Opera singer Russell Watson’s voice may be affected by the brain surgery he underwent last week, as doctors operated via his mouth.
The Salford-born tenor underwent three hours of emergency surgery last Thursday after he fell ill while working on his new album at a recording studio. An MRI scan revealed a bleeding brain tumour.
It was the second time Watson, 40, has undergone brain surgery. Last year the singer was operated on after doctors found a brain tumour the size of two golf balls.
The first tumour was reached via Watson’s nose, but scar tissue prevented surgeons working in the same way last week.
The singer’s manager Richard Thompson said: "There was some concern because when he came out of theatre he was having trouble speaking, but he's speaking normally now.
"It is a worry, but we don't know how much of a worry. When he had the operation a year ago we didn't want to go through the mouth for obvious reasons, but there was no option this time.
"He's got stitches in his mouth and they'll need to heal. But he will be singing again."
Thompson said support for the singer, who has now been moved from intensive care, had been "off the scale". Friends and family, including his two young daughters, have been visiting the singer at Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle, Cheshire.
Earlier this year Watson spoke to The Times of his fight to recover from his first operation in October 2006: “I remember one night standing on the balcony, full of dark thoughts and self-pity, thinking ‘God, this is f***ing terrible, why me?’ I went back to bed, couldn’t sleep, got up again. I thought I’d had enough. If it hadn’t been for the girls . . .”
Watson was unable to leave the house for more than two months after the initial operation.
Last week, Mr Michael Stroud, executive director of the Alexandra Hospital said Watson knew he faced another long recuperation period. “He understands that his recovery plan may be a long haul”
Known variously as the “working men’s tenor” and “The Voice,” Watson has sold four million albums worldwide since his blend of opera and pop shot him to fame in 1999.
Watson was due to release his new album on November 26.

Hi, I would like to wish you well and a speedy recovery. I do have a personel interest in your illness as my wife has been living with a golf ball size lump on her piturity glad for ten years.
She has refued all offers of surgery and is so scared of the future. She has told them she would have an op. if they could garrantee she would be cured! But as you know they cannot do this. I greatly admire her as at the age of 42 she has embarked upon a degree courese and is working fulltime, saying that she could be run over by a bus tomorrow, and you are a long time dead. Very possitive, which I hope you are able to be. Good luck and our thoughts are with you.

Hi Russell, get well !! your new album is BRILLIANT ! totally unforgetable.I tried to get it in various shops and it was sold out,bu eventually got the last one w.h.smith in Livingston. But n DVD was to be had.I thin these stores have greatly underestimated the demand for your work !

Hi Russell,I hope you are feeling much better now, and, will be back singing for us in the very near future.Every time I watch you I'm aware of your great humility, and the way you seem amazed that so many people appreciate your wonderful voice, unlike todays 5 minute talentless wonders who seem to think we should be grateful for their precence. It's people like you who bring the wonderful opera arias to the attention of people who would normally never hear them.May god speed your recovery, and get you back to us as soon as possible.

For the past 8 weeks I have been undergoing tests and I am waiting for a decision by my Surgeon as to which path I will be taking having been diagnosed a second time in my life with cancer. Getting very little sleep (due mainly to worry I suppose), I transferred 3 of your CDs onto my new IPOD. Just listening to you has provided great comfort, and I can only hope that every person who is thinking of you during this rough patch is providing you with the same comfort. I just know you are going to be well again, hang in there, we love and need you.

Hello Russell, I have never had the pleasure of seeing you in person or even on TV. I had my daughter set her VCR up to record your performance at the NFL football game and she called me and said it was someone else that sang the anthem. It wasn't until that nite after I checked your website that I found out about your surgery. You are in my prayers and I hope to one day see you sing in person. In the meantime I am wearing out The Pearl Fishers Duet. I am a soprano, but I manage to sing along with you, even if I have to change keys sometimes. I love that song. Take care and do what your doctors suggest and get well soon. I really want to see you in the USA before I get much older (I am 62). I can't wait to get your new CD. Sharon Hames

You have been in my prayers from the moment I heard about your surgery. I pray for you daily that God will heal you. Psalm 121 comes to mind for you. Keep your chin up Russell, I am sure you will sing again, albeit after a long time. Your fans are all rooting for you and have enjoyed many hours listening to your wonderful voice. We also enjoyed your recent spell on TV when you sang with a non-singer, which proved to be most enjoyable. You were so gracious with her, a real gentlman and I wish you all the luck in the world for a speedy recovery.

I am just so pleased to hear that Russell will be making a recovery. I have never met him but love his voice, he has been in my thoughts since this happened which is so sad for this second time, and I have prayed for him to pull through.
It will be a shame if he cannot sing again, but I think this is a relatively small price to pay as it has turned out. All that matters is he is here for his little girls.
Right now, all I can say to him is to hang on in there, there are so many people genuinely wishing him better.
I always liked Russell since I watched a TV chat show with him on, he has the most cheeky smile and twinkling eyes, a truly nice guy and there arent many of them around, and its plain to see.
Just get better Russell, take it a day at a time, you are over the worst of it believe it or not.
Love, Mo.
