen Trapper
recorded this excellent album in their shabby garage. The result is somewhat
tidier, as the singer and guitarist Eric Earley and his five cohorts switch
between styles with a facility that defies their current obscurity. The
jittery Love I Exclaim! and the delightfully chaotic Apple Trees are obvious
standouts. The languid Summer Twin features a nicely inappropriate disco
whistle, while Dirty Pearls is warped bluegrass. Anyone fascinated by Beck’s
more organic recordings or lamenting the impending retirement of Grandaddy
should investigate this intriguing blend of folk, wildly playful indie and
whatever else the Trappers have been enjoying.
