Jack White, the White Stripes/the Raconteurs
Best Headlining Glastonbury in 2005 was probably the pinnacle. Coming from playing the little side stages at English festivals to playing to 100,000 people was a feat that was not lost on Meg and me. We injected the set with so many odd and obscure songs — some of them nobody had ever really heard — yet we still got an immense reaction. It was staggering to us that two people could hold the attention of so many in that way.
Worst In general, I don’t like playing in the daytime. Maybe playing an acoustic guitar in the park is okay, but electric music doesn’t feel right in the sunlight. I’d much rather be in a tent during the day. The Raconteurs ended up doing a lot of daytime sets last year, which wasn’t ideal.
I remember playing Coachella was pretty tough, especially for a pale, vampire-looking guy like me!

Best It has to be my first Glastonbury in 2003. It was like nothing I’d experienced before as a music fan or just as a person; it was so magical. I could feel my eyes dancing and absorbing everything in sight. Everyone seemed like they were so open to all and beyond. Free love and peace.
Worst It was 2005 at Leeds festival. I lost my tent and, of course, it was pitch black at night. What made it worse was that everyone that year seemed to have bought the same tent. One night, I think I fell over every guy rope and peg I passed. I woke up the next morning looking like I had purple tie-dye leggings on from all the bruises!
Ricky Wilson, Kaiser Chiefs
Best I fondly remember the times when Nick (Hodgson, the band’s drummer) and I would try to get into Leeds festival without paying. We’d try anything, but saying we were in bands seemed to work. One time, I did an interview with Melody Maker as the singer of Gay Dad, which got me backstage.
Worst I narrowly escaped a beating one year at Leeds. As we were walking out, one of my friends picked up a bottle and threw it, and it made a big bang as it landed on this burger van. These stocky-looking guys came out from round the back, and they were livid. I just put my arm around the nearest girl and played innocent. We were saved by a random guy who came over the hill and somehow calmed everybody down. I’ve got no idea who he was, but he was like an angel!
Emily Eavis, Glastonbury co-organiser
Best Jay-Z last year was one of the most anticipated gigs we have ever had at Glastonbury, and for that reason it was easily the most exciting. It really reignited things. Everyone pushed the boat out with that show and it highlighted why Glastonbury is quite different. It was up there with some of the best Glastonbury performances, like Kings of Leon in 2003, Elbow in 2008, David Bowie in 2000 and Johnny Cash in 1994.
