The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday

It is 30 years since Marc Bolan died and 60 years since he was born, a double-anniversary whammy that cheerleaders of the 1970s glam-rock icon have marked with unusually concerted vigour. In addition to the screening of a TV documentary and the release of a new, double-CD compilation, Marc Bolan: T. Rex Greatest Hits, friends and fans of the musician staged a gala concert over the weekend, celebrating his musical legacy.
The show was built around an efficient performance by T. Rextasy, the tribute band led by Danielz, a singer, guitarist and Bolan lookalike who has dedicated his life to servicing the memory of the man he calls “the greatest rock star of the 20th century”. While you might take issue with his analysis, you could hardly doubt Danielz’s commitment to the cause of his idol. With his corkscrew hair, elfin features and tight, candy-pink trousers, he looked and sounded uncannily like Bolan as the band embarked on an opening sequence of T. Rex’s less universally remembered hits, including The Groover, Celebrate Summer and New York City.
A succession of “star” guests and wellwishers were wheeled on, all genuine admirers of Bolan, no doubt, but many of them plainly unused to the glare of the mainstream spotlight. The well-meaning bluster of Eric Hall, the compere, set a distinctly end-of-the-pier tone to the proceedings, an impression reinforced by the onstage announcement of the winner of a raffle to secure the prize of a Gibson guitar; Ray Dorset of Mungo Jerry sang I Love To Boogie, while peering at the lyrics on a crumpled piece of paper held in his hand; and a former member of John’s Children (Bolan’s group before T. Rex) inadvisedly took off his T-shirt and clambered shakily on to the PA speakers as he laid into a version of Desdemona that did anything but fly.
Other contributors, including Dr Robert from the Blow Monkeys, Clem Burke from Blondie, Shaking Stevens and Howie Casey, the saxophonist who played on many of the original T. Rex hits, gave a more polished account of themselves, but contributed little to the wow factor. The producer and occasional bass player, Tony Visconti who conducted a female string section going by the ingenious name of Dirty Pretty Strings, unveiled a superb arrangement of Cosmic Dancer that had lain in his bottom drawer for 35 years.
But it fell to Marc Almond to provide the evening’s only genuine touch of star quality. He revealed that he had been prompted to change the spelling of his own name thanks to his adolescent fascination for Bolan, and performed epic versions of Teenage Dream and Dandy in the Underworld before overseeing the show’s piece de resistance.
Joined onstage by the singer and songwriter Gloria Jones – who is the mother of Bolan’s son Rolan, and was the woman behind the wheel of the car in which Bolan died – Almond sang a duet of his biggest hit, Tainted Love, which was written by Jones. As she and Almond traded lines from the bittersweet lyric, their faces inches apart, the standard of the performance was rather beside the point at a moment laden with such emotional and historical resonance.

Hello I am Lissy a great Bolan Fan .special for this event I came to London. It was a wonderful evening and when Gloria said that the spirit of Marc is here, I had tears in my eyes!

Seems to always be a doubt as Ed Cobb co-wrote most of his hits often with the artist concerned. Read an article once where Cobb said that he remembered coming up with the idea for Tainted Love but he and Gloria finished it together. Who knows the truth? You pays your money and takes your choice - I still love her version the best. As for Marc he was and is the greatest musical legend ever!!!
Paul Fay, Cyprus,
I attended the concert and in my opinion as a true Marc Bolan fan we could have not wished for anymore from this 30th Anniversary tribute.
The list of stars that attended are to many to mention but special notice should be made of Tony Visconti who must have planned and put so much into the concert along with brilliant performances from Andy Ellison, Marc Almond who almost stole the show and Linda Lewis.
Some special Bolonic moments for me was Cosmic Dancer with T Rextasy and the Dirty Pretty Strings conducted by Tony VIsconti who produced the score for the song this moment was pure magic.
T Rextasy did what you would expect from them on such a big night they are as close as you could get to T Rex and the fans who travelled from the USA, Japan and Europe all must have agreed it was a fantastic performance.
For any T Rex fan it was a night to remember and one - I will never forget

What's Gloria Jones song got to do with celebrating Marc Bolan's life. It should of been all about Marc not Gloria, she is hungry for the attention again.
It's great to hear about the other proformers who sang the T.Rex songs and thank you for telling us that went on because sadly not all Bolan fans could make it.

i was at the gig and have to say it was mind blowing, i would never have missed this for all the world. marc almond stole the show he was ace, t-rextasy were brill as all the other stars. and i have to disagree with the writer david sinclair. you must have been half asleep or maybe not a bolan fan if you didnt enjoy this once in a life time concert to one of the greatest muscians of all time. you are the only one who has gave a negative report on this event. i am a member of the fan club and on another club and everyone has raved about this show.lets not forget yes this was a memorial concert to marc bolan but it was also a charity event for the performing rights society and the nordoff robins charity.
irene morses, glasgow,
I thought the evening was about the best tribute that could have been wished for by any true Marc Bolan fan.
T Rextasy did everything you would expect from a profesional rock band with a true love for the music of Marc Bolan.
To see T Rextasy with Tony Visconti conducting the Dirty Pretty Strings was a sight to behold for any Bolan fan I watched the show and at the point when Cosmic Dancer was being performed I thought this was pure Bolan perfection and I along with countless other fans including some from the USA this moment was very special and one that I wont forget ever.
As the review stated Marc Almond was a bright star on the stage but a mention to the fantastic voice of Linda Lewis would not go a-miss her vocals on Children of the Revolution were so powerful and suited the song to perfection.
There were lots of highlights for a true Bolan fan but just being there to witness the evening on such a special night for Marc and his family was ftruly amazing

after an excellent performance from t-rextasy, marc almond ,shakin stevens and linda lewis the rest left a lot to be desired, a bit of a shambles for something that should have been a celebration of a great mans life. we went to the rectory pub on the following day before going to the crematorium for the service of marc bolan, there was no t-rex music playing although this was meant to be an organized place to meet, good job the fans give the place a bit of emotional atmosphere. the weekend could and should have been a height of emotional pleasure as we celebrated the life of the main man, who loved to boogie, and gave us such joy.am left slightly disapointed...............the tree was mint.. well done to those who tend to marc bolans shrine.....dreamy lady

I don't see anyone claiming that Gloria wroteTainted Love.

Decent review. I agree with most of it but no metion of Shakin' Stevens. I'm no Shaky fan but his performance of Chrome Sitar with the backing singer was faultless. Yes Almond stole the show, I'm not afan of his either but he made Teenage Dream his own. T.Rextasy were slightly below par, a shame but they can do better. Maybe the occasion got the better of them? Wonderful to see Gloria Jones on satge, just a pity her son Rolan Bolan couldn't make it due to passport trouble.

The gig was fantastic. T.Rextasy are a wonderful tribute band and the perfect "house band" to the guests appearing at the show. Dr Robert was excellent. His version of "Sitting Here" was stunning. Marc Almond was fabulous, and did one of my fave Bolan songs, "Dandy In The Underworld". Clem Burke played some stomping drums, and Visconti looked fab conducting the "Dirty Pretty Strings" quartet. It was good to hear Howie Casey, who was the sax player on the original "20th Century Boy" single, amongst otheres. Andy Ellison from John's Children (Marc Bolan's first band) was his usual crazy self, and added an element of fun to the evening. My fave performer of the night was Linda Lewis, whose voice is bewitching. Her version of "Children of the Revolution" just blew me away. It was touching to see Gloria Jones come on stage and thank everyone for being there. Top marks to whoever got her to perform "Tainted Love" with Marc Almond. Gloria first covered the song in the mid 1960's.
