Shawshank redemption, Scarface, Carlitos way, The Untouchables, God Father Part II, Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket - just a few of the great movies that for whatever bizarre reason have not made the stop 100?
Mark, Walsall, West Midlands
forest gump should be in the top 10 an absolute tom hanks masterpiece of laughter and sadness and brilliantly acted by all involved.
brian heath, lytham st annes, uk
how can you miss out american pshyco.this is one of the greatest films ever. and how can anyone miss scarface off the list. but point break is a brillant film.and you missed the abyss. P.S. ET! I HATE ET
steve hall, bridgwater, england
How can you forget the number 1 box office hit of all time! TITANIC. Frankly I think it is stupid that it is not in the top 10 let alone recognised at all in the top 100!
Cheyenne Falzon, Saffron Walden, England
Having a top (insert number here) list of films is always a fun way of showing other people what you rate above all others, but it does need to be credible.
One can only laugh at point break being in the list as much as being confused over the sublime Shawshank being the obvious absentee.
I Roberts, Chorley, Lancs, England
It seems to me that I see the point of lists such as this one, differently. Sure, I am dissapointed by the lack of The Third Man, 12 Angry Men, American Beauty etc. but I think that the point of these lists, especially as this one set out to be provocative, is to introduce movies to people.
Relax
Terri Cameron, Aberdeen,
I never thought I would see a list more stupid than the one put out by the American Film Institute in 1997, but this one is even worse. Do I have to mention the films that aren't here? How about the fact that not one silent film made the list? No "Sunrise," no "City Lights," no "The General."
Tom Moran, New York City, USA
Lists like these are bound to disappoint.
As others have said, "Citizen Kane" belongs somewhere on the list... even if not #1... and I also think "The Lion in Winter" does as well. I'd also rank the original Gene Wilder/Zero Mostel version of "The Producers" as one of the great film comedies.
Malacandra, Santa Rosa, CA, USA
This list should be retitled "All the movies we [the list-makers] have ever seen".
You people definitely have a prejudice against quality.
Jill, Camden, UK
"The Towering Inferno" and "My Fair Lady" shouldn't be here, and while it has its moments, neither should "The Shining." Which "The Jungle Book"? Silents are sadly misrepresented; "The General" and "The Gold Rush" should be here. And what about the greatest animated film ever made: "Pinocchio"?
Mark Hasskarl, Danbury, CT, USA
The only interesting bit of Lost in Translation is the opening shot of Scarlett Johanssons bottom, and There Will Be Blood is no way a classic. My Left Foot is a better Day-Lewis film. Shawshank, Usual Suspects, Memento, Sixth Sense, and why does Airplane! never make these lists?
D. Keen, Yeovil, UK
Amores Perros, Apres les Obos, Rain Man, Elephant Man, Once Upon A Time In America.......I honestly could go on & on but to include Point Break & The Breakfast Club in the top 100 is having a laugh.
Paul Rennie, Grangemouth, Scotland
Fitzcaraldo, Fitzcaraldo.
joe brow, mao mao, sau
Where is Sergio Leone????
Efthymios Vassilopoulos, Athens, Greece
Shawshank Redemption? Not in the list. Point break is? - This list is embarrassing.
Ells, Guildford,
Really cant agree with this list - some great movies are missing from here - Trainspotting and The Full Monty to name but 2 of the better comedies.
AL, Cape Town, RSA
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World... Stop I want to get off! the most zany of the inzane who ever kicked the bucket under a big W. I was surprised that Jerry Lewis only got 6 seconds in the whole movie.
Jim, Indianapolis, USA
Amelie Poulain, Good Bye Lenin, L'aventure c'est l'aventure, Wings of Desire, The Tin Drum and Oligarch probably deserve to be in your list...
Nicolas, London,
What about the epitome of all screwball comedies- "Bringing up Baby?" The fast paced dialogue and insight into the "lifestyles of the rich and silly" is terrific! A soothing balm for Depression era citizens who needed at good laugh at the expense of the gilded class. "My Man Godfrey"-ditto
Carol Ann, Clearwater, Fl., U.S.A.
Is this list for real? You ranked the Breakfast Club at number 22. That movie is mediocre at best. It is tiresome to see Citizen Kane at number one, but it certainly deserves to be in the top 100. The Towering Inferno? Seriously? I thought the AFI list was terrible, but this one is far worse.
Bryan Goggins, Grafton, USA
A list that doesn't have Psycho, The Third Man and Singin in the Rain but has Point Break and The Breakfast Club?
Sarah, Chicago, United States
I want to sit in a room with one of your critics and hear them argue why Point Break is better than Citizen Kane. You are being provocative for the sake of being provocative. Dropping Kane is like dropping Shakespeare from a list of the 100 greatest writers. It only makes the list ridiculous.
John, New York,
About half is well-deserved, the other half makes no sense whatsoever.
The Top 10 should be:
1. Lost in Translation
2. Taxi Driver
3. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
4. Bande a Part
5. Fargo
6. Roman Holiday
7. Repulsion
8. Mean Streets
9. Mouchette
10. Shadows (Cassavetes)
Chris, Herpen, The Netherlands
Point Break is in the top 100!? Where is Godfather 2? There will be blood is the best movie in the last 5 years--maybe even the last 10--but second best EVER?! Choices like that make this whole list ridiculous, even though most of the movies on the list are great. They just are not all the best.
Adam, Orlando, USA
Towering Inferno? The Breakfast Club?...these are better than All About Eve or Raging Bull? Is this list a joke? I hope no one takes this list seriously.
Ann, Ridgefield, NJ
Ann Dexter, Ridgefield, USA
"The Towering Inferno"? Really? I mean...really?
Mervyn de Goeas, Petit Valley, Trinidad & Tobago
Point Break? Really? REALLY?
There Will Be Blood is easily the second most overrated movie of the past 5 years (Juno comes in first).
Any list that puts Pulp Fiction at 59 while putting The Towering Inferno at 21 is clearly out to cause controversy and is not a list that should be taken seriously.
Joe, Atlanta,
As problematic top three choices of this list are, I don't think there's any other single inclusion that calls the validly of this list into serious question as that of Point Break.
Seriously, is that a joke?
Burton, Durham, United States
What!?! No Fight Club?
Gwen, Casablanca, Morocco
Welles himself believed CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT was the film that would justify him to St. Peter. Certainly it's better than ALIEN and TOWERING INFERNO. Too bad that both the Soviet WAR AND PEACE and the astonishing HEIMAT cycle are missing, not to mention THE APARTMENT and any Capra. Big holes.
Jeffrey Sweet, NYC, US
Am I going blind, or is there no Citizen Kane anywhere on this list?
Stephen, Glasgow,
Perhaps the least bad list Ive ever read; though of course it has its controversies. Was Towering Inferno put on it to generate a reaction? I actually re-watched that movie last year and wow it is a bad movie.
Some obvious omissions are Unforgiven, Reservoir Dogs and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Matrix and Pulp Fiction should be much higher.
Keith, Halifax, Canada
Point Break? And The Conversation is criminally low on that list. Ridiculous.
Aaron , san antonio , USA
A top 100 films list without Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt?
Andrew, New York City,
I've noticed that many of the films on the list aren't necessarily good, such as ET, The Sound of Music, Terminator 2, and The Matrix, but they are included because of the cultural impact they had on the world.
I'm glad that there's finally a list where The Usual Suspects isn't among the top 100.
Christian, Kent,
I would have liked to see The Shawshank Redemption and Boogie Nights in the list, and maybe some dark comedies like Snatch and Fight Club.
A lot of big Academy Award winners have been excluded, such as Schindler's List, American Beauty, Forrest Gump, and The English Patient, and Gladiator.
Christian, Kent, England
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Star Wars
Lord of the Rings
The 39 Steps
The Dam Busters
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Legend of 1900
Brassed Off
The Incredibles (much better than Toy Story)
Scrap:
ET
Jurassic Park
Goodfellas
Wizard of Oz
anything by Kubrick (except Spartacus, maybe) or Tarantino
Michael, Liverpool,
Jungle Book? The Towering Inferno? Point Break? This list is a joke, right?
Bob Hogan, Salt Lake City, USA
this is a bad list, you have rashomon but not seven samurai. and there will blood? come on it was amazing but not that amazing. this list is just trying to be different, and forgot about some amazing films (aka better films).
Daren, Houston,
"...doth not the appetite alter? a man loves the meat in his youth that he cannot endure in his age."
All such opinion is subjective, but I feel a film should be measured by the impression it made on release, both to audiences personally and as a whole, and by how it has lasted. All good fun, tho
Brendan, Martin, Slovakia
Hello...
DAS BOOT!!
THE DEER HUNTER!!
It's not a bad top 100 and opinions vary but surely these two would both be in any knowledgable movie fan's top 10, let alone 100.
Evan, Perth, Australia
I praise you for selecting Picnic at Hanging Rock and Don't Look Now for this list! These are two very overlooked films.
But I have ask, why why why is The Towering Inferno on this list?
Dane Winchester, Harpers Mills,
at least I was pleased to see that DON'T LOOK NOW was on this very silly list----------though it gave me pause to see it placed next to such a dreary little thing, which is Annie Hall, though i confess that I've not made it through that thing; its put me to sleep three time, and all in theatres.
David johnson, chicago, usa
The list serves its purpose; to promote debate. Obvious mistakes with choices made and positions given to one film relative to another. Easy examples:
KES, the seventh best film ever made? Wrong.
The Shawshank Redemption, Star Wars and Godfather 2 omitted. Wrong.
The Shining above Raging Bull...
Enzo, Melbourne,
judging from the movies in your list I'm gonna guess you forgot the great escape, and maybe mutiny on the bounty?
andrew, sydney, australia
Where is No Country For Old Men, Oldboy, The Big Lebowski, Dawn of the Dead(1978), Platoon, Memento, Seven, The Shawshank Redemption?
Point Break, Jurassic Park, Terminator 2 better than the original Terminator?
Jason Jaws, Chicago, Illinois
While I have to say that there are many more films I appreciate on this list than in the usual cannon, there are some entries here that just make me roll my eyes at the state of film criticism and appreciation. "There Will Be Blood" at number 2?? What an embarrassment.
Cathy Potts, Rolling Hills, CA, USA
Finally. For years now, I've been touting Casablanca as number one and wondering whatever all the fuss was about Caine.
James, Monteria, Colom bia
No Country For Old Men? Pulp Fiction #59? Fargo is great...but not as great as Pulp Fiction. No American Beauty, yet The Jungle Book is #14? The Big Lebowski? Batman Begins? Fight Club? The French Connection? Leon the Professional? Girl, Interrupted? The Last King of Scotland? CMON!
Reggie, Long Beach, USA
As an American, I have always felt that the British outlook on film is far better, because they will give horror and action its proper place. But Point Break? The Towering Inferno? The Breakfast Club? There Will Be Blood at #2?? Even ET at #3 is being generous to a film that has lost its resonance.
Tom, Chicago, USA
So what if Citizen Kane did not get the coveted 89th place on this list, and Touch Of Evil did? Why apologies? Why complains?
For a film like Kane, I really do not think it was an offer that hard to refuse.
bisvas, Oslo,
There is no way that Eternal Sunshine deserves to be anywhere near the top 10 of all time. I love the movie, but not even close.
Jeff C, Boston, USA
No Star Wars, no raiders of the lost ark, no godfather part II (just to name a few), but you included the Breakfast Club?
paul, doylestown, usa
umm where is Shawshank Redemption??? how can you miss this?!!?!?
mike, mike,
It's great to see films that have been neglected in the past but where are Laurel & Hardy? Why are Keaton, Chaplin and the Marx Brothers revered above te greatest comedy teamin hisory? Have people forgotten 'the boys'? Maybe they've never seen them. Their (L&H) humor is just as funny 70 yrs later.
Dennis J., Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA
There Will Be Blood is the second greatest film of all time? Really? Seems a little too soon to be giving it that much praise.
Sharon, New York City, United States
I like the idea, but the list really is all over the place. If you're going to do something like this, you should have explanations for each pick.
Tim, Basking Ridge, NJ,
Your list is not bad and I would put Casablanca at number 1.
The Towering Inferno is in no way a great movie. It exists for two reasons. To show off famous faces and get popcorn down people's throats.
Plus, Citizen Kane is still one of the greatest films ever made.
Chris Zeidel, San Luis Obispo, United States
How can you not include "The Ten Commandments"?
Bob, Long Island, U.S.A.
The Third Man
Les Enfants du Paradis
Olivier's Hamlet
Jules and Jim
The Lady Vanishes, original version
Invasion of the Body Snatchers, original version
Ninotchka
Ben Harte, New York,
How does the shinig manage to feature so highly. Beautifully shot but lacking any emotional engagemet. Actually I've just described pretty nuch all Kubrick films.
simon, Christchuch, NZ
Am I the only one that thinks Casablanca is overrated and far too high up the list?
It is definitely a "stock choice" for many of these top lists but in my opinion (just an opinion) it is no where near as deserving as many others on this list!
Han, Wilmington, United States
I like it. Everyone's tastes are going to be different, and this list celebrates that fact. Seeing a film as superior to another one is, to a certain degree, based on personal opinion. We can all agree that there are plenty of great movies, but the order you list them in will always differ.
Steve, Grimsby, Canada
I was impressed with the breadth of films like Beau Travail and Picnic at Hanging Rock. I accepted that there would be oversights, but some are rather glaring: no Ben-Hur (I'd live with El Cid)? Persona? Brazil? Peeping Tom? These films have inspired more theory and filmmakers than T2 or Point Break
Jake Beal, Los Angeles,
I think that the list might have been better without the 1-100 ranking. Even some of the more dubious choices would have been better accepted were they not usurping superior films. As much as I love ESOTSM and TWBB, they have to age before they reach that high.
Jonathan, Woodstock, US
No Chaplin? That's a shame. "there will be blood" for number two? I loved the film, but frankly I'm not a big fan of it being so high. Still, I actually do really like this list just for it's uniqueness. I mean, it's about time we see something that creates more debate.....
Gray Lindsey, Atlanta,
POINT BREAK? I must have forgotten Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze's signifigance in the hall of acting contributions. That must explain the inclusion of the Matrix. The Towering Inferno? Look, I'm glad you are giving the oft-maligned action genre a place on the list, and I agree with Terminator 2
Will, Columbia,
It's funny to see the difference in the list simply because it is a British list, versus the AFI which is obviously American. Examples: Kes is a movie most Yanks have never heard of much less seen. Life of Brian would be replaced by Holy Grail on an American list. But "Towering Inferno?" Really?
Brian, St. Louis, USA
No wild bunch movies -- The Wild Bunch or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid --- if you have The Philadelphia Story then you do not need Sinatra and crosby in High Society-- My Fair LAdy = joke right??--- Terminator 2 is better than Midnight Cowboy?? too many sudtin hoffman pictures-- Shawshank Re
dave, wethersfield, us
did i miss Singin in the Rain -- way better than My Fair Lady or HIgh Society---- Shawshank Redemption and Forest Gump both came out the same year as Puldp Fictiona nd both were better than Pulp Fiction
dave, wethersfield, us
I was happily surprised by the list, specifically many of the more modern inclusions. However, "The Shining" is an absolutely AWFUL movie and would be much more appropriately placed on a Worst 100 list. #5 is insanity! "Point Break" was another terrible choice, but at least it was near the bottom.
Fletch, Cincinnati, OH,
That 'The Empire Strikes Back' doesn't make the top 5 is the biggest crime of this list but it's good to see a more unconventional list like this. A few arguable omissions - Memento; Amelie; Magnolia - and a few arguable inclusions - The Breakfast Club; Deliverance; Lost in Translation - not bad...
Rick Bennett, Comber, County Down
Your exclusion of Citizen Kane really puzzles me. Touch of Evil may have more resonance, but Kane is still an extremely resonant film, worthy of a spot somewhere on the list. Maybe not #1, but excluding Kane altogether while including films like Jurassic Park and Point Break seems an odd statement.
Will, Toronto, Ontario
Okay....how did "The Breakfast Club" come in as a better (or more 'great') film than "Gone with the Wind"? I mean, I like Breakfast Club, but ....seriously? The criteria for a great film is really a matter of opinion, unless basing the list on how many oscars it won. Totally different list then.
Libby, Fort Worth, USA
Not a single John Carpenter film on the entire list, for shame.
Edward James Olmos, Los Angeles, USA
The ingredients: safe classics mixed with a few Cahiers du Cinema-style "you gotta be kidding me" selections, and then, as all such lists, filled out with mediocre epics. Instead of obvious and obtuse choices, the list would have been better with some obscure choices that could lead to discovery.
Jill Michel, Montreal, Canada
How is Point Break on any movie list besides Top 10 most awesomely bad cop dramas?
Ray Creamer, Lima, U.S.A.
Only 15 international films, no Citizen Kane, no 8 1/2, no Grand Illusion or Rules of the Game, pratically no New Wave movie (nether French, German...). No independant movies, only one Bergman, etc. Seems like the most out-of-his-mind movie list I ever came across.
Mathieu L.-G., Montréal, Canada
Apparently nobody at TIME has seen Donnie Darko. That's the only explanation for it not being on the list.
Parker Johnston, Toronto, Canada
Let's not have a string of where is _______! (Fill in the blank.) The list is meant to have one wonder why certain fillms are on the list and others are not -- so instead of asking, ponder why the authors have included and excluded certain films. The point is that one re-think lists, cinema, etc.
matt, Austin, USA
What? No Lord of the Rings? Seriously? Only one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of our time. There Will Be Blood? One of the worst movies EVER and you can drink your milkshake on that!
Julie, Walnut Creek,
Also, the omission of "Radiers of the Lost Ark" shows an incredible lack of regard for the history and culture of cinema. Saying "Point Break" is a better/more important film than Raiders is like making a list of the Top-100 television shows and including "T.J.Hooker" and then leaving off "Seinfeld"
Parker Johnston, Toronto, Canada
Where is BEN HUR (1959)?
Steven Thomson, AYR, CANADA
How could 2001 be lower ranked than Alien(??!) or ET(???)?
Lester, Manhattan, KS, USA
Lists like this are pointless...
unless you clearly define your terms...what does 'great' mean? 'top', 'favorite' etc...
unless there is some general agreement about what criteria is used this list is just that, a list.
Citezen Kane not on the list but Point Break is?
that's fine but tell us WHY.
goldfarb, Toronto, Canada
Every list is contentious. This is no different. The compilers can't seem to make up their mind if they are making a list of movies they like but aren't Great (Jurassic Park), or are making a list of movies that are Great but not as fun to watch (Do the Right Thing).
Pete, Leawood, KS, USA
The Towering Inferno? Cheesy special effects; acting so overwrought even pigs think it's hammy; and a script that was written by combining the plots of two novels make The Towering Inferno one of the worst (and excrutiangly long) movies I can remember ever seeing.
Brian, Philadelphia,
Where is The Shawshank Redemption? Point Break but not that?! Come on!
Brian, Kingston, ON, Canada
Where is The Sting or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or even Bonnie and Clyde? For real...
Emily, Anderson, SC
Pulp Fiction is 59 and The Matrix is 55? What? Love the placement of Sunset Blvd though!
Rob, San Pedro, CA, USA
Memento? Where are you Memento?
Rob, San Pedro, CA, USA
The list is certainly meant to cause debate I have to say though Breakfast Club at number 22?? When there is no room for the Usual Suspects, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindlers List, Resevoir Dogs etc. As for the order Towering Inferno above films like Rear Window and Fargo????
B Jones, Rochester, England
No "Raiders of the Lost Ark"? It inspired cinema-goers and filmmakers into a new generation of watching and making films! The list is good, but the omission of such a fantastic, epic and downright perfect and influencial film is blasphemy, no matter the type of list.
Tom Barnard, Bournemouth,
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a woeful show. Just because the cast members are ALL good actors doesn't mean they can't make an utterly nonsensical film. I'm dissapointed. Goodfellas should never be down as low either. This list just looks like an attempt to be overly-controversial.
Kevin Stanton, Midleton, Ireland
There Will Be Blood at #2? I'd say it was last year's best film, but I'd also let more recent fare sit a while to see how well it stands the test of time before putting it on an all-time best list, much less placing it so high. Even omitting TWBB, though, I'd include Magnolia from PTA's oeuvre.
Ashley, Brooklyn, USA
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a better movie than The Godfather? Seriously?
Amanda, Baton Rouge, USA
I'm not sure There Will Be Blood deserves the number 2 spot. If any '07 movie deserves that, it's No Country for Old Men, for the same reason that Touch of Evil made it to this list over Citizen Kane. It's more unique and thought-provoking, I believe, than There Will Be Blood.
Jim, Lancaster,
At last ,a top 100 movie list without Shawshank. Its not a bad movie, just vastly over-rated. Good to see the aussie Picnic at Hanging Rock in there even if it also rides on a not quite deserved reputation.
David, Melbourne, Australia
Anyone who votes There Will Be Blood and ET above Bladerunner, Fargo and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is clearly insane. There Will Be Blood is drawn-out, over-hyped cack and in 12 months time everyone will come to their senses and realise this.
As for ET; may God have mercy on your soul.
Mac Boswell, Manchester, England
One thing I can say is that I'm overjoyed at your inclusion of There Will Be Blood on the number 2 spot ! It's possibly the best film I've ever seen ! But why put Casablanca ahead of it ? Is it truly better ? Otherwise, come on, how could you not include Psycho, the best slasher film and the first ?
Michael, Bordeaux, France
No list that esteems pitch-perfect acting, matchless cinematography, and a director's hand so subtle as to be virtually inaudible can omit 'Brokeback Mountain'. No film has ever dealt with unrealized love, fear, and the Path Not Taken -- permanent issues in the lives of humans -- as tastefully.
Dr Charles Barber, Vancouver, BC
If we are going to include foreign films, then where is The Rules of the Game and Seven Samurai, and of American Films, Where is Citizen Kane, Lawerance of Arabia, and To Kill a Mockingbird? I can not even start to think this is a good list, and for those who see this list so great, miss so much
Adam, Berwyn,IL,
Congratulations on avoiding the inclusion of shockingly overrated nonsense like Schindlers List, The Shawshank Redemption, The Usual Suspects, and several other films that only profoundly stupid people rank among the greatest of all-time.
Robert McCall, New York City, USA
Whatever happened to Kurosawa's Seven Samurai? Possibly the greatest film ever made. A film which inspired Lucas to make the Star Wars films and those of Coppola - ask any list of film director what they think of this masterpiece and you'll find that it appears in many of their top 10 films.
Gary Copping, Brentwood , Essex
'There Will Be Blood' is a faberge egg. Intrisically valuable, for it's technical merits, but from this American's point of view, entirely hollow. It offers nothing new, a summation of what we already know in an unarguably fantastic package. It deserves praise, but not of this sort. What a shame
Taylor, San Francisco, USA
No Schindlers List, Shawshank, Usual Suspects who compiled this list...its utter tripe from start to finish
Simon Kimbrell, Stratford-Upon-Avon,
Any list of top 100 fims of all time that does not include Schindlers List, American Beauty, Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption and Seven to name a few is not contententious, niether will it stimulate argument, at best it should be ignored!
tim bunch, hornsea, east yorks
"In The Heat Of The Night," starring Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier, won Best Picture Oscar for 1967. It is still, in my opinion, one of the great under-rated films. I just could not omit it from any list of top films. Mr. JJ Reid of Stonehaven makes a valid point also.
