The Shawshank Redemption (Sept 4) After a successful run in Dublin, a stage version of the much-loved film comes to the West End, starring the American actors Kevin Anderson and Reg E Cathey (The Wire). Wyndham’s, WC2
Enron (Sept 17) The most anticipated transfer of the season: Lucy Prebble’s account of the collapse of the American corporation, critically acclaimed on its premiere a few weeks ago in Chichester, comes to London, starring Sam West. Royal Court, SW1
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Sept 29) Be it on Brookside or the Upper East Side, it seems Anna Friel can play the ingénue for ever. Her next role is one of her biggest, playing Holly Golightly. Sean Mathias, whose star-studded Waiting for Godot has just finished its run at the same theatre, directs. Haymarket, SW1
Prick up Your Ears (Sept 17) Joe Orton’s comedies are often dark, but few stories are darker than his own, which ended with his death at the hands of his companion, Kenneth Halliwell. Here, in an adaptation of John Lahr’s biography, Matt Lucas plays the unfortunate Halliwell under Daniel Kramer’s direction. Comedy, SW1
Inherit the Wind (Sept 18) With his artistic directorship of the Old Vic now less turbulent than before, Kevin Spacey can tread “his” boards once more with ease. He takes the lead in Trevor Nunn’s production of Jerome Lawrence’s 1955 play. It’s about a persecuted teacher. Read into it what you will. Old Vic, SE1
Annie Get Your Gun (Oct 3) American gung-ho spirit arrives in the form of Jane Horrocks, of all people. She’ll be slinging up in this Irving Berlin musical. Young Vic, SE1
Life Is a Dream (Oct 8) How do you distinguish yourself from The Wire, where life is all too real? Star in a Spanish play written in the 1630s, called Life Is a Dream. Yes, Dominic West is back in Blighty. Donmar, WC2
Twelfth Night (Oct 21) Malvolio was a star turn for Derek Jacobi last season. This winter, the cross-gartered role will be Richard Wilson’s. The king of curmudgeonly will be attacking his run with relish. RSC, Stratford
The Habit of Art (Nov) Alan Bennett’s new play has been subjected to that most modern of phenomena, “internet rumours”, which claim that his new play focuses on the friendship between W.H. Auden and Benjamin Britten, and could star Michael Gambon. Who knows? National, SE1
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Dec 1) A bit of Broadway never goes amiss: this first version of the Tennessee Williams adaptation to feature an all-black cast comes with extra piquancy. James Earl Jones stars. Novello, WC2
BEST OF THE REST Another transfer will be Lenny Henry’s Othello, which arrives at Trafalgar Studios on Sept 11; the National gets political with Mother Courage and Her Children, starring Fiona Shaw (Sept), then downright fantastical with Nation, Mark Ravenhill’s adaptation of the Terry Pratchett novel (Nov). And Tamzin Outhwaite hopes to give the Menier another sleeper hit with Sweet Charity (Nov 21).
