David Sinclair at Wembley Arena

It has been six years since the ill-advised poster campaign that posed the question “Who is Dave Matthews?”, and most people in Britain are still none the wiser. It hasn’t stopped the South African-born bandleader from Charlottesville, Virginia, from continuing to sell many millions of records in America, or from filling Wembley Arena on the only British date of his current European tour.
Matthews is the ultimate antidote to the cult of celebrity. Impervious to all known varieties of hype, he inspires adoration, loyalty and respect purely for his abilities as a singer and songwriter and for the incredibly developed musical talents of his band, which he convened in 1991. Standing at the front of the huge Wembley stage in his plain jeans and brown shoes, Matthews looked more ordinary than most of the people in the audience.
He complained of having a “scratchy” throat, but promised to “squeak my way as best I can for y’all”. Naturally, he did far more than that, singing in a gruff, soulful voice, full of hard-earned experience while playing scene-setting parts on an acoustic guitar with a discreet but distinctive touch. The five men arranged behind and around him were hardly a conventional backing band, more a gathering of virtuoso talents, all bending their skills in the service of the collective whole.
Located in the American “jam band” tradition started by the Grateful Dead, numbers such as When the World Ends and You Might Die Trying were beautiful songs that drifted by precise degrees into long instrumental odysseys. The rhythm section of the bass player Stefan Lessard and drummer Carter Beauford seemed able to underpin any sequence or time signature, however innocuous, with a patchwork of effortlessly joyful syncopations. The ambidextrous Beauford in particular was an astounding player, and this was one of the rare occasions when one felt slightly let down by the lack of a set-piece drum solo.
However, there were plenty of solos elsewhere – from the violinist Boyd Tinsley, the keyboard player Butch Taylor, the trumpeter and trombonist Rashawn Ross and the saxophonist LeRoi Moore – all overseen with a quiet authority by Matthews, who maintained an extraordinary balance between the flow of the ensemble and the free expression of the individuals.
The guitarist Tom Morello, formerly of Rage Against the Machine, joined the band for two numbers – #41 and Satellite – during which he conjured some extremely strange and colourful sounds from his guitar and pedalboard.
Drawing with equal facility on the techniques of folk, jazz and rock, the band played for well over two hours, by which time it seemed as if they had barely scratched the surface of either their repertoire or their extraordinary fund of musical talent.

Greetings from Norway.
I attended this amazing event together with my wife, last year we saw Dave solo at Hammersmith and I remember his fantastic words; next year I might bring the guys along and he did!!
I have been following this band for the last years and it is a pain in the ass, it have completly taken over my sences of other bands / musicians, with the exeption of some great jazz people, like Bela Fleck and so on, but then again, they are Daves favourites too, hehe.
What I mean is, I have a great selection of music, but my players are bearly open for others than Dave's music.
What a horriffic fantastic band, best ever since Zeppelin pulled off and maybe better then that too.
This consert was just as expected "exeptionally good".
Looking forward to next and hoping they will continue to take the oversea tour every year from now on.

I've been a die hard Dave fan for a good few years now and this was my fifth gig. It's so nice to hear positive comments about the awesome talent that is DMB. Wembley was superb as was every other gig I've seen. Obviously i'm a little biased but having read the reviews of the Kings gig last year, it's nice to read a review that is truthful and focusses on the positive aspects of the band.
Can't wait for them to return and convert more non believers.
Paul, PLYMOUTH,
Finally...after 12 years of waiting, thinking that I was the only DMB fan in Europe (well ok then, The Netherlands) and now so many great reviews....This concert in Wembley was just great, awesome you name it... Pitty though that the security people were taking their job way too serious...jeez can you imagine that one would like to Stand Up while hearing this great music? So I did and after a few secs I was told to sit down ...amazing. But the great performance of DMB made this bummer good....Made it even better for myself....just booked my tickets to the show of Dave Matthews Band on October 2nd in the USA (Hollywood Bowl wow.....) because I think thát's really the place to be when it concerns DMB. I can already hear y'all singing..... step into the light guys! Sorry Europe...

This Dave Matthews Band on May 30 in Wembley London is the BEST concert I have ever seen and heard in my life! And I'm an oldie (from the '60 s) and I've seen and heard many bands over the past 45 years LIVE in concert, incl. Beatles, Stones, Bee Gees, Beach Boys, Peter Green & Fleetwood Mack, Eric Clapton, Crosby, Stills & Nash > even Graham Nash, while he was a singer and guitarist in the Hollies during the early '60's...and many many more bands...but this DMB concert was the best ever. They're really the most exciting LIVE band.
I have never seen such an enthusiastic public out of diverse countries such as Scandinavia, South-Africa, Italy, of course the UK and The USA and Holland (where I'm from) see and hear enjoing themselves with this GREAT BAND, The Dave Matthews Band.
Ingrid Franke, The Hague, Holland
they are the most exciting live band.
people talk of bands jamming and playing solos, but these guys take it to a new level whilst never loosing their way like the "jam bands" do.
its a crime that DMB are not a hit over here, but then why would they be? it was their first UK gig in 10 years.
their music is best discovered , not promoted.
wednesday was a superb gig that built and built and by the end there was no question of their greatness and that Drummer carter beaufort is the most inventive and capable drummer in the music scene
Paul A, Henley,
I was so pleased to read this report as it hit the nail on the head. I have seen Dave Matthews many times before on his own and once with the band and every time has been an unbelievable musical experience. He is phenomenal live, pitch perfect throughout and outstanding guitar playing. Every show is at least 2 hours, real value for money and just watching these guys jamming so naturally is a pleasure. This is real music and judging by the Wembley crowd, the show was a huge hit.
Ben, Bushey,
Having seen the man perform on two previous occasions, it was a real treat to see Dave Matthews with his band. The show, for me stood head and shoulders with the best i have seen in the past. His musicianship is second to none and the band are every bit as good. I felt that the band could have done more dates in the UK but we have to be thankful that we got the chance to see this outstanding performance.
Gary Johnson, Aldershot, UK
A glowing and very apt review of a superb - and at times, enlightning - show.
