David Sinclair at Wembley Stadium

On the day after their performance as part of the Live Earth event at Wembley Stadium, Metallica returned to put on a soirée of their own at the same massive venue.
“It’s a little different today. I feel a different energy,” the singer and guitarist James Hetfield told the 65,000 fans, who roared their approval and shook horn-shaped fists above their heads as if cracking a whip in unison. Platitudes about saving the planet were certainly not on the menu.
This outing has been dubbed the “Sick of the Studio” tour, because it has afforded Metallica a break from the lengthy process of writing and recording their next album, tentatively scheduled for release next year. But it seemed that the group were also sick of their last album, St Anger, which, in America, remains the lowest-selling they have yet released. In a show lasting well over two hours the Californian quartet did not include a single track from it.
Instead, the original monsters of rock went back to the tried and tested with a holding operation of exemplary focus and intensity, but little in the way of innovation or invention.
Their music has traditionally explored extremes of speed, density and volume, with lyrics dwelling on the twin themes of death and destruction. All bases were covered with the opening salvo of Creeping Death, a song about the systematic killing of firstborn sons.
Hetfield who, with his long, greying beard, looked rather like an Egyptian Pharaoh, was ably assisted by the crowd as he barked out the injunction to Die by My Hand. Lars Ulrich hammered away at his drums, tongue lolling, face and hair plastered in sweat like a marathon runner close to the end of his tether, as they rolled straight into For Whom the Bell Tolls.
There was no drum solo, but the orc-like Robert Trujillo unleashed a rumbling bass guitar “doodle” of superhuman dexterity, while the guitarist Kirk Hammett supplied moments of similarly heroic endeavour throughout, albeit with a more mercurial touch.
There were occasional oases of calm during numbers such as Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters when, the ban on smoking notwithstanding, a mass of twinkling lighters were raised aloft by the crowd.
But as darkness fell, a succession of pyrotechnic explosions rent the air and the stage was turned into a raging battlefield of sound and light for One and Enter Sandman, a dramatic close to a committed and rigorously executed rifle through the band’s back pages.

5******* show, atmosphere was electric!!! DIE... DIE.... DIE...
cant wait for next tour im not guna miss 1 show!!!
Reece , essex, england
7* GIG!!! Guys did wonderful, the best Metallica concert I have ever seen and I have seen a lot. The sound was perfect and audience incredible!!!! Memory Remains (especially) will not be forgotten for a very long time!!! It is a pity there was nothing played from St. Anger album, maybe next time!!! Can't wait for next album and brand new tour 2008! See Yeah from Ireland!!!
Jaro, Cork, Ireland/Poland,
David Sinclair, 3 stars?all i have to say is,you are a mug!words can't give that gig the credibilty it deserves mate
Will P, Hitchin, England
5 Star gig!! 100% metallica. What an opening, Creeping Death and Bellz! The crowd singing back at the end of Memory was superb and No Leaf Clover was a pleasent suprise! Ok James screwed up the lyrics to whiplash but who cares it was still fantastic.
Mark, Bootle, Merseyside
3 stars? you´re kidding, tom hughes. it was a great concert with a great and metallica-hungry audience... i´ve never seen or heard such tons of crowds (e.g. memory remains), and i saw a lot of metalli-gigs. battery, justice, whiplash & horsemen were fantastic that evening... 5 stars from germany!
Lars Woehrmann, Bremen, Germany
3 stars! Was Dave Sinclaire having a snooze somewhere up the back of the stadium? I have been going to gigs for 15 years and seen Metallica 5 times and this gig was one of the best I have ever been to. Dave Sinclair doesn't have a clue which begs the question: Why send someone to a review a gig when they seem to nothing about the band or the music?
Anthony, Skegness, UK
Definately a 5 star concert! This guys review made me laugh! What sort of show makes him give 4 or 5 stars? To hear Orion, Disposable and Justice was priceless. Memory, One and Puppets were also fantastic. The sound on the floor, 20m back from the golden circle (which was way too big) was loud and clear. Hard luck to the people up high and at the back, Wembley staduim was MASSIVE but absolutely rocked! Huge thank you to Metallica, definately the best time i've seen them. Can't wait to see them next year.
Alan, Dorchester, Dorset
Creeping Death - About killing first born sons??? That song is based on the Bible, more specifically, the Ten Commandments. Dave Sinclair, you have no idea mate (all due respect). Don't just berate a band on things that are plain wrong. Tom Hughes from London, you're spot on!
Metallica rule all - Greatest Band of All Time!! Sixth time I've seen them, and probably the best. They just get better with age!
Kenneth Love, Glasgow, Scotland
3 star?!!! was he even in London that night?!!! they were great, couldn't be better that that. Metallica in Wembley showed the world again that they are still the best metal band ever.
thank u Mrtallica, thank u for making the best night of my life.
can't wait for the next gig!
Eli, London,
I've been a Metallica fan since I turned 14 so for almost 11 years. Live at Wembley was the first time I saw them playing live and I found it really great. The thing I liked mostly was crowd singing all the great songs along with James. I was also happy I didn't hear a single track from St. Anger. Does anyone know if there'll be any official DVD from that gig?
Piotr, London, England
This is the 6th time I've seen them since 1992 and I have to say probably the best. They were simply unbelievable. Chatted to a few fans since and everybody seems to be of the same opinion. The setlist was superb, I was in heaven to Orion and Disposable Heroes. Dave Sinclair obviously knows little about the band by his explanation of 'Creeping Death'. He knows even less about the genre. "Innovation and Invention"? Maybe you should get down to Fabric mate. Give me the world's greatest rock band betling out their classics at full decibel, to a sea of adoring and exhilierated fans in the world's premier venue. Marvellous. Looking forward to round 7.
Tom Hughes, London, UK
As a metal veteran been listening to Metallica since '84 and seen them many times. Agree that they were excellent at Wembley and having put their much publicised problems behind them, seem to be really back on form. Crowd were well up for it which always makes a good gig. Was impressed with Wembley - although saw 'tallica in Munich Olympicstadium in 2004 and the beer is far better in Germany! Roll on new album and tour!!
M, Andover, Hants
WOW!!!! What a show!!!!! i gotta say, 'Tallica rocked, at Wembley, i was at the back and the atmosphere was intence!!!! the sound was good, but the beer was weak:(, 'Tallica were on great form, played all the Greats( nuffin from StAnger thankfully) pyro's were wicked!!! faultless set, YEAH METALLICA RULE!!!!!!!!!!!, Thanks Guys for a great show:)
Darren Snell, Newquay, Cornwall
H.I.M was a good warm up band. Can´t wait to see them again...
Trix, London,
The sound was OK at the front, maybe it was worse for those in the cheap seats - shouldn't be so tight with ur money.
Marco, London,
I wasn't even there or in the country for that matter, but I saw them on the St. Anger tour and they played alot of classics then too. But if you don't like the new album just remember that they cannot release Master again and again. I love Kill em' All but i grew with the band as well. So when you go to a Metallica show you will see twenty years of one of the greatest metal bands of all time.
Garrett Schumacher, Carson City, Nevada U.S.A
this was the second time that i have seen metallica and i must say they didnt dissapoint me.memory remains will stay in my head because of the way the crowd sang the end of the song and the way james hetfield just stood in awe as we all sang.he then said this is why we do what we do and that is gud enough for me they are a top band and always will be.cant wait for them to return to england and quickly.
steve robinson, torquay, devon
hey.....he/she didnt mention the crowd at the end of memory remains...it was like the greatest part of the night!!!! hetfield was even shocked!!!!
stil gives me goosebumps..."daadadaaaada"
Nathan, Carterton,
Play more from St Anger? Please, the album isn't great at all..maybe 2 tracks worth a listen.
The gig was great, the band have been doing this for years so you cant expect anything less than greatness.
Maybe our friend david would rather see Robbie Williams singing about angels than rock gods like metallica singing about systematic killings of firstborn sons.
I have just noticed a column on this page ''must have CDs for summer 2007'' Travis are on top of the list.... i guess that says it all really.
Stuart, London,
whilst i have been a big fan-since 84 I have never experienced such poor sound quality, which is down to tenical / design problems at the stadium judging from reviews of recent concerts there. I was up on level 5 and could hardly make out the songs until the choruses came along! But judging from the reaction of the fans on ground level (going mental) it must of been good down there. Any one else agree? ( and yes I gonna get myself down there next time around).
andrew beard, southampton,
They'd be better with David Hasselhoff on guitar instead of Dave Mustaine
David, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Favourite band so you will know my opinion. Superb again!!
mark, worthing, uk
2 stars seems a little harsh, if we are to consider their performances over the last few years. It appears that all members of the band are back on form.
When the audience reacted in such an enthusiastic and electric manner, can we really be disappointed with this performance?
After seeing many bands of different genres i can hand on heart say thta this gig was the best i have been to, for raw energy, crowd atmosphere and general enjoyment!
*****
Matt Johnson, Paignton, Devon
I turned 18 just 3 days after seeing Metallica and seeing them was the best celebration I've ever, ever had. Being surrounded by true fans and veteran rockers was beautiful, the atmosphere was amazing and I couldn't fault ANYTHING. Just pure, pure brilliance. What a day! I don't know what else to say really, but anyone who went KNOWS it was a 5 star gig.
You were not just seeing Metallica. You were seeing THE Metallica at a new peak with true fans of all ages, loving every second.
Jack, Reading,
Mark from Cardiff appears to not be the biggest fan in the World. They played four songs from the Black album in Enter Sanman, Sad But True, Nothing Else Matters and The Unforgiven!
Brilliant gig. Dynamic, ferocious and Hetfield's interaction with the crowd is always first rate. We're all the Metallica family!
Nader Khalifa, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
Metallica at Wembley was one of the most amazing musical experiences of my life! There was no corner of the stadium which wasn't completely vibrating with excitement throughout the whole set. Sandman was incredible, One was fantastic and Memory Remains had most of us in tears! Treasured memories, can't wait for the next tour!
John, Solihull, west midlands
what a show, what a venue, what energy from the band and the crowd. this was the fourth time and most certainly the best time that me and my son have seen them. we were awastruck at first by the size of the stadium but that pailed into insignificance when the band performed. to many good tracks to single out. we cant wait until they return.
dave hudson, hartlepool, cleveland
Metallica were absolutley amazing as ever.
The crowds treatment of support act HIM seemed harsh but Metallica's performance was excellent.
Cant wait to see them again.
Even the wembley prices wernt as bad as i thought and im a tight fisted geordie.
Matt, Newcastle, Northumberland
As a first time attendee of a Metallica concert, I was thoroughly impressed with the band's ability to work the crowd, sing/play like it sounds on the records and play for over 2 hours.
Everyone was having a great time, and I would say they were more than happy with the setlist of oldies but goodies.
Good job to Metallica and Wembley staff for a fantastic event!!! I'll definitely be coming back to the next one....
Alesha, Edinburgh, Scotland
Without a doubt a 5 star gig! A brilliant set list, covered the greats, and even Memory Remains (not usually a favourite of mine) was electric, probably due to the crowds participation during the "La la la laa" parts! This was the 4th time I've seen them in the last 4 years, and it just makes me want to see them more. And to the critics who say they're "too old and past it", this should act as an eye opener.
I can't wait for the new album, from the 2 songs i've heard from it it sounds like another classic.
Roll on 2008, a new album, a new tour, and another couple of hundred pounds to fork out to see them again :-)
Thankyou Metallica for another great night and being influences to millions of people
steve, Bristol,
Was this guy at the same gig that I was?
Looks like someone's been smoking the whacky-baccy if they think Wembley wasn't amazing.
"Lacked invention"? These songs were written around 20 years ago, and they hold their ground when compared to songs today (Not that there's much around at the moment anyway)
Like the first comment said, I'm sure Spice Girls is much more suited to this reviewer.
Scotty, Ipswich,
Probably the best cocert of the year on the planet, from the most underated band on the planet and in the best stadium on the planet!
Metallica Rock it like no other and what a venue! About time wembley had its expensive foundations tested!
Musical Genius's!
Higgsy, Derby, UK
I'm sorry, but were you at the same gig as me? Or were you just sat in a press section with a cocktail?? This was the 6th time I've seen them live and certainly one of the best I've been witness to. The tour has been called 'Sick of the studio', not a new world tour. This pretty much tells us it's going to be a greatest hits show. I'm more than happy to hear Orion and even ...And justice for all, which hasn't been played on tour for 18 years! 5 stars for me.
danny campbell, swindon,
Were was this guy? Standing outside the stadium? This show was amazing! I think it depends on what your musical tastes are to whether you can make an unbiased opinion but i don't think 3 stars is fair rating.
Brett Weldon, Durham, Durham
this show was gr8 it is defoo 5 stars. the sound n size of the venue was incredble ,and has been one of the best nights of my life. There is somthing about metallica live which u just cant place which i hav seen on bowth times i hav seen them.
rock on people and thanx metallica
Isaac, sheffield,
Definitely not a pathetic 3 stars - it was a 5-star for me! I have a couple of points re: your review: ⢠Creeping Death is a biblical tale - not something they made up about 'systematic killing' as you implied; ⢠they are not a Californian quartet - Lars, as the name suggests, is Danish! ⢠You say "little in the way of innovation or invention" - if they had played songs from St Anger, you would have said the same. They actually played songs there that are rarely played - a real treat for veteran fans! (Orion - an instrumental piece - is one of the most inventive metal songs ever recorded, and was touted as a definite risk for Metallica at the time it was released) Metallica are the tightest, most energetic, brilliant band onstage, and they didn't fail to amaze. Although I like St Anger, it wasn't missed in the stunning setlist they went through. They play longer sets than any band I've ever seen, and put out 150% for their fans. Well worth the 500-mile round trip, in my opinion.
Leanne Johnson, Darlington, Co. Durham
I would like to know if the reviewer actually knew who Metallica were before he went to see the concert!. I think that 99% of the fans, yes I said FANS at the concert would strongly disagree at your un-educated 3 stars rating. Also being that hardly an empty seat could be seen in the 90,000 capacity stadium, I think there were a little more than your stated 65,000. I myself and what seemed like everyone else had a fantastic night, filled with exceptional tunes from an exceptional band. Not only was the crowd well up for it, but also was theband, even James at one point seemed overwhelmed at the reception that Metallica were getting. Next time if I were you I would go and review somthing like Spice Girls when they go on tour!
Anita, Wednesbury, West Midlands
I give it 5 stars. The track Memory Remains a highlight. Still Buzzing from it. Wembley Rocked.
Treacle, Brighton,
This gig was absolutely phenomenal!! I've seen Metallica a few times and many bands besides but this ranks way up there with the best of them.
My first time to Wembley and what a venue!!
The crowd were well up for it and so were Metallica.
Looking forward to the new release and tour.
Bill Morris, birmingham, England
metallica still rocked the stadium and played a great set, performances of songs like 'puppets' and one were electric.
josh doc, weymouth, uk
I also disagree with the star rating, as this was the single best show I have ever been to. It made travelling 400 miles well worth the journey.
The best show at Wembley so far and probably the best until they return next year.
Agreed, when someone reviews a gig, they should actually know what the hell they are talking about.
Rachel, Hull,
They should have played more from St. Anger!
Chris Shannon, STREATLEY, UK
I was at this gig, I doubt there was a single fan who afterwards wouldn't have given it five stars. I don't get the comment about the lack of 'innovation or invention'; what exactly were they supposed to do to satisfy the reviewer? I for one was ecstatic about the setlist, with one classic after another. I suppose it comes down to personal taste, if you like the band then you'll struggle to find a better two and a half hours of entertainment than this. Credit to all the other fans as well, everybody gave it their all.
Dave, Manchester,
The Sound was terrible, what's with the coming on to taped intros for songs? Why the constant breaks in the set? And for the benifit of Dave Sinclair, "Creeping Death" is the tale of the isralites escape from Egypt. And not only did they ignore St Anger they only played two post "black" album tracks.
Mark, Cardiff,
Die by My Hand (?) the song title is Creeping Death. They closed with Seek & Destroy and Whiplash. Who is this guy?Was he even at the gig?
Sergio, Chelmsford, Essex
I Disagree with your star rating - this Gig was the best Wembley will see for a long time - Brilliant venue - even better performance!!!
65000 metal heads left very tired and very happy after seeing there "friends".
Metallica still Rule!!!
Will, wilmslow, cheshire
