The new, revamped Dr.Who series may well end after its 2008 season, it emerged today. The man credited for the reinvention of the show, Russell T. Davies, has been quoted as saying that he and his entire team would prefer to leave the show on a high, and are planning to hand in a joint resignation effective at the end of the next series.
Davies began his TV career in childrens’ programming before a stint on Coronation Street before helming the widely acclaimed Queer As Folk. His revival of Dr.Who has proven to be a critical and ratings success, rejuvenating the moribund Saturday evening ‘family drama’ slot and engendering a welter of imitations. Two Dr.Who spinoffs are also currently in production: The second series of the ‘young adult’ sci-fi drama Torchwood, which focuses on a group of paranormal investigators in Cardiff and The Sarah Jane Adventures, aimed at younger viewers and featuring Elisabeth Sladen as a former companion of the time-travelling adventurer, which is expected to air next year.

Contract negotiation time I guess...?
Cynic, Gallifrey,
The show isn't going to be cancelled - they'll just get new producers in as Doctor Who has many many times in the past. Its a much bigger show than just Russel T Davis or any individual. The BBC would be crazy to end their biggest ratings winner and cash cow - it'd be like ITV cancelling Coronation Street.
Bill, Manchester,
A tad arrogant, this dramatic multiple resignation idea. If RTD wanted to leave on a high, I think he may have left it too late. Some of the recent episodes have been rushed and paper-thin. Having comprehensively (and poorly) ripped-off Joss Whedon and his team of writers I guess they have nothing left to say... 'Overuse the Daleks much?', as Willow might say.
Mugatu, London,
To paraphrase the old American baseball poem, there's no joy in Whoville (aka: Glens Falls) tonight, the mighty Doctor has struck out. My heart is breaking.
Think I'll go home and cry into my wine cooler. :(
