"Chiwetel Ejiofor produces one of the most memorable performances of Othello in recent years. His interpretation of the angst-ridden Moor is beautifully balanced and judged. Sadly, though, the same cannot be said of Ewan McGregor's take on the devilish Iago. We wanted to taste and smell Iago's villainy, and instead we got a rather testy young Scotsman" The Daily Express
"I'd be reluctant to part with a tenner for his [Ewan McGregor’s] performance… In a rare botched shot from director Michael Grandage, McGregor is by far the weakest link in a disappointing production" The Telegraph
“The secret of the success of Michael Grandage's extraordinarily fresh and new-minted production is that, for once, nothing in this familiar tragedy feels like a foregone conclusion” The Independent
"This [Chiwetel Ejiofor's] is a performance that, in its descent from majestic dignity to deluded rage, suggests a great and noble building being destroyed by the wrecker's ball" The Guardian
"Chiwetel Ejiofor achieves something extraordinary and historic... he offers a riveting, psychological diagnosis of Othello as a black African outsider in a white world, whose sexual and social insecurities make him masochistically susceptible to the sadistic manipulations of Ewan McGregor's Mr Monochrome - an Iago with a personality by-pass" The Evening Standard
"This is an Othello which magisterially reasserts the values of period pomp... It is performed to the highest standards, a strong cast being drilled to an inch of perfection by director Michael Grandage... It surely can not be long before Mr Grandage is placed in charge of the Royal National Theatre" The Mail on Sunday online

ive just got back from seeing it and sadly charles spencer was right. Ewan McGregor was a very disappointing Iago, it was so bland and monotone, there wasnt the depth there. You got no sense of his shrewdness and him calculating at all...like the review said there was no light or dark no tonal change. Kelly Reilly.....eeek it was cringeworthy....i think she was having some problem with projection so her voice seemed to go up and down and yet there was no emotion, you got no sense of vulnerability and personality at all. I know these actors have played some great parts really well elsewhere perhaps and so are 'big names' but how can people think they are good? Ejiofor was amazing...absolutely incredible and the actors who played cassio and emilia were brilliant. It was a really great production though even if the two of the three were dodgy....the rest of the cast saved them.
Kat, london,
Marcel's complaint about the £2000 ticket price seems to spring from the belief that that was the original selling price- of course NO production is worth that much! However, the £15-£20 face value of the ticket to see a cast of this calibre in such an intimate environment is surely one of the bargains of the year. Seeing it on Thursday, hoping it's at the very least better than Charles Spencer thought it was...
Pete, Coventry,
Ewan McGregor can no more be expected to have any proficiency in speaking Shakespearean verse than he presumably would have if he were to attempt to play the Beethoven Violin Concerto - for the simple reason that he has neither the experience or skill to bring either extremely difficult task to satisfactory fruition, What is perhaps most surprising is that Michael Grandage, a director of talent and experience, should have cast Mr McGregor. Was he thinking more of the box office takings at his theatre than his duty to the author?

Ewen MacGregor = Iago?
In a pig's valise...
Allan, Cowling,
Good or bad, it's too expensive. Tickets for Patrick Stewart as Macbeth or McKlellan as Lear were only £30-40 for decent seats. Neither Othello or McGregor is worth £2000.
