Wiley: Treddin' on Thin Ice
They may share a label, but relations between Wiley and Dizzee Rascal seem
strained. The latter recently spoke admiringly (if cautiously) about his
former partner in rhyme; the former namechecks Dizzee on the score-settling
Reasons (“Hate is a strong word/Why do you hate me?). So far, so confusing.
And, when you’ve made a debut album as thrilling as this, surely
unnecessary. For Treddin’ is too good to need the distraction of a feud
(with which UK garage is wearisomely rife). It may lack the urgency and
brutal musical/lyrical attack of Dizzee’s debut, but Wiley shows, on tracks
such as the SWV-sampling Special Girl, the hilarious riposte of Wot Do You
Call It?, the self-addressed Pick UR Self Up and Reasons itself, that he’s
got his own story to tell, and it’s a gripping one.
