Ghosts More 4, 10pm
The smoothie documentarian Nick Broomfield made an effortless move into fiction for this dramatic feature inspired by the 2004 Morecambe Bay tragedy, in which 23 illegal Chinese workers were drowned while cockle-picking in treacherous conditions. Focusing mostly on the photogenic single mother Ai Qin (Ai Qin Lin), Broomfield describes her punishing transformation from a restless pauper in southern China into an underpaid and ruthlessly exploited wage-slave in English meat factories and farms. Along the way the director depicts with entirely appropriate outrage Ai’s abuse at the hands of both avaricious Chinese gang masters and xenophobic natives. The quieter moments, such as the weepy phone conversations between Ai and her son, veer close to sentimentalism, but the closing-reel recreation of the tragedy itself is harrowing.

Hogan Knows Best Biography, 10pm
Hulk Hogan — you know, the blond, Viking-like wrestler who showed up in Rocky III — and his clan are the latest family to get The Osbournes treatment. As contrived as we’ve come to expect from reality-TV’s domestic soaps, this first episode follows Hulk’s daughter as she tries to kickstart a budding romance under his protective eye.
Storyville: A Story of People in War and Peace BBC Four, 10.30pm
The Armenia-Azerbaijan war took place between 1989 and 1994 and was one of the first signs of a Soviet collapse. Vardan Hovhannisyan was an Armenian war reporter in the trenches who filmed the soldiers’ last words to their families and their reflections on life and war. More than ten years on he returns to find villages still in ashes and veterans and their families still traumatised by events. It’s a moving film, with some grimly unflinching fontline footage.
