WE SAY: No matter how much we evolve as a species over the next few millennia, no matter how far away we get from our hunter-gatherer programming, there will always be a part of us that from time to time craves a bit of dumb, stupid, primal swaggering guitar action in our lives – especially now, as the eunuch rock of The Kooks provides a tepid template for the mainstream.

Following up the gladly received In One Ear, Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked emerges from the wilderness with a valid claim to be the no-good, long-lost nephew of The Black Crowes and Lynard Skynnard. And with good reason – Matt paints a world filled with hookers and muggers over the finest slide guitar riff since Beck’s Loser. This is as good a piece of low-slung tobacco-chewing funk rock as you will hear this year or next.

IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Cage The Elephant appear to be the support band of choice at the moment. Everyone from The Foals and Queens Of The Stone Age have let them have a go warming up for them, and if you’re off to see the Pigeon Detectives, then this lot will be waiting for you.
