REGGIE SMITH
I am researching and writing a biography of Reggie Smith, who passed into fiction on a train to Rumania in 1938, and emerged as “Guy Pringle” in the Balkans trilogy.
From Birmingham, Reggie joined the British Council, married Olivia Manning and with her escaped to Egypt. After the war he helped set up the Palestinian Broadcasting Service and later joined BBC Radio, making many distinguished programmes for the Third Programme and Home Service first in its Features Department and then in Drama.
A further career took Reggie into academia at the Universities of Ulster and Surrey, but his charisma and generosity of spirit outlive the re-inventions of his life. He died in 1985.
All information, particularly anecdotes, will be welcomed and acknowledged, and should be sent to Gerry Harrison, 3 Inkerman Road, London NW5 3BS, or to gerryharrison1@aol.com.

This Calendar will supplement the work of Gloria Fromm in Windows on Modernism: The Selected Letters of Dorothy Richardson, and my own works on Richardson, published by ELT Press in 1996, 1999, and 2001.
