A 17-year-old from Arizona yesterday became the youngest ever winner of American Idol, after viewers cast a record 74 million votes.
Jordin Sparks beat Blake Lewis, 25, to the top spot on the US’s most watched television show after the singer captured the hearts of viewers with her bubbly personality and big voice.
The two finalists embraced after host Ryan Seacrest announced the winner of the sixth season of the contest, with Sparks, dressed in a long, flowing gold gown, having difficulty catching her breath.
“Thank you so much for everything -- Mom and Dad, I love you!” said the emotional teenager, who along with the American Idol title will receive a recording contract.
Backstage, Sparks could barely contain her excitement at joining the ranks of previous“Idol” winners.
“It just turned out pretty cool, I guess,” she said, giggling.
Ms Sparks, who is from Glendale, Arizona, and is the daughter of a former National Football League player, Phillippi Sparks, started singing as a toddler and auditioned for American Idol as soon as she could after becoming eligible at the age of 16.
After the show singer Smokey Robinson said: “She sings so good it’s hard to believe that she’s 17. To sing like that you would have to have lived for a long time.”
Heading into the competition’s final week, many thought the show’s top title was up for grabs, with the British judge, Simon Cowell, saying viewers would have to decide between the better singer, Sparks, and the better entertainer, Lewis.
The show, which has grown from a cheesy summer talent competition into a cultural phenomenon that draws about 30 million viewers twice a week, is a spin off from the British Pop Idol.
In its first five seasons the show has produced a list of successful stars from both its winners and losers.
Kelly Clarkson was a Grammy winner, winner Carrie Underwood became a Country Music Award winner and Jennifer Hudson, who failed to make the finale in 2004, won an Oscar and Golden Globe earlier this year for her performance in the movie Dreamgirls.
In addition to transforming nobodies into stars, the programme has become a coveted forum for established artists to be seen.
The star-studded event included performances by Gwen Stefani, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Green Day. Prince, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder and Mary J. Blige have also appeared on the show.
About 100,000 people auditioned for this year’s show, which puts contestants through auditions and performances that showcase musical genres ranging from country to hard rock.
The programme, on News Corp’s Fox network, first ran in the summer of 2002.
There are three judges, the music producer Randy Jackson, the former pop star Paula Abdul and Cowell. They have contracts for another two seasons.
Revenue from recordings by performers associated with the Idol franchise has exceeded $100 million.
The show is broadcast live or tape-delayed to more than 100 nations outside the United States, including Pakistan, Israel, United Arab Emirates, China, Australia and South Africa.

Jordin deserved to win, however I thought Blake was also very talented and unique in his performances, however there were two stars for me who should have made the final- Antonella Barba and Lakisha. They would have been better finalists. Melinda was dull, dull, dull and would not have had a hope in todays competetive music industry. Good Luck Jordin!
Mr. S. King, London,
My God for a minute I thought the teenyboppers of the US would push Blake through!! Thank heavens it did not happen. I congatulate Jordan. I tipped her from the early stages because she had all the trappings of a star only 17...good looks character and a reasonable voice..and yes a consistent performer. However I will never forgive the shabby way Melinda was treated...yes she was a little overweight a little sweet but there is absolutely no question...she was by far the best singer and her exit made a mockery of the essence of this competition. Even Simon Cowell did not believe she was out when the final two were selected. How Blake got through with his pitchy weak voice beggars belief. I cannot believe the US voters were watching the same performances as me.I predict a great career for Melinda and a successful but brief one for Jordan. Blake will get lost in the wash. How you prevent such a travesty of justice like Melinda' s exit happening again, I cannot say but Idol lives on!!
Ashley Easter, London , United Kingdom
i will not be watching american idol next year because i dont think all vote were counted . i did like jordan but melinda doolittle was pro. tell me what happen to all the votes. melinda got cheated.blake did not know all his word
thank you, hampton, va
The outcome of American Idol - satisfactory but not correct. The best singer by far (if it really is to be classed as a singing competition) was Melinda. Jordan is talented enough to be accepted as the winner - but Blake, in second
place? Sorry, none of the men were up to it this time round.
For my money, the order is 1st: Melinda, and 2nd: Jordan and Lakisha, in a tie. Hope to be seeing and hearing from all three of them in the future.

Who's Cat Deeley? I've never heard of her!

Won not one; please learn to use the correct word.
Gareth, Verwood, UK
How the hell could Jordin have won with Lakisha and Melinda in the equation? And Lewis No.2???
Kong Kek Kuat, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Agreed on Cat Deeley. There was no point to her involvement in what was already a winning formula. I like her as a presenter, but Ryan Seacrest was and is enough. Go back to basics for the UK cpverage next year please - and let Cat do something worthy - but not this!
Steve, Glasgow, Scotland
Interesting that there seems to be some preoccupation with Cat Deeley from the ladies here. I wonder why!
Speaking from a male perspective, she can spend as much time as she likes on my screen. She's fabulous!
Mark, London,
I was upset when Melinda was voted off but I wasn't suprised that Jordin won. She is much more accomplished as a singer. It will be interesting to see how successful the finalists are. To sum up this series, I think the final line up lacked the depth of some of the previous contests. Behind the scenes they hould really get rid of Cat Deeley. All that hair, teeth and false empathy. She used to be a solid presenter who's relative sincerity would shine through. What happened to her? She always seemed to be trying too hard. And who were the strange guests? If you tuned in half way through after the intro's and captions you wouldn't have a clue. As for the judges, Randy was more focused with his comments and didn't sit on the fence. Paula on the other hand was all over the place with hers, constantly falling over herself to say something positive when some performances were clearly poor. Simon was of course Simon. No change there and no need for any!
LA, London, UK
I totally agree with MJ, Long Island. Bands would be a great show!!! So come on all you sponsors for music, lets get some more shows on tv and promote more Music!!! Can bet you the tv ratings will shoot up high....... Wouldn't mind seeing some music talent shows for the older generations........... good on the old fellow who had a go at american idol audition, even though he knew he wasnt eiligible, he still had a good voice!!! And yes, even some talent quests for the youngsters would prove beneficial for all whom love Music!!!
Good Luck to all whom enter the next music contest of your choice!!!

BEN DOVER - before lecturing anybody on spelling, you should learn to spell yourself. The word "one" is incorrect - Jordin "won" the contest.
Grocky, Toronto, Canada
I'm so HAPPY for MISS JORDAN SPARKS if she wouldn't have won this would have been the last American Idol show for me.
Annette Ross, Houston, USA
We agree with most comments re Cat Deeley. She was fine in "Stars in their Eyes Kids" where she excelled. However she has been completely out of her depth with American Idol and should not be retained next time.
Mark & Dena, Winchester, UK
Who's Cat Deeley? I've never heard of her.
Grocky, Toronto, Canada
Cat Deeley.....aaargh! My hubby has to stick his fingers in his ears and hum loudly whenever she appears.....
suzy, bristol,
Thank God for common sense! I thought I was the only one who thought having Cat Deeley on AI was pure farce. Everytime I saw her I said out loud, 'what is the point of you?' And then we had to put up with her fake laughter - which in most cases was too over the top. She's a no no for this programme Mr Fuller, please, please, please, keep her away from the next one. Did you Mr Fuller, think that because the girls have some 'eye candy' in the shape of Ryan, that the boys should have some too? The show doesn't need two presenters.
A message for Simon Cowell, take the X Factor to the U.S. it needs a new kind of talent show. Thanx for letting me rant.
Lisa-Tiane Phillips, Bermondsey, London
Ben - 'Even though she one'? In a comment criticising someone else's spelling? Oh dear!
Tracy, Belfast,
Glad Jordin won, great voice. However, still not able to match Leona Lewis from X Factor and generally A.I. contestants were not as good as UK ones.
What's all this about Cat Deeley? Surely no-one watches for her extensive knowledge of pop? She was great on Stars In Their Eyes, she'll never be David Frost and the show is full of hype anyway. Only Simon seemed to have a sense of proportion about the whole thing.
Dave, Manchester, UK
I totally agree ..that Cat Daley is embarassing. Whenever she is interviewing a man she acts all girley and goes all pathetic ...and she asks everyone banal and stupid questions.
Please please someone....dont sign her for the next series...I have to turn the TV on mute when she comes on..it really has spoilt this series.
Robyne, Brighton, UK
Cat Deeley ruined watching this series in the UK - what was the point of having her on the show!
It was a joy to watch the show in the States for the past few weeks - Cat wasn't on it!
Lee, London,
I would have thrown a shoe at the TV if Blake won! I may be British but it does not mean i should support mediocrity. In my opinion, it was up for grabs as far as Jordin or Melinda were concerned. So, i am happy with the result and i look forward to watching the show tonight --- that is if that Cat Deeley woman does not ruin it for me!
Anne, Longstanton, UK
What has happened to Cat Deely? On CDUK she used to be a sweet, normal girl next door, but now she's just legs akimbo, brainless bimbo style. I also would Sky + this series and fast forward her.
Also, for next series, how about having it on prime time? it's much better than Pop Idol as the contestants can actually sing.
Vanessa, London, UK
Miss Doolittle , i will buy your 1st CD
Judith Sorensen, Johannesburg, South Africa
CRYSTAL use a freaking period and please learn to spell. Either way, I did not care who won. The losers on the show always make better records than the winners. Even though she one, the other guy will sell way more albums.
Ben Dover, Mianus,
I'd be interested to see what Jordin will look like one year from now, given $1M and the top fashion experts, choreographers, and song writers. With all that, even I would look great, and believe me, I'm no idol.
Jeff, Poughkeepsie, NY
Can you please make sure Cat Deeley is not back next season. It really put me off watching the show. They said it was to encourage uk viewers | no thank you all that gushiness and big grin. So false no more please
karen, nuneaton, warwickshire
I think Jordan deserved it. Gawd, this year's show SUCKED!
kdfhjgh, Chicago, Illinois
Who mentioned that name? who?! Pleaseee, do NOT get me started on Cat Deeley! Do NOT. I mean, who thunked the idea of getting her on the show?! I feel so angry that so much time was wasted on her blabbings when i could have been "busy" learning more about the singers. I found that this year, i ended up knowing little about the contestants. Cat Deeley is a very pretty lady and in that regard she is an excellent ambassador for the UK but please, there are other shows on which she can be put to better use. I echo the words of Wendy White of Berkshire.
Annie, Cambridge, UK
I think the voting process is flawed. I believe the best talent would shine if voters were to vote for the one that they believed should be voted off, rather than the current system of voting for your favorite. This would eliminate multiple votes for the cutest, sexiest, hunkiest, etc and would allow the true best singers to remain. This is after all a singing competition, not a popularity contest as it sometimes appears to be.
RL, Calgary, Canada
Go Jordin..Your great! So glad the pre teen girls didn't overpower the vote and let Blake win. He was not a world class singer and had no power in his voice nor feelings. A good entertainer, yes, but best in the competition, no....that would have been Melinda Doolittle. Good luck Jordin!
SheilaStuart, St. Paul, MN
Well Howard Stern was right when they annouced the winner weeks ago.
rjs, reston, virginia
Although I don't think Blake had any business being in the finals, Jordin was my choice from Day One. I think that something has to be changed on Idol, too many good singers get voted off early and some really bad singers make it to the end!! We'll be listening to Jordin Sparks for a long time!!
Jennifer, North White Plains, USA / NY
I believe Jordin deserved it. I almost quit watching it after Phil was voted off. It seems like everyone who really is good gets voted off and the ones who can JUST dance or whatever the case may be gets to stay. Like Sanjaya he SUCKED!!! And look at how many good ones he went up against and knocked them out of the running and now guess what? He's gone too. I really think she got it fair and square.
Leann, marion, ohio
Wendy, I used to love the pure escapism of AI but also stopped watching it for a while due to Cat Deeley's unbearably empty blatherings. I then had the brainwave of recording the programme and fast-forwarding it when she came on. Easy on the eye she may be, but she has about as much entertainment value/sincerity/etc. as a lump of decorative wood.
Sam, Berks, UK
If this was a singing competition, we wouldn't have had the 2 finalists, lol. Anyhow, I am not so sure it is vogue to be on the show as it is a fantastic PR vehicle to be seen by 30 million people. And as someone pointed out, it is not the winner who is most guaranteed the success, ie...Chris, Jennifer, Clay, etc. So only time will tell as to what this show will do for them.
Mike, Shaker Heights, Ohio
Jordin is great but Melinda deserved it more.
Era, Palatine, illinois
I'm saying the same words as others; they finally got it right! Jordin was the only true singer! After Taylor Hicks I almost didn't watch this show again. Why they gave him time up to the moment we were all waiting is a puzzle (one more song from him would have been too much). I actually voted for the first time and I'm proud of Jordin and everyone who finally said enough beat boxin!
Cindy, Santee, California
There should be a show consisting of rock bands/groups of musicans like the old "battle of the bands"...there's a lot of talent in this country unfortunately too many kids lose out b/c of lack of exposure...Give the groups a chance to perform for us.
MJ, Long Island, NY/USA
Can someone tell Mr Fuller that we don't need that assinine Cat Deeley for series 7!! I stopped watching because of her and have had to get all news of the show from the net.
No one that I've spoken to likes her and everyone I've spoken to says how she's ruined the whole series 7 for us. Saboteur!!!!
Wendy White, maidenhead, Berkshire
i think jordan was a great choice for american idol because she has a great voice that is very powerful just like jeniffer hudson and i really loved her and her family so i hope the new american idol does a great job now that she won an even theo the gay didnt win he still did hes thing an i love the way he beat box i wish them all the beast of luck on acheiving hes or her dreams because i no that i will and i hope that they do an ps jordan looked so cute i loved her dress i am 16 love u peace................
crystal lollis, chicago, IL
They finally got it right. Congrats to Jordin for winning and to Blake for making it this far . I'm over the fact that Melinda did not make the finals. She displayed her great singing ability with Be Be and Ce Ce on the show.
Jordin has a lot of potential and should do very well. I want to thank Simon and Randy for reminding the voting public that this was a singing contest. I think they\ voters finally listen after booting off some good singers, prematurely.
I feel all the women will do well and some of the men.
The final show was one of the best I've ever seen. It's now vogue to be seen or perform on American Idol..
Ed, Spring, Texas
He needs it! he got it!
Congratulations Brother
Biniam, Dire Dawa, Ethiopia
Thank God the best singer won! Blake has a talent, but there were quite a few contestants with better singing ability than his. Jordan is amazing and will be a star for years to come. Congratulations Jordan!!!!!!!!!!!
