A mobile phone salesman won the television show Britain’s Got Talent last night.
Paul Potts, 36, an amateur opera singer from Port Talbot, Glamorgan, won the £100,000 prize and the opportunity to sing at the Royal Variety Performance after a public vote. More than two million people cast their votes.
The tenor, who hid his singing talent from work colleagues at Carphone Warehouse, wooed judges on the ITV show from the first note of his audition piece, Puccini’s Nessun Dorma.
Piers Morgan, one of the three judges, told him after one of his auditions that he wanted to find someone who had an ordinary job but who also had an extraordinary talent. “You are that guy,” he told him.
The tenor, who was bullied at school, stopped singing four years ago after several misfortunes, including an operation to remove a benign tumour.
He said he first responded to classical music when he heard Tchaikovsky's Pathétique symphony (No 6).

Not since I first heard Luciano Pavarotti for the first time have I fell as thrilled. There is something about you, aside from your most beautiful passionate voice, that brought tears to my eyes and chills throughout my being. You are a very special person with a God-given talent. You deserve whatever goodness you receive from your special gift. I look foward to listening to you for years and years into the future.
Bev Begnal, Doral, USA, Florida
Congratulations you were absolutely brilliant, by far the best act in the final. You deserve everything coming to you, I haven't heard a voice like that for a long time.
I hope your coming back to the millenium centre cardiff, so those from Wales can see our new talent.

I watched the clip of Paul Potts first round audition. I have to say it brought a tear to my eye. He was excellent and I am delighted that he won the whole competition.

I thought your win was nothing short of THRILLING! I will keep the clip of your audition in my computer to play whenever I need to re-engage my faith in beauty and possibility. And I'm so very pleased for you that you now will be able to sing and be recognized for your extraordinary talent.

Mr. Potts, you absolutely took my breath away. I had tears in my eyes when you sang. And I am not at all a fan of opera! Congratulations to you - and thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.
