He may have been voted off American Idol but Sanjaya Malakar’s time in the spotlight has yet to end.
Against the odds, Malakar, 17, made it to the top seven in the US competition.
His singing talent was questionable, but his ever-changing hairdos and unfailing positivity in the face of cutting remarks from the judges, earned him a surprising following.
Beatle-esque scenes unfolded when Malakar appeared on the American Idol stage, with teenage girls screaming and sobbing.
Since being voted off the show on April 18, far from fading, Malakar’s fame has escalated.
On Saturday, he attended a White House correspondents’ dinner in Washington and was approached by Elliot Spitzer, the governor of New York who asked for an autograph.
On Monday, he appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman trailed by a now ever-present pack of paparazzi.
Malakar, who Amercian Idol judge Simon Powell described as “a horrible singer,” said he wants to use his sudden fame to become a singer, actor and model

Louise, Montreal, Canada
I think Sanjaya is going to be a huge star. By the way, Randy was the one who called Sanjaya one of the smartest contestants on the show, not Simon. He will go far in whatever he does, whether it is acting, modeling, singing or anything else. He was my favorite contestant on the show. Sanjaya is awesome! I wish other people would stop being so mean to him. He has so much talent and potential. I will buy his cd as soon as it reaches the stores.
Michelle, Baton Rouge, LA
He should really thank the fans and listeners of Howard Stern. It's because of that following which allowed him to squeak through week after week.
When he's 20 and all washed up lamenting in a trailer with Eric the Midget, he'll remember who made him what he is.
BaBa Beuy, Houston,
Sanjaya is the best!
He has demonstrated poise and maturity far beyond his years while at the same time maintaining his youthful innocence and joyfulness...that smile is wonderful! I think his voice is beautiful, and I think his personality is equally beautiful. I also appreciate how close knit his family seems to be... in fact they all seem to be very loving. I think it's a shame that the media has been so harsh on him and it's even sadder that so many people simple jumped on the band wagon. But hooray for the adversity, it will only make him stronger. It has already made him more widely known. Just think, how many Idols are known around the world by only their first name?
Go Sanjaya! You are well on your way, and I for one will support your every endeavor.
Renee, Reno, NV
I wish all the best luck to Sanjaya that he will find great songs to highlight his special qualities of warmth and goodwill.
I can't believe how there were so many attacks on him. In the real music world very few top selling artists have the pipes of an opera singer. Most of them succeed based on style appeal and charisma.
PJ, Tampa, USA Florida
Missed you, Sanjaya on AI last night. 'Ain't No Sunshine When You're Gone'. I'm getting my Tour tickets so I 'll enjoy your performance again. I loved your performance and was inspired by your character and self control!
Kayla Rozwalka, Petersburg, Fl.
didn't we elect a president not based on his talent, but his likability? I guess we deserve what we get. Politically and entertainmentwise.
Niki, NYC,
It's wonderful to see so many positive comments for Sanjaya. He has thousands of fans, and I'm one of them. Sanjaya has the 'shine'. He's different. He's special. He charmed us week after week with his winning personality, humor, and warm melodious voice. And he has friends in high places - Regis likes him. He said so on his show. So does J-Lo, Kelly Clarkson. Tony Bennett, Clay Aiken, Diana Ross and many, many more.
This is just the beginning for Sanjaya. I predict he's going to be a big star!
Joan Hall Hovey, NB, Canada
u dnt kno how happy i am knowin dat my man aint gay i luv him he is da sexxiiest gut out der and he can sing he sounded hot wen he sang besame mucho!!!!!!! i luv u sanjaya!!!!!! u my man
melany, Vicenza,
Thankfully Sanjaya is gone. Bye Bye Sanjaya, you made a mockery of the show and lacked true singing talent.
Idol Fan, Richmond, VA
Sanjaya was better than the other male singers on the show. He had sex appeal and a personality.
We were being pushed by the media telling us that we were stupid if we liked Sanjaya. Did any of them actually open their ears and listen to Chris Richards on the show? He has a nasally twanging voice that goes off key and only sounds right for country music. Phil sings in a foggy spooky voice and looks like Nosferatu the vampire. Did the media ever take a look at these other contestants? Does Blake really have the looks of a singing idol? Most of the time Blake is dead pan with zero emotion. How is that going to sell CDs?
I think people don't realize that once the show is over any winner has to be unique among the real recording artists. There are many good singers in the world already. Singing good isn't enough to sell CDs. Top sellers have to have a gimmick. For example.....Gwen Stephani can't sing but she dresses up like a cartoon.
PJ, Tampa, USA Florida
I hope that some one is smart enough to already be planning Sanjaya's solo CD. I know he must tour with AI soon, but he is riding on a great wave of popularity and that should be taken advantage of. Some of the contestants lose out by taking too long to put out their CD.
PJ, Tampa, USA Florida
Sanjaya gave the best and most truly Latin performance on Latin night. He's the first contestant to actually sing in Spanish and he did a good job! Contrast that to the fact that Lakisha could not even pronounce one Spanish word "Conga" correctly.
I think Sanjaya could be the next Julio Iglesias!!!! He is love and he has universal appeal !
¡Quiero más Sanjaya !
PJ, Tampa, USA Florida
We live in an era where producers have bombarded American youth with criminals who have become multi-millionaires with hip-hop rap language demeaning their own race, their mothers, sisters and brothers and glorifying lawlessness, violence, sex and drugs. Then, they have the gaul to portray and sell it as "art from the ghetto". America needs an idol with star-quality like Santaja who is the real mirror of our American youth -- wholesome, decent and loving. I hope there is a producer out there who will give America and the world the role-model we desperately need these days. That is, SANJAYA.
Rick, Bradenton, Florida
I'm a proud Fanjaya, and I have to say, if it were not for the media's fervent assertions that he is an "awful" singer, I would not have taken the time to download his music and discover the talents of a young man who I believe to be the first superstar of the 21st century. He CAN sing, and quite beautifully. His only real challenges are inexperience and an occasional bout of nervousness. His charisma, humility and grace under pressure are fast becoming legendary.
Kapua, Seaside, CA, USA
Yea I like the Kid...he adds a little zing to normal life. Tired of all the polished acts, the kids simplicity is apealing. Will definitely buy his cd..dvd...movie

I don't know why nobody likes him because he is so awesome! By the time somebody wins from American Idol, Sanjaya will already have produced one album and will have probally have a lot more wantings of him then anyone else, by probally the end of may, he will be number 1 and everyone will want him.
Sammi, Miami, Florida
I think Malakar deserved to get off, he was horrible and i think he defenetly would be better off acting or modeling, expesually all of those halarious hair do's or shall i call them, DON'TS. Even though he didn't win, he made if far, and seems pretty happy even though he got off, who knows, he probably will end up having a CD out long before they anounce the winners any ways, so in a way, i guess he did win.
Colie, Encinitas, California
Noone in my family of 7 people had ever watched AI before Sanjaya. We all fell in love with his big smile, innocence and courage, and yes we all thought he has a beautiful voice. He just needs more training. We were amazed by the cruelty of criticism he received. Give him a break. He is only 17, and has no professional experience. Sanjaya will be a huge megastar. He has the charm, charisma and personality that other AI contestants lack. We can't wait for his first CD, DVD, movie .... . Good Luck Sanjaya !
sara, san francisco,
Were you guys watching the same show?
Leo, Florham Park, NJ
I believe Sanjaya Malakar's honesty, to himself and others, is his hallmark and strength! He let his vulnerability and trust show, traits many entertainers are unwilling to share.
The fact that he could display such faith is encouraging to everyone. Younger people today need an image to 'dream' on, I think SANJAYA could manage that very well!
Vicki, Halifax, NS
Sanjaya made the show much more interesting. The kid has charisma and a nice soft romantic voice. He does sing on key !!! Sanjaya sings much better than the nasaly off key Chris Richards, or the spooky looking Phil.
I really have not understood the seeming pressure on the viewers that we were supposed to think Sanjaya wasn't a good singer. He was good or he wouldn't have been chosen by the judges to be on the show in the first place. I think it was and is a matter of taste. However it seems in our society we are all being pushed to like the same same thing.
The only remaining AI contestant that I like now is Melinda. All the other ones are too mechanical and copy cat other singers.
PJ, Tampa, USA Florida
Sanjaya has a very promising career ahead of him. I admire him for competing so well with many great singers. I wish him the best of luck in his future!
Julie Amedio, Latham , New York
I absolutely love Sanjaya. I think he is interesting, talented
and very charming. His smile makes you love him instantly.
I love his interviews. I hope all the best for him and I will certainly by his CD whatever and whenever it is available.
Way to go Sanjaya. American Idol is not the same without you.
Karen, Wautoma, WI
Lets face it. This guy has no talent. This is one time Simon was right 110%
The only reason people say anything good about this guy is they feel sorry for him.
True facts are true facts so lets get back in the real world here.

I'm so glad to hear so many encouraging e-mails to Sanjaya. The media loved to rip into him and I could never understand why.....he always sounded good to me, has a smooth, soulful voice, great smile and sweet spirit. And what an entertainer!!! I really think America has embraced him and really cares about him. I don't know how Simon could look at this young man in the face and be so cruel to him.....heartless. But to Sanjaya's credit he took it with kindness and dignity....he's genuine. I know he wants to go to college and further his singing career......he's in my prayers. J Lo and Mark Anthony want to adopt him........who doesn't?????? God bless and keep you, Sanjaya!
kathy smith, Pt Jeff Sta, New York
I agree with all the above posts. I too, am a mature woman- over 50- and I adore Sanjaya. He makes me smile when I see him. That is his gift. I agree with some vocal exercises and learning to breathe and sing from the diaphram, he can only improve. He has a great career ahead of him. He needs to not lose his winsome appeal, however.
teri, Redondo Beach, CA
Sanjaya! Sanjaya!
Oh why?
Oh Why?
uh
I've loved you from that very first day.
Your big sister-she wouldn't win.
No way!
It was you all along
who was headed to Idol
I'd already guessed
your popularity would be tidal.
Flat quite often
And you couldn't hold a note
Which led many to question
Why you always got the vote.
JLo knew why
Tony Bennett did too
But it was Diana Ross
who best summed up you.
"Sanjaya is Love"
She said so succinctly.
That's why you were followed devoutly.
You have that freaky smile
That never leaves your face
Simon chides and you're still full of grace.
We'll miss you on Idol.
You know that it's true.
But you're Sanjaya Malakar
there's no way that you're through!
Lori Houlihan, Lexinton, KY
He was an awful singer.
And his fame has gone to his head (which will give him less options for his hair as his head will be too big)
Jim, Canada,
Great kid buy his singing was horrendous - he shouldn't have made it as far as he did.
PD, Hamilton, Canada
Sanjaya is an angel! I am so disappointed also in how he was treated on AI. Even Paula seemed to join the negative bandwagon. But the treatment he got from Simon was unforgiveable. They knew he was shy, & instead of inspiring him to shine & give it his all, they brutally attacked him w/ anything they could find fault with. How immature is that? Everyone needs to re-look at his audition (before all the put-downs) & remember what all the judges said then. They were absolutely positive that they found a kid who could REALLY SING! They were like "oh yeah, 100%, welcome to Hollywood" then. Why did they become so hostile? Everyone who is still left in the competition has their pitchy moments &off key notes. But do they butcher them in the same way they did Sanjaya? No! Sanjaya, just remember, the majority of America speaks much louder than Simon, Paula or Randy or any of the hateful critics you unfortunately had to come to know. Good luck kiddo! And yes, you can sing!!!!!!!
Terri, Manhattan, KS
I loved reading the comments here. I thought I was one of the very few who thought, Sanjaya was great.
Yes... this 16 1/2 yr old is great. For his poise charm, and talent.
In the beginning, I didn't care for him..with his effiminate ways and his hoola hoops thing. What was that? :)
But then his true self came out...and I loved his version of Bathwater and Beseme Mucho!
At the end of the day...America comes through... and the comments here shows that.
Loved reading every piece of it. This is more than about Sanjaya. Its really about us Americans and what we value. Good show!
Manny, Flower Mound, TX
Sanjaya rocks!!
julie, fremont, ca
We love Sanjaya! I'm a Mom for Malakar! I have downloaded all his studio cuts and love Bathwater the best. It gets me going in the morning! I love Ain't No
Mountain High Enough too, but Besame Mucho makes you melt!
Guess What? REGIS loves him too!
He even cracked up DAVID LETTERMAN!
Go Sanjaya Go!
Rhonda C., Santa Rosa Beach, FL
I love Sanjaya!!! American Idol just isn't the same without him... I will continue to follow his career and will most certainly purchase ANY product, musical or otherwise in support of this very endearing young man. Go Sanjaya, go!
Marlene O'Connell, Lake Oswego , Oregon
We say " BYE YA SANJAYA"!! This is about a singing competition, and Sanjaya can not sing!
Carries, Supobs, EU/NL
Sanjaya is multi-talented. We all know the celebrities who are great at re-inventing themselves make a lasting impression. People keep saying "Sanjaya can't sing." That's not true, he can sing. He's young and will learn how to better project his voice and find the songs that suit him best. I'll continue to support his endeavor to achieve his dreams.
Kim, Temecula, California
He is only 17 and came so far with all negative words on him. I am proud of him, stand tall Sanjaya....
Corine, San Francisco, USA
I've watched AI for 3 seasons now and no one person until Sanjaya has had me sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see his next performance or interview.
I admire him for being strong enough to step out of the "norm" box... especially on the positive side!
How any one of us "CRITICS" could muster the courage to stand on that stage, in front of that many people and deliver your talent to be tromped on time after time! And did Sanjaya keep that Smile? Yeah! Amazing!
I can't imagine any 17 year old being able to stand solid against such criticism as Sanjaya received on the show and off.
If he keeps on this path he's on and keeps his values and his positive attitude...ain't no telling how far he'll go and I'll be rootin' for him all the way... I'd be proud to call him my own...
Lynn, Vicksburg, Mississippi
Two things. One, the guy had a way better sense of rhythm than almost anybody else on the show - he should've been playing an instrument, not singing. Not a bad musician, necessarily. Two, the guy grasped that surviving on the show was far more about entertainment and likeability than pure vocal elan. He's earned his fame. As much as I hate to admit it.
Kyle, Chicago,
I think it's awesome that Sanjaya still has his shine!!! He does have a beautiful voice, and with a little more practice he can make a hit single. He's totally adorable, and sweet too. Luuuuuv that smile!!! He's had to put up with a lot of undeserved hate, and stil manages to stay calm, cool, and collected. Also charismatic and cuuuuute!! I hope he's very happy, he deserves to be.
Constance, Oklahma city,
Wow! Happily surprised to read so many positive comments on Sanjaya. Clearly, the young man has presence, grace & musicality. While Melinda Doolittle has always been my chosen-one, I also supported Sanjaya with hundreds of calls, literally. After being subjected to unfair-badgering from the judges & the media - I felt protective of Sanjaya; As if someone had abused my little brother! Diana Ross was the first mentor to sing Sanjaya's praises - in direct oppositon to the AI judges. Tony Bennett & Jennifer Lopez also gave glowing/truthful assessments of him. ...Now that's a truly a supreme trio of judges.
artistonfire, New York, NY
Sanjaya rocks and i cant wait for him to put out a cd im going to buy it the first day it comes out.!!! I LOVE SANJAYA!!!! even though he got voted off (i think it was rigged) HE STILL HE THE BEST!!
<!Erin!>
Erin, blythewood, sc
Kayla St Petersburg, I concur, esp with "through the years I don't remember any other contestant consistently being attacked so brutally." It is such a [sad] curiosity to me. WHAT IS IT that provoked such extreme negativity? There have been worse contestants in the past who made it far or even farther, but the attacks weren't so personal. Simon's comments didn't seem any worse than usual. Racism crops up, but that's not the whole story, either. Is it a combo of the media just going too far and then comments boards going that much farther? I'd be interested in others' theories. Like you, I've noticed the hatred continues on the air, although boards seem to have calmed down and the theme is that we miss him and wish him well. This morning a radio station commented on People mag items (Sanjaya's comfort with women, being voted 1 of most beautiful), which resulted in a conclusion that he "must be gay." I don't get it. Simon's comment to Jack Black that Sanjaya was worse was out of bounds.
Virginia, Arlington,
I'm kind of glad that he is off that stupid show because now we can see him on something almost every day. Plus I don't have to waste my time watching Idol. The only reason I watched this year was to see Sanjaya!
Sanjaya is the real winner of AI 2007
Lauren, Boston, MA
This kid is awesome. I at first didnt like that he was still around but he soon grew on me and I became a fan. His fantastic attitude and great smile. Many older adults could learn a thing or two from this guy. Im willing to bet he will go far. I can name a slew of millionaire singers that have sold millions of records around the world that dont come close to this kids singing. Can any one say Bob Dylan? Let the critics criticize they are wrong more than they are right and usually have nothing of success on their resume. Go Sanjaya
Miami Fl
Ruben, miami, Fl
I never knew what American Idol was all about since I have no TV, but thanks to YouTube I happen to stumble a controversial clip about this beautiful 17 yr old Sanjaya and since then I can't get enough of him. Not the best of the crop they say but to me he embodies my kind of hero. A fresh air, a smile that cross many miles and ocean. I can only wish there are more Sanjaya in the world then the world would be less chaos than we are now.
Bernadette, Reno, NV
I find it rather pathetic that people can be so rude regarding Sanjaya. I suppose you are the people who voted in the ever "talented" Tayler HIcks or the even more "talented" Ruben Studder. Where are THOSE American Idols now??? I haven't seen or hear anything about Hicks in months.
Personally I don't think it really matters if you are the last man on stage. History has proven the real singers are the ones who are now on the top 10 chart.
You don't have to like him, but you need not be so harsh on him. He is 17 and has made a far bigger impact than any other idol to date. Don't buy his album. Don't support his career path. Let him bask in the limelight as he deserves to. Go back and put on your favorite CD and put your money in the pockets of your personal favorites.
He is a role model to my students, and I hope he stays true to his beliefs. How many of you would be able to stand tall in spite of the all the negative media comments.I will miss you Sanjaya!
Chris, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
I'm glad your off AI. No talent. Othere more talented singers should have been there.
The joke to vote for the worst really helped propel your fame, NOT your singing.
SB, Tucson,
Who is she?
Jose, Valencia,
I love Sanjaya. I thought his performance on Besame Mucho was electrifying. Sometimes when he sings his voice quavers or he is off key a bit, but he sings with so much feeling. Many people can sing on pitch but they put me to sleep. Sanjaya's passion for the music keeps my interest, and I find myself humming the songs he sings for days afterwards. He is never boring. I think if he weren't singing on TV under such tremendous pressure, he could sing perfectly. I bet he will make wonderful albums that will sell. I can't wait to see what will happen next in his life and his career. I wish him well and pray for him every day.
Susan M Khaury, Saint Michael, USA, Minnesota
I guess most of us need to be told what we should like......
So we just trust Simon to think for us along with the many other execs in the biz who feed us junk.
I loved Sanjayas VOICE the first time I heard it.
Not his hair!
Not his smile!
HIS VOICE!
I've been in college as a voice major on scholarship so I figured I could trust my opinion to choose what I like.
But now the media has convinced me most of us are too stupid to trust our own opinions. We need to be spoon fed who we should like.
Thank God we have a fair an unbiased media to tell us how rotten this kid is vocally, personally and physically. Thank God the media can set us straight how stupid we were to like him.
I would buy Sanjayas CD today if I could! Thats how STUPID I AM!!
How 'bout the media letting us decide who we like without trying to sway us??
You can have Melinda or Jordin.......because I'm choosing the best for my ears. I'm choosing a better Universe!
Travis, Missoula, MT
Wow! It is so nice to hear others say great things about him.I never watched AI before,I guess I felt I was too mature and sophisticated for that.I caught Sanjaya and stayed to watch...and watch...and watch...UNTIL he was voted off.I love his voice!I'm not really into screaming and holding notes forever at the end of a song.
I always look for passion and soul in the music. That is what I got with his music. With the right tutelage(J.LO. maybe),he could have a fine carreer. The fact that he is also aa wonderful role model for people of ALL ages, well,.that is what America needs right now.
As Diana Ross said , "Sanjaya is love".
Let's spread it around.
Keep working and practicing ,Sanjaya, and follow your heart.
Look for a good mentor who cares about you and continue your education.I bought your mp3's, will buy all your music.
Good luck and God bless!!
Vicki rigsby, york, S.C.
I think Sanjaya is an excellent performer and was not BAD SIMON!!! he was a unique singer which is why everyone love him along with the Hairdos. once he realeases CD it will Go platnium cause everyone will love him. he rocks and i love him and more the n half my school aslso does. i know for one Sanjaya will have a brigth future a-head of him. when he gets older and mroe wiser he will be an even better singet the he already is now so HA
julia, Youngstown, USA.Ohio
Nice kid, can't sing... American TV viewers foolishly eliminated other talented singers as a collossal joke on us all. I guess he should make the most of his 15+ minutes. Don't count on me to support him if his "modeling" or "acting" is as bad as his singing. Wonder what his target audience would be? Logo cable channel might want him. ha ha ha
plm, NYC, NY
I think Sanjaya is an awesome role model to our youth as well as adults. The way he has been able to stay positive in light of all of the critisism he has taken and continues to take. Sanjsya did not put himself on American Idol, the judges did, and America kept him there. He is only seventeen years old, and I am appaled at the way three adults humilitated him week after week. I have seen Sanjaya give a few interviews since he was let go, he has always been humble, well spoken and nothing but complimentary of the show and the judges. I think adults have alot to learn from him. I think the show was very boring without him last night, he was one of the few real entertainers this season. I have not been a teenager for a few decades.
Cathy, Avon, Indiana
Sanjaya was a horrible singer, but has a great look as a model. I hope he has great luck in the modeling industry but hope he stays away from singing and acting (at least until he gets older and stops sounding like Michael Jackson).
India, CINCINNATI, OH
Sanjaya will continue to rise and shine. He is so humble and that makes him unique.Stay focused and just be yourself as always.God bless you.
Joy, Scotland, UK
I totally agree with "Another Fan of the Kid"!!! His voice did not stand out among the others, but he did sing in tune!! and week by week I was falling for him too.
He had a charm and self confidence I loved, and that smile and his eyes following the camera was so cute! I , too, am certain he will be making it in show business somehow
in some field and I am looking forward to seeing much more of him!! With that confidence and not letting others put him down nor at same time getting angry about them, that kind of person HAS TO MAKE IT!! Much less talented nor personable people have made it in show business who could disappear and wouldnt be noticed.
I would miss Sanjaya!!! and I'm not a tween either, I'm 62 yrs. old.
summerdragon, Somer,
Malakar is bad taste, it says a lot about the american public. Sorry but people like untallented performers so they can relate to them and believe they also have a shot in the show biz
ann, orlando,
I won't bother watching american idol now that is is sanjayaless. I look forward to it earlier wondering what Sanjaya was going to sing and what hairdo he would come up with. Its boring now, all the rest of the singers are just wax figures.
Vilma, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada
Unknown to many, Sanjaya sang with the renowned African-American Pastor Patrinell "Pat" Wright's Total Experience Gospel Choir or Seattle. I heard him quoted in a sermon at church on Sunday that dealt with the Christian's "Easter Season" response to hostility, rejection and ridicule. Sanjaya had told Jay Leno, "I take whatever positive I can find and let go of and leave behind all the negative."
Not only does he have more charisma than most - he had more maturity.
Certainly more than I had at 17! I find it hard to let go of negativity even in old age!
Good for him, too, that he met Simon Cowell at a young age. He'll have to live a long time to meet someone with a bigger ego and a colder heart than that dude! :-)

He is going to continue to escalate, He will get vocal training from the best in the world and go on to be a true super star. I just love Sanjaya I can't get enough of his music and entertainment. He's the best I have heard in years. He moves me in very emotional ways.
Mark, Needham, MA
Last night's show should have been called "The SANJAYA MALAKAR SHOW featuring idol gives back.
Wow--and these please to Sanjaya's voters--do you think they are finally GETTING IT???
Sanjaya is the hottest thing to come along in a long while.
Puck up a People Magazine this week (comes out friday?) and he is among the 50 "Most Beautiful for 2007. His votes online at the ABC website for "Most Beautiful beat out George Clooney, Brad Pitt--by a large margin.
He is number 11 right now on TIME's 100 Most Influential for 2007.
I think Slimon was like 110th????
Anyway, it is now Sanjaya's Universe.
The naysayers better get used to it.
Rhonda, Haines City, Florida
Sanjaya you are the sweetest person i have ever seen...I really love you... I wish You the very best... Go after your dream and make it big... prove the judges wrong especially Simon..You don't have to win AI to be a star, you are already a star, and you are only going to shine brighter...Good Luck Sajaya, I love you so very much....
sherry, toronto, Canada
He was awful, how he kept going is beyond me. We get some bad singers in the X factor but he has got to be the worst. He took himself seriously and unfortunatly believes the hype. He will only crash and burn
Vanessa, Luton, England
I really love you sanjaya!!!!!
I know they cheated on your votes cause i know all of us Indian voted for ya.
I know you will be great because you are smart and sexy!!!!!
love your biggest fan

He was not missing talent - or even charisma (which, by the way, can also be enhanced and developed). What Sanjaya was missing was quality vocal coaching. He wanted to do the right thing - he just did not have anyone (obviously) showing him how to do it (i.e, how to expand the power of his voice and 'let go' more into his performances). One hopes that at this point, he will have access to that much needed coaching and vocal development. And yes, people (adults included) liked him because he showed grace and guts.

I agree. An exceptional talent, the likes I have not seen since the Beatles. He will definitely be the most successful performer to emerge from Idol.

Sanjaya is a pop culture phenomenon that will continue for the foreseeable future. He brings all the ingredients that make one possible - likability, charm, charisma, talent, righteous rebelliousness, rabid fan following and yes even an interesting life story. This pot will continue to simmer if not boil.

American Idol is boring without Sanjaya. The kid has got a smile that reaches his heart. I liked his singing. I can name so many singers including Madonna and Britney Spears who dont have great voices (by American Idol standards) but are solid entertainers selling millions of albums. I like Jordin Sparks too... lovely smile...
But Sanjaya was my choice for American Idol. I am sure he did not get the least number of votes that night.
Go Sanjaya... I will buy your first CD. I will watch you first movie... and I am not a tween...

i think you guys misspelled Simon's last name in this. it's Cowell not Powell

Malakar is captivating. Every week on the show, I liked him more. Something sincere & honest came across. Everyone else seemed to be "imitating" someone else. I saw a Gladys Knight impersonator when I saw Melinda, a Sting impersonator when I saw Blake, a Justin Timberlake impersonator when I saw Chris R. Malakar was unpredictable. Who has the guts to wear a ponkhawk & stare you down via the camera? The kid is a born entertainer. He's got the X FACTOR. It will be fun watching him mature/develop his talent.
Another Fan of the Kid, Galveston, TX
Sanjaya's star will continue to rise and he will be an established international star for his lifetime. Unlike so many others. In fact, I predict he becomes the most successful post-Idol artist in history.

i think that he is so goergous and like omg i love him.....haha im a blonde...hehe
liza, fairfield,
I think Simon Cowell said it well when he called Sanjaya "The smartest contestant we've ever had on the show." After all, American Idol is less a singing contest than a popularity contest, and Sanjaya has proven that you don't have to be much of a singer to take advantage of the exposure AI offers.
Ol, Dallas, Texas
I think Sanjaya is very sexy and talented. His eyes and smile glow with light, warmth and heart. He's got a beautiful voice that will only get stronger with experience and training (I absolutely LOVED his version of "Besame Mucho" -- great pronunciation in Spanish too)!!. He's got rhythm in his moves and a fun, charismatic presence that is somehow humble at the same time. What a charmer!
I admire the talents of all the contestants left on American Idol now but Sanjaya's the one I'm most interested in seeing more of in the future. I can't wait to see and hear his next moves. I hope it won't be just modeling -- what a waste of talent that would be. Hope he continues singing and why not,it'd be fun to see him in a movie too (the right one)!
Beth , Fairfield,
I am probably older than most on this thread. Sanjaya's voice reminds me of Fred Astaire's. He has more charisma in his little finger than the rest do, combined. I watch for whatever is in his future. "Disney" you better sign him up fast or he will be too expensive.

Could anyone - caucasian or other - be expected to win a national talent competition with wide spread vicious and cruel statements repeatedly being aired, written, and printed as too new stories on every media format throughout America every single day - gathering widespread momentum as more media and individuals jumped on the bandwagon including the usually tasteful, CNN Showbiz Tonight.
The fact Sanjaya continued to withstand the month long abuse from the media, the show, and America is truly amazing!!! And he is only 17 years old.
Can you think of anyone in the history of America who has come under the daily hateful scrutiny of this country like Sanjaya and ever survived?
Name anybody - any star - ever.
I cannot think of any other idol candidate who has had to endure this ongoing cruel treatment week after week in the 4 years I have been a viewer. This was not a fair competition.
I even think discrimination might have been the motivation.
Caryl, Canada,
I voted for Sanjaya several times everyweek. And I can honestly say that this kid deserved to be on the show. I think that the judges, especially Simon were very rude to him. But I admire Sanjaya greatly because despite all their comments he never once retaliated. He always had a smile and gave his untimate best each week.
Afreen, College Station, Texas
I never watched American Idol before Sanjaya came along. One day I was flipping the channels on the television, and I caught a glimpse of Sanjaya and I thought "who is that"??? and I had to watch American Idol each week after that. Now that Sanjaya is voted off, I probably won't watch the show again. I think he is so HOT, and it's not just his hair .... it's his perfect complexion and smile too. Admittedly, he wasn't the best singer on the show, but he was definitely the most exciting to watch. He can sing as good as most of the entertainers that appear on MTV these days. I hope he gets his own show and makes his own music videos. I'm also much older than 11.
Dena, Calgary, Canada
They said Elvis couldn't sing. They laughed at Liberace. Those entertainers laughed all the way to the bank. I love Sanjaya. He has raw talent. I believe you will see a lot of him in the future. He behaved very bravely, with excellent grace under fire. I believe the more he was criticized, the more his star rose. At the beginning, his inexperience crippled him somewhat, but as time went on, his voice became fuller. He reminds me of Stevie Wonder. I love this guy and wish him the VERY best!!!! And he does have an excellent voice. He just needs to learn to really BELT IT OUT!!! Sanjaya, I LOVE YOU!!! Don't ever change your wonderful unassuming personality. You are the GREATEST. You may have been kicked off Idol, but YOU ARE STILL A STAR!!!
Dianne, Woodinville, WA
The quality of the top 10 participants in the current season is hardly noteworthy (Jordin being the exception) ... Considering this, viewers had adopted this 17 year old shy, every-smiling sensation as their motif for the show. Atleast the season has a name that can be discussed in Sanjaya. Surely enough, when this season is over, viewers will remember Sanjaya more than any other participant - for the right reasons or otherwise. Way to go Sanjaya ....
Kewl JJ, Dubai, UAE
HI Young fellow, you are adorable.
you should sing more of those spanish, ethnic , Europen songs-- salsa of music -that would suit your voice.
get some voice training,
we miss seeing you in idol.

Sanjaya, you are adorable,
Try singing more of those spanish, ethnic , mutilanguage songs, your voice fits the soft music.
get a voice assessment and training, music college would be great,
goodluck we miss you. We had fun watching you even my 75 yr old MOM

As many people who watch Idol, most people have never seen the show. Sanjaya is more famous than Simon, Ryan, Paula and Randy will ever be (I still don't have a clue who Randy is and what he does). There is no doubt Sanjaya is already an American Idol and has walked away the big winner.
Todd Hunter, Phoenix, AZ
Considering several "singers" who went on to win on Idol, the "Best" don't aways win... far from it. Sanjaya made his mark. He had style and enthusiams and likeability and was always interesting. I wish him the very best.
Fred Causey, Vienna, GA
Sanjaya is the worst thing that ever happened to American Idol. It's a singing competition!!! No one cares how cute he is if he can't sing!!! AND HE CAN'T!!! Our household quit watching until he was voted off. I felt sorry for the judges. It was a run away train and there was nothing they could do about it. All I can say is THANK HEAVENS HE IS GONE!!!!!!!!
Kelly, Cedar Rapids, IA
I do not care to watch AI anymore - what is there left?
Sanjaya stayed for weeks, because people liked him - like me. We voted to keep him on the show - shame on all the critics and disrespecting our choice! He is fantastic, a real entertainer - NOT BORINGGGGGG!
I could not wait to see the next show to see him on stage and hear him sing!
Above all that - he is a NICE PERSON!
Milena, Redondo Beach, CA
Sanjaya is really someting to talk about. He restores faith in the American dream. He is so likable and an escape from the sad realities that surround us everyday. He may not be the best singer but a lot of famous singer can not sing. I am sure with today technology someone can make him a great singer, if that is what he wants. Right now we need to talk about Sanjaya not the war, presidency battle, aids in Africa, the dismissal of Imus, and so forth. Take a break for this feel good story that is what I am talking about..
E.M.H. Fulton, Pittsburgh, PA.
Sanajaya is a very charming young man and Im pretty sure that he is going to be more famous than he is now. He patiently accept critisism, and keep smiling becuse he knows where its gonna lead into. You have my support Sanjaya!
Dena Burgess, yorktown, va
He is going to continue to escalate, He will get vocal training from the best in the world and go on to be a true super star. I just love Sanjaya I can't get enough of his music and entertainment. He's the best I have heard in years. He moves me in very emotional ways.
Mark, Boston, MA
Sanjaya is this years star of American Idol, thats the truth no matter how you look at it. It will not be long before you hear at an event " Sanjaya has left the building".
Bob, east stroudsburg, USA / Pennsylvania
Sanjaya is a great performer and his pleasant and respectable nature was his charms that drew the audience on top of his singing talents. I really miss seeing him on AI and have to admit the show is not the same with him voted off. He so reminds me of my youngest brother and did I mention look alike..I really wish Sanjaya the best in life and hope he fulfills his ambitions..

Hi-I'm a 56 years young woman and think Sanjaya is adorable..I am a singer my self and enjoyed hearing him sing...I think Simon has too narrow a vision of what is "good" singing
Frankie Obrien, ft lauderdale, florida
American Idol is boring everyone to tears! Sanjaya kept us awake & talking! Who cares if he wasn't Pavarotti? Most entertainers survive on CHARISMA not talent! The remaining contestants are as interesting as melba toast!
No offense to William Shatner, but he's a PERFECT example of someone who's had a very successful career in show business. His acting skills were way below Shakespearean, but he helped to make STAR TREK a phenomenon that will outlive us all! All I can say is.........Scottie, Beam me up to the UNIVERSE OF SANJAYA -- WARP SPEED!!!!
Mary Saint, Houston, Texas
I think Sanjaya has a lot of charisma at 17 and he will go far in the entertainment field. He just needs more training - just watch and see. He will get an offer real soon.
Renee, Griffith, IN
i think sanjaya has a good chance to be a sucessful entertainer he has a good voice with a little choaching he could be better remember he,s only 17 and you know they will hide any bad vocals with what they could do in the studio so please he,s young good looking no offense but the other idol,s don,t have the whole package sanjaya have i bet he sell more records than any idol winner this year and last .
gregory griffith, east orange, new jersey
I agree. Music is about 1. Correct Pitch, 2. Melody, 3. Ryththm. Sanjaya's songs I have heard over and over. He may not be as fun to hear in each an every song. But its hard to find something violating the above points. His rendition of Besame much is so far the best and I include all greats such as Andrea Bocelli, Pavratti, and woa Beatles. The Beatles rendition is butchery as best described. By the way I wonder why people do not criticize Hey Jude of Paul Mc Cartney. That is sung horribly! and broken! Simon Colwell needs to rrealize Music is about kindness and empathy and all gentle things of life.
Subhas, Indiana, US
I am very sad about the treatment this young man received on American Idol. After watching the show through the years I don't remember any other contestant consistently being attacked so brutally. I have great admiration for Sanjaya's self discipline, loyalty and persistence in the face of adversity. His powers of forgiveness and affection make him a glowing role model for today not only or youth but adults too. I bought all of his downloads (and will buy more when available)to which I listen and watch frequently. I have a minor in music and determined entertainment for a college of 10,000+. I'm not tone deaf. Interestingly the rude remarks continue with the statement aired today that the show was wonderful now with the remaining 5..a love fest. P.S. I heard all those pitchy notes and high ending screeches last night. I'm more interested in finding out where Sanjaya is Breakin Out ! P.S.S. I'm not age 10 and I'm over 40.
Kayla Rozwalka, Saint Petersburg, Fl.
Sanjaya is a breath of fresh air. Yes, he's young and got a lot to learn. At least he's got a goal - which you cannot say about so many of our youth today. He is a crooner and with some guidance and training he could fit into the catagory of Frank Sinatra, etc. No, he was not my favorite for American Idol. Sanjaya has taken the criticisms very well, and that shows strength and character. He would make a wonderful model and maybe even an actor - give him time. I for one appreciate Sanjaya as a caring, obviously loving, respectful , young person. We need more with those sentiments. I wish him much luck in his future.
Annaha FeatherHill, Felton, California
I beleive he has good vocals perhaps not musically entertaining but can hold a lyric. Is is very down to earth. I voted for him every week.

I really miss seeing Sanjaya on ai ..and thus have no interest in continuing to watch the show until the finale when he returns. I'm very happy to see him on the talk shows and hearing that he's doing well and especially want to thank Jay Leno for being very courteous and gracious with Sanjaya. THANK YOU JAY! Whatever Sanjaya decides to do with his life, he will be successful and the Fanjayas will be here to support him! Sanjaya is a wonderful person with a lot of class and kindness. I hope everyone has a chance to see the true Sanjaya.
Nancy Estrada, Whittier, CA
Ihope Sanjaya will continue sing - he is an entertainer.
If care only about vocal I can get that from my church!
Sam Silva, New York, NY
It is good that Sanjaya is getting the due recognition now, even though he got ousted from the American Idol contest. There was such a big fuss all over USA as to why he was not ousted much earlier, all because he is neither white, nor an African-American! He is an Indian-American by birth, but an American in all aspects otherwise. He was raised and taught in USA and has a huge following among the younger generation in USA today, which does not support the deep rooted racial attitudes of many of the baby-boomers. Wake-up Americans and smell the coffee. As a great nation, USA must accept all Americans equally, whether Chinese-American, Japanese-American, Indian-American or African-American, etc. If the issue is as to who were the original occupants of this land, then the credit goes to the native Indians. All other among us have come here at the most a few generations back, whether it is 2 or 4 or 10. If one acquires USA citizenship, then he or she is A CITIZEN of USA!
Navnit, Seymour, CT
I like Sanjaya. He is very, very good show-boy and very nice. Eksotic- and cute boy.
Pispa Poika, Tampere, Finland
1) Teenage girls were NOT "screaming and sobbing". There was one litt egirl in the audience the camera kept panning to who was crying. When asked later about it she said she was so excited to be in the audience that she was crying. Her parents said she cried during EVERY contestants segments. It had NOTHING to do with Sanjaya.
2) How exactly has Sanjaya's fame "escalated" since being voted off? No one remembers him other than as a grieving annoyance.
3) It's Simon Cowell and not "Simon Powell". He bears no relation to the 65th United States Secretary of State.
Lionel, Sugar Land, TX
I didn't like your hairdo. I agree with Simon, that you are a horrible singer. He sounds like a girl. No hard feelings
Jamie Goldberg, Astoria, Queens, N.Y.
Wonderful young man, with spectacular talent and tons of charisma.
Why would anyone not love him?
