There are no fewer than 15 shows called Something: The Musical on this year’s Fringe, from Asbo to Orgasm, all doubtless in pursuit of this year’s new prize for music theatre. If there were a prize for poor taste, the creators of this show might have been hoping for a podium finish at least, though there is something else called "Cabaret Auschwitz" which would surely run them pretty close.
So let’s clear away the froth. If it is racial or religious stereotypes you are worried about, the show is about as offensive as "Fiddler on the Roof". It is not supposed to be taken seriously and so far as its feeble satire goes, it barely lands a punch. If, however, it is offences against the art form that produced "Oklahoma!", "Chicago" and "West Side Story" that concern you, that’s another matter. Because easily the most inspired part of this show is its title.
The plot, such as it is, involves a young Afghani flower-seller, Sayid Al Boom – the name is indicative of the general level of wit - who is seduced into coming to the west, joining a terrorist cell and becoming a suicide bomber. His sister travels to the nameless city he has ended up in, probably New York where this show originates, to stop him. The ambitious Fox News reporter whom we first meet in Jalalabad encourages him so long as she can film the whole thing.
Doubtless, you can see the laughs coming a mile off and if I tell you that among the numbers are "The Jihad Jive", "I want to be like Osama", and "Building a Bomb Today", you will already be rolling in the aisles. In fairness, the show is not without its clever moments – more of them in the music than the book, although the pink lame burkhas are worth waiting for – and some of the late-night audience on the first night were roaring their approval.
But in general this is tricky territory to make light, satirical musical comedy about, and Zoe Samuel and Benjamin Scheuer, the co-writers, while keen to show that they have done their homework, are simply not up to the job much beyond the level of a student revue.
However, in Sorab Wadia, who plays the leader of the terrorist cell, every inch the sharp-suited Arab businessman, they have a performer of real class who can both sing and dance, and brings the whole production to life every time he is on stage.

Offensive? Why should it not be, or not have been, offensive?
The god-guided bombing of civilians is more than offensive.
These criminal inadequates should be comprehensively ridiculed at every opportunity. Treating them seriously merely makes their point for them.
