Up the red carpet outside the Lyceum Theatre, where Duran Duran last played 25 years ago, came the famous and fashionable – Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, the designers Philip Treacy and Julien Macdonald and, bizarrely, Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone, from Formula One motor racing. Inside, Bob Geldof hid behind his hair.
That Duran Duran can still cause a stir by simply playing a show has more to do with the current credibility of comebacks than the fact that, last month, they released Red Carpet Massacre, a new album part-produced by Timbaland. Yet the album has presented the four remaining members of the original lineup with an opportunity to extend the revival they launched in 2003 – last month they played a nine-night stand off Broadway and the London show was filmed for broadcast by VH1.
Red Carpet Massacre has been mutedly received by both critics and fans; backing every track with bassy techno beats was bold, but the results are largely bland. Sadly, that didn’t stop Duran Duran playing the album in its entirety.
Clad in black suit jackets and jeans – the former emblazoned with a silver D in the case of singer Simon Le Bon and so tight on his barrel chest that the buttons began to pop off – aided by glossy visuals on different-sized screens and accompanied by a backing singer in a PVC minidress, they struggled to muster a memorable tune from a barrage of beats.
There were exceptions. The title track had a hummable chorus, albeit one with appalling lyrics (but then Le Bon’s always were), the single Falling Down was slick synthetic pop and Skindivers had lovely, eerie atmospherics, but was spoilt by having to be played twice for filming purposes. At least half, however, was simply dreadful.
After an interval, the four returned in satin jackets for a ludicrous electro set that was a homage to Kraftwerk – they stood in a line behind keyboards on stands and covered the German pioneers’ Showroom Dummies and the Normal’s synth oddity Warm Leatherette, delivered robotic rap-style by Le Bon, while the audience stifled their sniggers.
More than two hours in, Duran Duran finally delivered a run of classic tracks and the Lyceum erupted. Rio, Notorious, Planet Earth and Girls on Film had been only modestly updated, but sounded surprisingly fresh. In a rhinestone-studded shirt, Le Bon finally relaxed. Full marks for trying to move on, but looking back was far better.

Was lucky enough to see them play live a couple of weeks before this gig in the only other country they've played RCM live so far, other than the States and Britain off course: Argentina: They only played four songs from RCM -RCM, Nite Runners, Falling down and Skin divers-but the show was fantastic all the same, they were in really great form. Must admit, however, that I think Astronaut was, generally speaking, a better album. Andy is sorely missed

i agree . the show was just amazing and the critics will always want to shoot them down foe either being too edgy or for being too safe. I think the new stuff its just superb and really underrated just like duran always was by this lowlife critics.
long live duran!
best show i have seen in years .

"Sadly, that didnât stop Duran Duran playing the album in its entirety."... hello..the clue's in the title "Duran Duran present..Red Carpet Massacre".. that was the point of the f*****g show.. I'm sure you people make up your minds what you're going to write before you go to the gig.
It was amazing, we had a ball along with everyone around us. The new album is just superb..funky ,uplifting ,amazingly atmospheric tunes & some of the best Duran Lyrics ever..
If all Duran had done was churn out the old hits ,you would have slagged them off for that too, they can't win ..next time send someone with an open mind..
ali, london,
Like many others I've seen Duran numerous times over the years and I have to say this show goes into my top 2 or 3 gigs ever. I went specifically to hear the new album as I've heard the other stuff so many times. My opinion is that it was excellent on it's own and the electronic set etc were added bonuses. They don't get enough credit for their live performances and there's definetly a lot of lazy journalism that surrounds the band (particulalry Le Bon). Can't wait to see Dirty Great Monster on VH1, it was spectacular.

What's this now? A British journalist writing a snide and unnecessarily harsh review of a Duran Duran project? And they say there are no surprises left in this jaded old world.
Yes, I'm a fan. Since 1981 to be exact. I'm not a screaming girl. And to my knowledge, never have been. I saw the show in NYC and loved it. The new album is strong and filled with hooks. The electro set was a fun nod to their roots. And the "classic" stuff did indeed sound fresh. It's funny though, that the old songs (those same tunes that were all universally trashed by critics when they were originally released) are now looked upon so fondly.
I guess nostalgia, like time, heals all wounds. But personally, I'll take the new stuff. Because if you don't have that, you'll never have anything to be nostalgic about.
Anthony DeVito, New York City, NY
Are you sure you shouldn't have been there reviewing the Lion King, luv? The show that I saw was spectacular in every way. Yes, I am a "Duranie", and yes, I have seen them several times in several venues, and I have to say that I thought the mix of the new with the classics was perfect. There were NO empty seats (trust me, we know the hard way) and everyone around us was enjoying the show. There was no stifling of sniggers, maybe that was just when you thought you would try and join in!?! Just my opinion, we're all entitled.......
I wil continue to support the band, just as anybody who enjoys their music will do. If you don't like it, thanks for coming, mind the door doesn't hit you on the way out......

Talk about missing the point, the poor reviews (the Telegraph and Evening Standard were similarly negative) all revolve around the reviewers expecting a night of 80âs nostalgia, rather than a repeat of the âlistening partyâ format performed at the Barrymore Theatre on Broadway. Anyone I spoke to knew exactly what they were letting themselves in for and were very much looking forward to hearing the new album.
We thought it was one of the best Duran concerts ever and from what I could see, the rest of the audience were absolutely loving it. Being a small venue was a real treat and although we were near the back of the stalls, the view was excellent, as was the atmosphere.
Duran have sold over 85 million records, have the clout to sell out arenas and have just performed on top TV programmes Jonathan Ross and the X-Factor. As one of Britainâs most enduring musical exports, not to mention being one of the handful of UK bands to crack America, they really do deserve more respect, particularly from journalists who seemingly canât be bothered to read the brief on the show format.
In particular, the Telegraph reviewer seemed more interested in the drink sales at the bar and wrongly stated that it was Nite Runner they performed twice. None of them mentioned Simon messing up the lyric second time round though. Does make you wonder if they actually attend the concertâ¦.
Kevin, London,
I was right there at the front and danced till my feet ached and I never seen any popping buttons. Sometimes journalist are fantasists and like to spice up there stories. I love the new album and so did every 80's swinging chick (and chap) that was singing their hearts out round about me. I think it is great that hey haven't been afraid to move with the times and up date their sound. Not only that they were more than happy to great their fans outside, it's Wednesday night now and I am still on a complete high. Rock on Duran Duran!! See you next year x
Gail MacKinnon, Inverness,
Sniggering? You wouldn`t have been able to hear that over the fans screaming for more, were you standing outside by any chance? The whole point of this show was to provide fans with a unique chance to hear the album in full and it was a real treat. It`s refreshing that a band has the balls to do something different with their live shows and doesnt resort to playing the same tired old tunes over and over again. We were treated to tracks that hadn`t been played live in a very long time and the response was rapturous. Last Chance on the Stairway / Skin Trade / Do you believe in Shame brought the house down. Of course the classics will get a huge reaction but the audience was on their feet from the start. This band has sold over 85million records, does this mean that for their success they have to be slated at every opportunity, at least they played it all live. Good on you boys.
See you on tour next year.
Bob Roberts, London , UK
I find it amazing to think that people paid £100 and didn't really know what the concert was going to be about..
I have seen the band many times and I can say this gig was absolutely amazing, they were on top form!
Agree with all the othe comments, Duran put on a great show and the purpose of the one off gig was to present RCM not to play the usual hits, all of you critics only want an excuse to slag them off
Elena, London,
Great Band live!
every track of Red Carpet Massacre is amazing!
The electro set great!!
i hope that Duran will play always the new Tracks when you will performin Italy too.. i
love them
vale, florence, italy
the whole concert was brilliant it was not just a concert it was also an event to promote red carpet masacre. i have seen duran duran many times at many different venues and it was one of the best concerts yet. And it is not just my view. The venue was full of hard core duran duran fans who knew the words to the new songs. The atmostphere was great fans singing and dancing. On leaving the venue the reactions from the fans was the best yet and we feel honoured to be part of it.
Keep up the good work duran duran and see you on tour next year

Duran Duran is one of the most banal bands of the 1980's. They are very commercial and rife with vainglory. The greatest 1980's band and still going strong are "The Church". The latter will appeal to anybody that likes vintage Pink Floyd, The Byrds and Radiohead.
Brien Comerford, Glenview, United States
From time to time I dip into a live Duran gig - last night's was glorious! I paid well over the odds for the ticket but it was worth it. Jasmin Le Bon danced a few feet away, it was family all the way. This morning I relistened to the CD - suddenly I got it, it wasn't reinventing the wheel - you don't have to do that - you just make it stronger, faster and better - I wouldn't want it any other way.

Perhaps you were not aware of what last nights one off gig in the West End and the two week run on Broadway was all about?
It was specifically to present their new album 'Red Carpet Massacre' and this was known well before tickets even went on sale. The album itself is great, but I loved the live version, and was actually really chuffed that we got another chance to listen to 'Skin Divers'.
I stood with amazement at how they created the stage atmosphere for 'Dirty Great Monster'. The lyrics to this song are so strong and I thought the way it was presented was very effective.
Roll on the next tour and lets keep hearing lots of the new stuff, if people want an 80's themed night then I am afraid that Duran Duran cover 3 decades worth. It is great to hear tracks that have not been played a lot previously.
Alison Troke, Birmingham, England
Lordy, amazing how one's opinions of a show can vary. I guess the majority of the audience were, like me, die hard Duran fans who knew exactly what we were letting ourselves in for - a different type of show from the bog standard hits and glitz packages offered by every other band that has been around for more than a few years. RCM is a cracking collection of songs and if you can't recognise Skin Divers and Nite Runner as their funkiest work outs since the late 80s, then shame on you. The electro set was wonderful - slightly bizarre, original, unexpected, different, and there wasn't a fan whose heart didn't melt as they did Last Chance on the Stairway. No one sniggered near me - probably the only sniggering that was going on was by the journalists, looking for yet another reason not to like the band.
Lebon's lyrics appalling - tsk, another dull hack cliche, up there with asking Spandau Ballet where they got their name from. I'm sure in time you'll get to do that, too..
