Jim White: Drill a Hole in That Substrate and Tell Me What You See
JIM WHITE’s 2001 album, No Such Place, included production work by Morcheeba.
Unlikely though this collaboration was, it created the irresistible bouncy
brilliance of 10 Miles to Go on a 9 Mile Road, a song all right-thinking
people should own. On Drill a Hole, White has opted for the more sympathetic
production skills of Joe Henry. As a result, nothing has the immediacy of 10
Miles, but the virtually whispered Southern-gothic fairy tales that are
White’s forte are given their best-ever setting: the fairground organ on
Bluebird, the soulful backing vocals on If Jesus Drove a Motor Home, the
deranged rockabilly guitar on Alabama Chrome, and — best of all — the duet
with Aimee Mann on Static on the Radio, a collaboration that demands to be
further explored.
