Graham Coxon: Love Travels at Illegal Speeds
Scuzzy yet brilliantly inventive, Graham Coxon’s guitar playing provided the
antidote to Damon Albarn’s oh-so-clever pop polish. Coxon’s solo albums
revelled in the opportunity to roll around in the sonic dirt, with the
result that — singles aside — they often sounded rather tossed off.
Love Travels at Illegal Speeds makes a conscious effort to apply some of
Albarn’s songwriting precision, resulting in his best set by a country
(house) mile. You still can’t quite escape the feeling that he is slumming
it with his Cockney punk delivery, but now the scruffy new wave noise —
Standing on My Own, Gimme Some Love and You & I — has a crisp focus.
Some pleasant Paul Weller/Ray Davis-style ballads give proceedings a nice
balance, particularly Flights to the Sea (Lovely Rain), while the pleading
rocker Tell it Like it Is rivals anything that Coxon did with Blur.
