Book of the Week, Radio 4, 9.45am/12.30am
The film director Leni Riefenstahl died in 2003 at the age of 101 — further proof, many would argue, that the good die young. Having presented Nazi Germany in a flattering light and profile via her films of the Berlin Olympics of 1936 and the Nuremberg rallies (not least with The Triumph of the Will), she went on to use concentration camp inmates in her movies for their “interesting” faces. Afterwards they were taken away to be murdered. All this week Kenneth Branagh reads from Leni: The Life and Work of Leni Riefenstahl by Steven Bach. It is fascinating — but be aware that you may need to have a bath and a bit of a dark moment of the soul after every reading.
Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie, Radio 2, 8pm
Radio 2’s admirable desire not to be found anywhere close to a laurels/reclining interface scenario finds the nation’s most popular station shuffling its evening programming pack. Full details may be discerned from the schedule (bbc.co.uk/radio2). Suffice to say that this pairing catches the eye, and not just because Radcliffe’s previous broadcasting sidekick rejoiced in the sobriquet of Lard. What does that tell us of Maconie’s place in this poptastic partnership?
6 Music Plays it Again, BBC 6 Music, 9.30pm
All this week David Quantick looks back at a time that, tradition has it, if you could remember, you weren’t there. What a silly thing to say. Even so, if The History of Psychedelia is not the grooviest thing you hear this week, you’re obviously tuning into a different radio station from the rest of us, man.
