Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme at the Hampstead, NW3
Pyper, an angry old man, played by James Hayes with a harsh, gurgling voice, recalls the men he fought with in the 1916 battle of the Somme. The sole survivor of a group of eight Protestant Irish soldiers, he can’t shake off their ghosts. Frank McGuinness’s 1985 comrades-of-war play hopscotches back in time to show us barrack-room animosities and men bonding as they wait to go over the top. The pity is that McGuinness doesn’t succeed in linking together the Ulster soldiers’ intimate personal dramas and the broader course of the campaign they are helpless participants in. John Dove’s sturdy if unsubtle production tends towards histrionics rather than keeping its characters’ anxieties on a taut leash. The design, with its spick-and-span trenches, could do more to nail the despoliation of war.
