Stewart Lee has being doing stand-up for 21 years, and says he's been in fashion three times. If he has two more moments in the sun before he's 60, he'll have enough money to retire. So is stand-up a viable career option?
One of Britain's most popular comics, Stewart Lee is the man behind Fist of Fun (with Richard Herring) and the controversial Jerry Springer - The Opera. Earlier this year, his BBC television show Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle destroyed the banality of today’s flimsy culture, from celebrity hardback books to Del Boy falling through the hatch on Only Fools and Horses.
In last year's Edinburgh show Lee satirised a Channel 4 poll that named him 41st Best Stand-Up Ever, a strange position when Ricky Gervais has said he is the best stand-up ever — an endorsement Lee quickly slapped on his poster.
Dominic Maxwell is Theatre & Comedy Editor of The Times. He sees five shows a day for three weeks while in Edinburgh, and is a judge on the Edinburgh Comedy Awards (formerly The Perrier Award and if.comedy Award).
