Grab an Italian masterpiece for less
Amy Winehouse appeared to throw a punch at a member of the audience at the Glastonbury rock festival last night, writes Jenny Booth.
The troubled Camden-based singer climbed down to the pit in front of the stage to meet fans while she sang Rehab, the final song of her set. She was captured on film apparently scuffling with an unseen reveller.
Her spokesman said that the singer was provoked when a fan tried to lay hands on her trademark beehive hairdo. "The 'lashing out' was when someone tried to grab her hair and she reacted," the spokesman said.
Footage of the incident did not clearly show what provoked her lunge. The spokesman added that at least 75,000 people watched and that organisers had never seen the field so full.
Police said today that they had received no complaint of assault after the gig, and that no investigation had been launched.
During her performance Winehouse could not resist speaking of her imprisoned husband Blake Fielder-Civil, telling the audience: “My husband is out of jail in two weeks.”
But despite the rambling banter between songs, music critics said that Winehouse seemed on top form in an otherwise trouble-free set on the Pyramid stage.
Recently diagnosed with emphysema, she overcame her troubles in front of 80,000 fans and sang an hour-long set, including hits Tears Drying On Their Own, Back To Black and You Know I’m no Good.
Meanwhile, multi-platinum selling artist Jay-Z answered his critics with a show-stealing performance full of swagger and bombast.
In April, Noel Gallagher of Oasis condemned the booking of Jay-Z to headline the festival, declaring: “I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong."
The crowd roared with laughter as Jay-Z opened his set with a clip of Gallagher voicing criticism of the rapper’s performance.
With a wry grin on his face, Jay-Z bounded on to the stage and performed a satirical cover version of the Oasis hit Wonderwall.
The 38-year-old - real name Shawn Carter - then powered his way threw an hour and 15 minutes of hits, including Hard Knock Life, Encore and 99 Problems - while his wife, R&B star Beyonce Knowles, watched from the side of the stage.
Rallying the 80,000 fans before him, the rapper shouted to the crowd: “So they say you guys didn’t want me to be here tonight. They said you guys weren’t into hip-hop.”
He thanked the crowd for embracing him and said: “This is a beautiful moment, I’m glad to share it with each and every one of you”.
The New York artist's appearance was a radical departure from the indie rock and guitar bands commonly associated with Glastonbury.
Michael Eavis, who runs the festival on his dairy farm near Glastonbury in Somerset, admitted they had “stuck their necks out on this one" in a bid to reach out to a younger audience.
After sluggish ticket sales, the gamble appeared to have paid off however when the show finally sold out.
