Given the anguish and humiliation that Shilpa Shetty suffered in the Celebrity Big Brother house this year, the British public are probably prepared to forgive her almost anything. Even so, she is pushing her luck with this shoddy piece of opportunism. Our admiration for the grace and generosity with which Shetty stood up to Jade Goody and her ignorant, xenophobic cronies made a winner and a heroine of the Bollywood actress. But this ill-conceived, half-baked star vehicle does her – and us – no favours.
The show, scripted by the Bollywood screenwriter Niranjan Iyengar, blatantly exploits Shetty’s Celebrity Big Brother ordeal. She could have seized the opportunity to reveal the talent behind the controversy. Instead, she is content to reprise her reality TV role as proud, injured innocent. There are knowing jokes about her lip-locking encounter with Richard Gere and Celebrity Big Brother incarceration (“I’ve learnt that life can’t all be Goody Goody”), as well as platitudes about extending the hand of friendship across cultural frontiers.
Shetty certainly looks stunning, her body all muscular femininity, skin and hair gleaming. Her first appearance – in a midriff-revealing orange outfit – prompted whoops of excitement but when she wasn’t undulating her killer curves, impatient shuffling and muttering set in. Anyone who wasn’t paying attention between numbers – a selection of hits from Bollywood movies – didn’t miss much.
The preposterous plot, set in London in the near future, pivots on the conflict between an Indian dance teacher, Maya (Shetty), whose premises are under threat from the Olympic building programme, and a duplicitous Westernised impresario who wants Maya to add Indian spice to his company so that he can claim cultural diversity and win a spot at the Mayor’s Trafalgar Square gala. There are also Maya’s profoundly irritating neighbours and a beefy-but-sensitive love interest.
Needless to say, the spirit of togetherness triumphs in the end. Farfetched stories, overblown production numbers and sentimentality are all part of Bollywood’s appeal. But where The Merchants of Bollywood, last year’s touring dance-theatre extravaganza, thrilled with the scale and sparkle this show is lacklustre. The dancers are mechanical, the script diabolical, the acting amateurish and the costumes look nastily cheap. It all lacks brio and excitement; and though she is elegant to the last, Shetty alone isn’t enough to make it worthwhile. It’s a shame that, having endured Celebrity Big Brother with such dignity, she has gone on to capitalise on the experience with a substandard project that reeks of cynicism.

I went to see the show with a friend when it played at the Albert Hall, London.
It was awful.
We walked out after 40 minutes - believe me - after paying several hundred quid to stay in London and see the show, I was most miffed.
For a live performance, there was very little that was actually live, except for the dancers. The miusic was recorded, the vocals, as far as I could tell, were lip synced and the acting was terrible.
I've seen plenty of stage shows and plenty of Bollywood movies, and this has got to have been the worst 40 minutes of entertainment I've ever endured. It was even worse than the recently revived Joseph - but don't get me started on how cheap and naff that show has become!

Miss Bollywood was superb when I saw it in Glasgow recently. It was full of energy and fine dancing, and had several strong characters, not just Shilpa Shetty, who almost had the show stolen from her by the delightful little girl who had such a big part. Costumes were beautiful. Most enjoyable and memorable! I give it a full five stars.

It is so nice to see so many people giving positve feedback on Miss Bollywood. I went to to see it in Birmingham and was very impressed. I watched the whole show with a smile on my face and didn't want it to end. It was spectacular. Those of us who love to watch Bollywood and their famous song and dance sequences will think they have died and gone to heaven!!!Think the critic here is either lacking in Bollywood knowledge or was not having a very good day when writing this review. Why shouldn't she exploit her ordeal on Celeb BB? Shilpa's references to BB and Gere are not offensive and have been taken too seriously. To me, it showed that she is able to joke about it and not be so bitter which I know most of us would.I just hope Shilpa continues to embrace her new found status, in the UK especially and show the world why she deserves to be on that stage.
Well done Shilpa!!!!

Like a number of your other commentators, I'm not sure which show this critic went to see but it wasn't the show I went to see with my friends and family in Cambridge, and thoroughly enjoyed!! I'm not a great Bollywood fan, but this show had all the ingredients of an excellent performance; fantastic dance routines, great music, stunning costumes and effects and slapstick humour. It was one of the best live perfomances I have seen - and I have seen many! Even the couple of technical hitches which meant there was no sound, didn't really affect our enjoyment of the show too much. We all came out of it feeling entertained and happy we had made the investment of going out on a cold November night!! ......and from feeling the buzz at the end of the show, we weren't the only ones. Well Done Shilpa and team!!
Veena, Cambridge,
I saw the show in Cambridge last night. The music was powerfull, the dancing was breathtaking and expressive of love, vitality and life. Shilpa Shetty was exotic and wonderful. The best show I have seen for a long time - Chris from March.
CHRIS WOODS, MARCH, CAMBS

I saw the show last night in Cambridge and it was brilliant - I had heard before going that it was not os good in Manchester but I was very pleasantly surprised. Everything about the show was excellent and she looked amazing. The costumes were gorgeous, the dancers were brilliant and overall the show was one of the best I have been too - well done Shilpa and her whole team.
Raj, London,
I saw the show in birmingham on saturday and thought it was amazing! all credit to shilpa.she looked stunning, great songs, danced well and the costumes were breathtaking.not quite sure what the negativity by the critics is all about.
Priya, Yorkshire,
I saw the show last night and thought it was brilliant. I don't know what this critic is on about. You should give credit where it is due. I saw everyone around me thoroughly enjoying the show and when people were leaving each and everyone had a smile on their face, and were constantly talking about the performace. The show was worth every penny. A huge thumbs up from me and well done to Shilpa Shetty and her team to provide such a high quality entertainment for us.

Went to watch the show last night in Birmingham, it was entertaining. Costumes were lovely, dancing was great, had me dancing in my seat to the bollywood music. It was an enjoyable evening, Shilpa did well along with the whole team. There was applaude from theaudience when they brought in comments such as that of Richard Gere, goody goody and Big Brother. You'll come away from this show with positive remarks.
Selina devi, West Midlands,
went to the show in aberdeen last night ,just loved it from start to finish ,shilpa was beautiful and the costumes and dancing was fantastic !! loved the storyline ,in fact loved everything about it ,would go back tonight and watch it all over again !!
violet, aberdeen,
The show was fabulous. Shilpa has done very well. 5 stars to her performance. The audience was mesmerised. The costumes were fantastic. The other dancers including Mr J Mohommed were also fantastic.
I totally disagree with the critisism in the review. The use o Richard Gere and Goody Goody tells us it is all in the past and Shilpa has moved on . Good for her!!! or should I say Goody for her :)
Three Cheers for Shilpa , the other dancers and Bollywood. Good show ! Well done!!!
R, Leeds, UK
just been to see the show tonight in aberdeen..was absolutely amazed! it was beautiful funny and exciting! how anyone can say anything about this show was "diabolical" amazes me! i have always been in to the excitiment and unrealsitic storys of bollywood! but this was far beyond anything ihave ever seen or hear! shilpa looked amazing! the dancers was amazing! the costumes were amazing..i guess you can say the whole thing was...AMAZING! recommended to everyone!
simone, aberdeen,
I watched the show and it was fantastic, story linei was told is the traditional plot of love and challenges. Perhaps cornt, but a pleasant entertaining evening. Shilpa looked stuning. Yes you learn a lot of cultural awareess too. The crowds enjoyed and were smiling all the way through as well as when everyone lefy after the show. Great performances...article people have no idea...they just want to make an issue out of everything....it wouldny hurt to say 'Great Perfomanc' when it evidently is.
Linda, Leeds, UK
I think it boils down to a basic lack of Bollywood knowledge from your critic. I'm an avid theatre-goer and love companies such as the RSC and independent gems like Northern Broadsides and Kneehigh.
However, although the plot of this show was transparent, this was a lovely vehicle for some first-rate dancing. Merchants of Bollywood hardly had a BAFTA-winning plot as I recall and most Bollywood films are vehicles for high-energy, happy, uplifting dance routines and songs.
The review smacks of snobbery - or simply not knowing your onions (onion bahjis perhaps?)
Stuart, West Yorkshire, UK
my family and myself enjoyed the show dont know what show the critic watched but i dont think it was the same as me. shilpa did a wonderfull job enjouyed every second of it never a dull moment. its a shame. time flew by
rabs, bolton, uk
To what i have heard about the show, is totally different from what i have seen here in the remarks..the songs are smashing,,,shilpa dances superbly..looks stunning..and its enjoyable..if you talk about the story,,how many movies we see with a sound story are woth enjoying regardless of they being a Hollywood movie or a Bollywood ??what matter most is that u enjoy the time nd the play..for me i have anjoyed every bit..and so do my friends and relatives..
Sania, Manchester,
Andrea...I absolutely agree....what on earth is that critic going on about.
I can tell you on a winters night in Manchester there was nothing better than to warm things up at the opera house last night.
Cause the plot was rubbish...but so what. She was beautiful, never stopped smiling and by the end of the night we had all fallen into that fantascy world of make believe .....great music ...big laughs inbetween.
This was the best fun we have had in Manchester since United beat Roma 7 0 last season.
Lets have more fun and less over analitical critical doom.
Cheer up ...we did

About time! Ms Sheety has for too long lived on the undeserved credit. Agrees she didn't have the best of luck (read treated like garbage) on Big Brother....that said, not sure form where and how the fanfare set in. Any hindi cineam buff would be hard pressed to recall a Shetty film that did well on the box office or one where her performance was critically acclaimed. She's been around the bollywood scene for the better part of 12 years and has never made it as a "bollywood star." Acting might not be ger forte and the sooner she realizes this the better - for her and the audience. Humble suggestion - Ms Shetty you are stunning to look at - stick to the ad film world and you might just make it...

First up - I haven't seen the show but I have watched many a Bollywood film (in my past life). Eeuw! Going by the feedback from readers put in here it seems that the first line of this article has probably hit the nail on the head, albeit a trifle overdramatic a la Bollywood. The flamboyant colours, never-ending hamming, opulent song-and-dance sequences, over-the-top dramatics and nonsensical story lines are what typify the Bollywood genre. The "racism" and politically correct behaviour publicity of Ms.SS has been a shot in the arm for Bollywood and for her in particular. In this scenario, opportunism was a given whether one likes it or not. However, for the British people to suddenly discover or rediscover Bollywood and jump onto this Bollywood appreciation bandwagon is bizarre to say the least. Well, to each his/her own. However, you've got to be ready to take the rough with the smooth.

I also saw this show on Sunday and wonder whether the journalist above maybe walked into a parallel universe? Because the show I watched was thoroughly enjoyable, the costumes were fab and the dance routines did not disappoint. The only 'muttering' I heard from the audience were the whoops of recognition of the songs from the girls sitting next to me! I have never been to a show with such a great atmosphere, the dancing in the aisles being the icing on the cake. And so what if there was the odd reference to Shilpa's recent headlines!... even Shakespeare used that trick to appeal to all of his audience!
AndreaC, Blackpool,
I saw the show on Saturday night and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experince. I thought it was tremendously entertaining from start to finish and I'd recommend it to anyone. The storyline might not have been as strong as it could have, but who cares?. The music and dancing more than made up for that. I certainly didn't notice any of the impatient shuffling or mutterings that you claim to have heard. As for the costumes, I thought they looked fantastic, it would never have crossed my mind in a million years to have described them as "nastily cheap". The one thing I do agree with you on is how good Shilpa looked, she was stunning.
Gary Smith, Manchester,
This article is so weak, no valid points to be fair. The press should try and be nice no point trying to slam Shilpa shes know's her stuff! And yeah i saw the show aswell, was fantastic noticed no problems except Shilps and her team working real hard! Was brilliant so worth while. I will defi watch more bollywood films! She looks amazing great story i would go see it!
David jones, Westmidlands, Birmingham
I also watched the show, there were no impatient shuffling or muttering between dances. It was execellent event overall. In my opinion it deserves atleast three stars. This is the public's opinnion. Hope you journalists can appriciate this.

I saw this show on Sunday in Manchester and noticed no impatient shuffling or muttering between dances. The show was fun, everyone dancing in the aisles and singing along to the classic Bollywood tunes. Yes the story was weak but most people went there expecting a song and dance spectacular which is exactly what Miss Shetty and her cast delivered.
