You probably don’t get to where Dolly Parton is today without knowing when to dispense a little self-deprecating humour. Trying to locate a mysterious metallic rattling sound as she sat at her sparkling piano, Parton — barely a size above zero in a tiny yellow dress — finally ventured, “It might be my brain.”
In its way, it signalled a progression of sorts. These days, the only person you hear making Dolly Parton jokes is Parton. Amid endless anecdotes underscoring the simple ways of her Tennessee upbringing, you almost forgot that beneath the peroxide mane lies a formidable business brain. If the success of Dollywood — her record-breaking theme park — didn’t alert you to her business acumen, then her decision to tour Britain on the week of Mother’s Day surely confirmed it.
Indeed, it was a well-oiled set aimed at the older end of her constituency. Recent stripped-down albums such as The Grass Is Blue may have depicted an artist in retreat from Vegas-style self-parody, but when it comes to selling the brand, Parton the businesswoman reasserted herself over the proto-feminist singer-songwriter who challenged the Nashville status quo with songs such as Eagle When She Flies. As such, it was no surprise that Jolene received a brief, perfunctory airing so early on — clearing the way for yet more stories about her childhood. Enlivened by Parton’s use of a dulcimer, Tennessee Mountain Home and Train Train briefly arrested the sense that her band of Nashville old hands had long since forgotten what city they were in, before normal service was resumed.
Introducing Coat Of Many Colours, a song about the coat her mother made for her, Parton declared proudly, “My mother was one of those special people that can tell you anything and make it sound good.” That it’s clearly an inherited talent was obvious from the way she read the story on the autocue by her feet.
As the intermission drew nearer, it seemed that fields of Parton’s past were emptied of corn. Little did we know she was just getting started. Turn! Turn! Turn! and Those Were The Days were practically invisible for the cabaret stardust sprinkled on them. I Will Always Love You found new ways to match the terror of Whitney Houston’s version — thanks to a cameo from an Elvis impersonator. Then she proceeded to do to John Lennon’s Imagine what Houston had once done to her song. Why? To paraphrase Jolene, just because she could.

Dolly did a great show in sheffield we have waited for this since 1981 and it was worth every penny
cheryl, nottingham, england
Ive been a fan of Dolly for 20 years and my dream of seeing her finally came true on Wednesday night at Newcastle. The show was superb and was one of my best ever nights out. 12,000 people filled the stadium and with the cheers, the singing and the standing ovation Dolly received i think the 12,000 there will agree with me. Tickets were a bit steep and no close up of her on the big screens was a let down but YES i would do it again. Thanks for a brilliant night Dolly.

Saw Dolly in Newcastle on Wednesday evening she is still the best country music lady, and that is what she is A LADY so stop knocking her, get off her back . She did a perfect performance as far as
10.000 newcastle fans were concerned.
Lydia, Newcastle,
I didn't see the show, but do agree with the rewiewer that Parton can be too ostentacious for her own good. At this point in her career the self-depricating boob jokes and incessantly repeated stories of her upbringing are just tired cliche. I've been a fan of Dolly's for almost 30 years now and am waiting patiently for her to challenge her fans with something other than her usual schtick. It's no longer a shock--and hardly interesting--to see woman with huge breasts, bleach blonde hair, and too much make-up.

Give the poor woman a break...she's doing an extensive tour at a heavy pace and although she looks a lot younger, she's 61! Touring is grueling...and she's committed to providing a good time by showing her upbeat best side to everyone. When you're 61, are you going to be "at the top of your game and able to keep up with the pace you had 30 years before?" Not all of it is lip synched. She still has it. "Little Sparrow" is completely live and AMAZING. Dolly, come back to the USA where there aren't so many haters and unforgiving people! They must still think you are the same age as the last time you toured their country! We love you here...and I, for one, don't mind if your show is "enhanced" in places because you entertain me, make me happy to be there, tell me stories, and yes, YOU DO SING LIVE TOO!!!!! You are the best!!!
