It is difficult to imagine a more ambitious stage project than turning the epic novel Gone With The Wind into a musical. Today, after the show’s West End premiere, director Sir Trevor Nunn and Margaret Martin, who wrote the book, music and lyrics for the production, may be wondering if the idea was too ambitious.
Critics have given the musical, starring former Pop Idol contestant Darius Danesh and Broadway actress Jill Paice, a collective thumbs down.
Awarding the 190-minute show two stars, The Times critic Benedict Nightingale declared it “too faithful to Margaret Mitchell’s novel” and “too long”.
Under the merciless heading ‘Gone With the Wind just blows’, Reuters reviewer Ray Bennett said Nunn had delivered “a long-winded show with rushed scenes, dull music and lyrics so banal that Rhett Butler is unlikely to be the only one who doesn't give a dam.”
The Guardian critic Michael Billington wrote that the musical felt like “a hectic, strip-cartoon account of a dated pop classic.”
The Telegraph’s Charles Spencer was even less impressed. Explaining he often felt like screaming during the performance, Spencer wrote: “When I emerged from the theatre after three hours and 40 minutes, it felt as if I had spent several years watching Gone with the Wind and that I had probably missed not just the Beijing Olympics but the London games planned for 2012 as well.”
The Independent reviewer Paul Taylor was more forgiving. Awarding the musical three stars, he wrote: “The show is neither as bad as one feared nor as good as one has a right to expect.”
He went onto call the score “forgettable” but “well sung”.
But the news wasn’t all bad. While Paice received mixed reviews, Danesh enjoyed wide-spread praise for his turn as Rhett Butler, being described variously as “diabolically dashing” and “a fine singer”.
The audience was appreciative too, giving the 27-year-old a standing ovation.

I have just seen GWTW on sat 10th May. Jill Paice delivered a superb and brilliant performance as Scarlett to the point that you begin to realise that this is a live version of the film which is what makes it so difficult to deliver. I'm glad I saw it just to see Jill's great talent as an actress.

A friend of mine went to see Gone with the Wind last week and was raving about how wonderful it was, especially Darius!

In my opinion the actors/singers did a fantastic job with a difficult material. The set up is amitious and very entertaining; isn't that the purpose. I think the critics would have been more positive if there had been a catchy tune to remember. But this musical is the opposite of mamamia. Be fair.

Is this the same musical version of GWTW that was on briefly at Drury Lane in 1973 or 4 (I was a stagehand in the fly tower)? That one wasn't any good either.
Grant Thompson, Rome, Italy
Being a huge GWTW fan I was delighted to see the story come alive . Darius was excellent as Rhett while understudy Savannah Stevenston WAS Scarlett for me.
It is too long, some songs were an interruption to the
story - cut back on them, eg Prissy solo, Melanie's deathbed offering etc

The musical was, sadly, not very musical and the cast not very accomplished. Too many scenes that did not push the plot along created boredom. A company like shared experience might have pulled this off: I have just seen their magnificent War and Peace

I saw the show on Saturday 19th and was very impressed. Although the songs are,as yet, unknown, there are several that I would like to hear again. I can't wait for the CD to come out!
Timothy Chaple, BEDFORD,
Not as bad as it could have been, but it lacked all the power of the book and film, partly because it was so rushed. For an audience to laugh when Rhett Butler leaves Scarlett after fleeing Atlanta shows how light-hearted the whole thing became; not a desirable quality in a story of heated passion.
Jo Austen, Woking,
Sadly I have to agree about this worthy but dull production. It simply lacks magic and I had predicted the critics verdict of not caring a damn long before Butler finally said his closing line

Saw gone with the wind on wednesday night. dress circle tickets with view of the stage obscured by the picket fence. couldnt believe the torment of sitting there until the interval - which my friend and I saw as a means of esape. |Torture of an epic kind. Similar to school play .

This article just proves my theory that you should not pay any attention to the critics A friend and I loved all of itThe staging is very impressive, songs memorable. Rhett Butler- I did give a damn about him, but the understudy filled in for Scarlet at the last minute. A stunning performance SEE IT

This article proves that critics' reviews should be banned.I saw this with a friend and we both loved it
the staging was amazing, when the understudy walked into the theatre she found she was playing Scarlet. She gave us a wonderful performance.standing ovations
SEE IT!

Saw it in previews, when we abandoned it after 3 hours and twenty minutes. The second half just drags on and on. Hopeless - but then, even if it fails, we did see it - and someone, someday, will crack this one and make a decent, engrossing musical out of Mitchell's novel, with hummable tunes!
Louise, London,
I went to the first night of the preview, was very disappointed. I am not surprise that the critics don't like it. I felt it was a torture! Especially the press evening they showed a "cut" version, and I had the full three course.
