The Pipes of Peace or Live and Let Die? It must have been a tough choice for Paul McCartney, considering the message of brotherly love that he hoped to disseminate with his first concert in Israel, a country under constant attack from militants of all stripes that prides itself on offing its foes with Bond-like ruthlessness.
Luckily for the crowd in Tel Aviv, McCartney put a bullet through the head of the insipid little peace ditty and opted for the James Bond setpiece that turned around what had been, up until then, a rather uninspired start.
It lit up the stage in a volcanic eruption of fireworks that must have been visible in the hills of the West Bank, where the Palestinian leadership were sulking about being snubbed by the ex-Beatle.
For a man six years older than the country in which he was playing, Macca gave an energetic performance, once he found his stride. The start of the show was not promising, with a few blander Beatles pop numbers like Hello Goodbye interspersed with some maudlin, instantly forgettable songs from the Wings years. Like Israel, McCartney bears a particularly heavy burden of the past, and he must have noticed how the crowd seized up for many of his solo efforts, only to come alive again once he steered back to favourites penned with John Lennon.
The high point of the first half was a tribute to his old writing partner, Give Peace a Chance, which struck a chord with the war-calloused crowd. After the last notes died away, one middle-aged man with a child on his shoulders and a heavy Israeli accent kept shouting, “Give peace a chance, give peace a chance,” as though he was channeling the trampled ghost of the Oslo Accords.
The problem with a Paul McCartney concert is that the Beatles songs are so familiar that they tend to resemble a karaoke session at an old people’s home, while the Wings numbers have a hazy, half-forgotten quality, with the uncanny ability to dredge up memories of grey Sundays on damp Welsh holidays in the 1970s — even on a warm Tel Aviv night.
Even worse was his foray into his very latest oeuvre. When he began last year’s mandolin-inspired Dance Tonight with a sprightly little jig, he looked up and noticed that he was the only person in Hayarkon Park actually moving, as though 40,000 people had suddenly, spontaneously, decided to play a round of grandmother’s footsteps.
It was only after Live and Let Die that McCartney seemed to find his stride, whipping up the crowd with rocking performances of Back in the USSR’ (with an amusing background video of May Day parades and dancing Cossacks, which must have brought back happy memories to members of the million-strong Russian community) before letting rip with Hey Jude and Get Back, when he finally got the reaction that he’d been looking for all evening: pure joy.
When the Beatles craze was sweeping the world four decades ago, Israel rather prudishly declined to allow the Fab Four to play. That decision made Israel wait 43 years before a Beatle would play here. Judging by the imploring crowd, it was worth the wait.

It boggles the mind, but no doubt it was quite an event. Does ever survey of one sort or another estimate/disclose what 'impact upon audience' a given song has?
Michael Haydn, Vineyard Haven, MA, USA
Those who attended the concert lived through the making of history. 10 meters from the stage, I looked at the pure joy on the faces of the hundreds of people around me. I've never seen anything like it. For 2.5 hours, we were privileged to watch the REAL McCartney. The was nothing to criticize!
Stuart, Herzelia, Israel
I was there thursday night! And it was an lovely, exiting evening!
The best concert I have been in ,in my whole live!
There was an atmosphere of pure exitement and magic in the air and of friendship, peace and love,!!
Thank you Paul Mc Cartney for coming to our country!!
johanna achimeir, Jerusalem, Israel
McCartney's Wings and solo material is some of the best music ever and he should be performing much more of it!
Joe, Selma, U.S.
Sir:Paul's concert here was absolutely great. It is a pity that fringe elements have to bring their anti-Israel hatred into everything.
Sir Paul sang here for peace. Could anyone imagine a crowd of 50,000 in Tehran or Baghdad letting him get away with calling for peace with Israel. Not a chance.
Ralph Phillips, Rishon Le Zion, Israel
"The start of the show was not promising, with a few blander Beatles pop numbers like You say hello"
If you're going to have a go at him then at least get the name of the song right, it did get to number 1 after all.
Chris, Kingston, England
Why do we have to go into politics ? The guy came here to do what he knows best and that is play music. Having seen many concerts here, this was surely one of the best and i think that most people would really like to see him again.
Good on yer Paul !
RONNIE MARKUS, hOD HASHARON, ISRAEL
The start of the show was not promising, with a few blander Beatles pop numbers like " 'You say hello' ": I see he really did his research..what Album was that on? At least get the names of the songs right. Its the music that unites and that has NO policial boundries: Hear the music, hear the message
PatrickW, NYC, USA
"You say hello" What Beatles song, bland or not, would that be?
Mike, Buenos Aires, Argentina
"The start of the show was not promising, with a few blander Beatles pop numbers like You say hello interspersed with some maudlin, instantly forgettable songs from the Wings years."
As a reviewer, James Hider should at least be familiar the titles of the songs that McCartney performed...
Blain, Port Talbot, Wales
Thanks a lot Paul!
I have been there yestarday and it was amazing. We all pray that we will live in peace with our neighbours and we are asking them in the last 60 years to give peace a chance. We want peace and we are willing to give up a lot for it!
Israel, Tel Aviv, Israel
If you are going to write a mediocre review on what everyone else thought as a magic night may i suggest that you get the name of the song correct. The first song on the set list is 'Hello Goodbye' not 'you say Hello'.
June, Wolverhampton, UK
George - it was in Tel Aviv rather than Jerusalem purely because at 70 quid a ticket noone here would be able to afford to go - Jerusalem's the poorest city in Israel and if he didn't manage to sell out in TA then he certainly wouldn't have here. It has nothing to do with politics!!!!
Lucy, jerusalem, israel
"The start of the show was not promising, with a few blander Beatles pop numbers like You say hello"
I think this kind of sums up the article, I saw Macca in the summer in Liverpool... there was nothing bland about it... I'll take your article seriously when you get song titles right.
Chris, Wigan,
Is it a music article or a political one? What's politics got to do with it? If the show was in the states, would you metion the "Give peace a chance" song in relation of the Iraque war?
Aviv, tel-aviv,
If alive John Lennon would never have played in Israel, he stood for peace. McCartney chose to play to a certain audience and being icon for westerners has only encouraged more to align their views/beliefs with Israel. He has made clear where he stands. He is no friend of muslims or peace.
i Hussain, London, UK
A shame on Hider! the concert was fabulous! Yes, there were a few songs that were less popular, but Paul had a great stage presence and all eyes were on him all the time. The production side was flawless, the crowd great and the music rocking. Do critics have to say bad things all the time??
Dave, Urim, Israel
The "blander Beatles pop number" you reference is actually called "Hello, Goodbye".
chris, sheffield,
thank you for coming.
Omer, Tel Aviv, Israel
We went to the concert last night - and the crowd rocked and loved Sir Paul. Full Stop.
Jonathan , Neve Daniel, Israel
i did not like Your Pro Isreali attitude the Main reason they are always under attack is that they Keep stealing More land from the palstinians they were Given the Land of Isreal and they are always looking to Annex more .AND for your information i am not anti Isreali Just anti Greed
Anthony Bowers, Portsmouth, Hants
I was there yesterday. It was a great performance and wonderful atmosphere, joy all around from start to finish with blissful moments. It was about music and hearty gathering. Thank you Paul Mccartney.
Yael, Ramat-Gan, Israel
George Hamstead, I am absolutely sure that Israel would be out of all of those places in a flash if the many Arab and muslim states which are committed to the total destruction of Israel made an irrevocable peace with Israel. I am absolutely sure of it. So don't be so one sided.
Gerard, London, UK
Macca came to play to a modern, western, music-loving crowd - I was there on a steamy Tel Aviv night and it was awesome!!!
David, London, UK
"The fact that the concert was in Tel Aviv instead of Jerusalem signifies something." Not what you think it does. It's most likely that J'salem residents aren't really into massive pop concerts, whereas Tel Avivians are and also have the space and facilities for it.
Lisa, London,
I was there and it was unforgettable. The huge crowd had respect for the new songs which Macca performed, and in almost 2.5 hours he covered all the Beatles and post-Beatles songs well. Politics are for the foreign press - we Israelis were there for the great music and the memories!
Shalom Lev, Ganei Tikva, Israel
Tel Aviv. Jerusalem. Like I can't get a good knish in New Jersey? Come on, already, stop with the politics in your tiny brains and let them expand a little with the music. One day this man will be famous! He will write terrific music. I'll show him the best knish he ever tastes, if he likes to eat.
Rob, Passaic, New jersey
Journalistic swipes his solo output compared to his Beatle period is as predictable and dated as the very point they seem to be trying to make. It's unrealistic to expect him to not perform his latest music. Surely the fact that McCartney at 66 is still making world headlines is the real triumph.
hart, London, UK
Mccartney is amazing!!
Not all Muslims are terrorists. But there's no such thing as palestine or palastenians the country was named palastine after Rome did it to (named after the jew's old enemy the Philistines) as a punishment. Philistines & Palestinians are two completely diff people..wake up
carrey, Chicago, United States
Uh... hearing Paul performing John's "Give Peace a Chance" rang about as true as an imaginary (but now fading) John covering "Yesterday".
Or John doing "Eleanor Rigby" or even "Hey Jude".
Never would have happened.
Never. Not Ever.
Richard Whittington, Santa Barbara, California
Wow?! There is nothing "karaoke" about Paul McCartney singing a Beatles song. I've been to a recent McCartney concert and you are floating on air when you hear your favorite Beatles' song being performed by one of only two surviving Beatles. His voice has still got it!
Nancy, Canada,
I'm without a doubt that Sir Paul gave it his best as he always does. If the people don't get into it well, it's not always the performers fault. The show in Quebec city (Canada) two months ago was a blast.( 250,000 pers.) Best show I've ever seen and will ever see!!! Come back again Paul !!!!!!!
Sandra, Quebec city, Canada
Paul McCartney RULES!!! and John Lennon LIVES FOREVER!!!
Armand, Anderson, USA
The fact that the concert was in Tel Aviv instead of Jerusalem signifies something.
Maybe that the Israelis should get out of the lands they are illegally occupying.........east Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, the West Bank, the Sheeba farms.
George Hamstead, Stroud, England
Wait, so, the islamic extremist warned MCCARTNEY to stay away from Israel? A death threat? Really? You have got to be joking. What, you just had to throw that in there. I mean, it wouldn't make sense otherwise. It's quite ironic that he played the 'Peace' concert in Israel :)
Kae, Dubai,
The invariable problem with a Paul McCartney concert is his choice of songs. In Israel all the songs should have been Beatles' classics. "Live And Let Die" was a wise, upbeat solo song choice. MACCA still remains music's most iconic optimist, humanitarian and vegetarian. Viva Paul !
Brien Comerford, Glenview, Illinois, United States
I am certain that the concert cheered up a lot of people. Maybe you are not aware James that concerts tend to leave their best until the last. A little like your miserable review (just about) it got better at the end.
Jake, Bangkok,
"Islamic extremist Omar Bakri warned the star to keep away from Israel "if he values his life" - but Macca refused to give in to the threats.
------------------------------------------------
Well snubbed Macca ! We British do not kneel before threatening bullies like Bakri.
Trevor, Ipswich, UK
