They are queens of their profession who strike admiration and fear in their subjects. But the celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz provoked a regal walkout when she instructed Her Majesty to lay down her crown.
The Queen offered a rare, public display of displeasure when she sat for Leibovitz, who is famed for her Vanity Fairphotographs of stars such as a pregnant Demi Moore in the nude.
A camera crew was invited to film the encounter for a fly-on-the-wall BBC One series, A Year with the Queen, made by the production company behind Wife Swap. The portrait was to commemorate the Queen’s spring visit to the United States. Leibovitz selected the white drawing room at Buckingham Palace.
The Queen arrived in white fur stole, gold-embroidered evening dress, Order of the Garter robes and diamond tiara, as requested. But Leibovitz, a perfectionist who once persuaded Whoopi Goldberg to pose in a bath of milk, had a change of heart.
“I think it will look better without the crown,” the film shows her informing the Queen. “Less dressy. The garter robe is so . . . extraordinary.”
“Less dressy?” the Queen says in response to this display of lãse-majesté. “What do you think this is?”
The Queen is then shown walking angrily from the drawing room. “I’m not changing anything,” she fumes at a flunky. “I’ve had enough of dressing like this, thank you very much.”
Fortunately an agreement was brokered and Leibovitz produced an acclaimed portrait, featuring the Queen gazing wistfully out of an open window, that was compared favourably with Cecil Beaton’s formal pictures of the monarch’s mother.
Leibovitz, 56, recalled: “She entered the room at a surprisingly fast pace, as fast as the regalia would allow her, and muttered, ‘Why am I wearing these heavy robes in the middle of the day?’ She doesn’t really want to get dressed up any more. She just couldn’t be bothered and I admire her for that.”
The five-part series is the highlight of BBC One’s autumn season. Peter Fincham, the Controller of BBC One, has also announced the first addition to the news output in 20 years, a summary bulletin to run for 60 to 90 seconds at 8pm every night. He said he hoped that it would encourage younger views to watch TV news.

Please do not try to lower the Monarchy by comparing two very different people. The Queen is Head of State, and like all people in this position need support from the taxpayer. In anycase the individual amount paid by each taxpayer is a matter of pence. These figures quoted out of context have little relevance.
Richard Powell, Wimborne Minster, Dorset United kingdom
I'd quite like to see the queen relaxing in a bath of milk. well, more than I would whoopi, anyway.
jem, london, uk
Heck, I would prefer your Queen to my President anyday!
Dennis Carr, Carpentersville , USA/ Illinois
He should be grateful she didn't clonk him one with the Royal Handbag!

What the hells wrong with these people at the BBC ? It about time some of them got sorted out and given their P 45's
Phil de Buquet, Newport, England
Well done your highness, the crown has been passed down for centuries, I wonder if Leibovitz has a heirloom older than she is,hence her ignorance.
Joe L, Suva, Fiji Islands
for her majesty the queen to of been depicted wearing garter robes without a tiara would surely have been a breech of form for what is essentialy a uniform as opposed to some arbitrary attire
michael henry adams, new york, usa
I am a fan of Liebowitz, but I do know she is bossy and a bit arrogant.
"Hey, I'm an artist. Let me create."
We should be grateful Annie didn't ask her to doff the robe and get into the royal bath wearing ONLY the crown.
Oh, and Annie's NOT worth $100,000/day.
James P, Sacramento, California
leave Her HIghness alone. she is one of the last bastions of dignity in this world. i love her dearly for her stoicsm which is sadly lost in world leaders of the day.
chi cheng low, petaling jaya , malaysia
scrap the monarchy
chris, Mayfair, London
Thank goodness the queen will not be pressurised by people who have no idea of the historical concept!. What are the garter robes for.. if not representative of whole and complete British History?
Ana, Cheltenham,
bit of a pity that after remaining serene throughout so many other situations when she would have been forgiven for blowing her cool, she had to do it over such a silly thing as a tiara....
joy, malaga, spain
Leibovitz, 56, recalled: â ...She doesnât really want to get dressed up any more. She just couldnât be bothered and I admire her for that.â
But surely, Ms Leibovitz, Her Majesty could be bothered, and actually did dress up for your session. So not only did you annoy the Queen with your ridiculous request, but you offend us all with your "couldnât be bothered" remark.
johnflewis, Isle of Wight, UK
Too soft, by half! Elizabeth I would have known how to deal with Annie Leibovitz!

Well done to her Majesty! You can't tell the Queen that the regal robes look better without the crown!
Lindsay, Bristol,
LET ME MAKE THIS PERFECTLY CLEAR
They both snap...but one cannot have two Queens
in the same palace.
The real Queen controls exposure, puts matters into true pespective.. and brings reality into sharp focus!

MAJESTY DESCRIBED AS "A SENSELESS GOBBLEFRUEDE"...."FED UP OF PANLENSERISING" ..."FOR PAPERS BOTTOM WIPING THE ARSEHOLES OF THE PUBLIC" GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!
A PHOENIX, BOURNEMOUTH, DORSET
I love the queen. I saw her once when I just past out from RAF Swinderby. I stood outside Buckingham palace, was the only one there when she came through the gates. She just looked at me and smiled and I was lightening struck.
Gerald, Pontypridd,
The Queen didn't walk out - the BBC aired pre-shoot footage of her walking down a corridor as though it occurred after the event, for which they have since apologised. (As reported elsewhere in today's Times.)
andy, London,
Another case of deliberate deception by the BBC.
After the Blue Peter phone in fraud you would think they had learned their lesson . . . . . but no.
Peter Mallinson, Bristol,
I believe the only advice HM Queen Elizabeth requires, is when Sir Michael Stoute is going to train her an Epsom Derby Winner. The fact that HM owns Ascot Racecourse strongly suggests that her choice of "headgear" would be "second to none". God Bless Her !
Ash Deo, Boston , UK
Knowone can blame the Queen for being annoyed with a celebrity photographer, albeit talented one.
Americans have little idea of what it means to have a monarch let alone be one. Presidents leave after eight years.
I think we should all just be thankful for her Majesty, a lady trained by regal grandparents and parents, who has done her job for over fifty-five years.
She is right that the less fuss the better behind or in front of the lens.
Darlene Taylor, Toronto, Canada
Annie Liebowitz's pictures fell sadly short of Cecil Beaton's in fact. She said she was trying to emulate his photos of the Queen when she was younger which used only natural light. His shots are great. Hers are poor. He was obviously a master of using natural light and she, equally obviously, is very reliant on big production, high tech studio shots.
Oonagh, Hong Kong,
I would say Her Majesty must have been particularly provoked to show her disapproval and I would suspect she must have had every right to do so. Well done, Your Majesty!
Peggy Podmore, Haliburton, Ontario, Canada
ER rules. Well done your Majesty. Bossy photographer's can be a right pain in the ......... Many can ruin a wedding or special occassion. Annie Leibovitz should have done her homework, shown more respect and realised that she was photographing the Queen of England and not an actor in the nude or a bath of milk.
Mark Harris, Swansea, Wales
Good for her!!!! Just another Yank who does not understand the history and tradition of royalty and its regalia, and is too arrogant to learn.
And shame on the BBC for being so silly as to be dazzled by a "celebrity" photographer, and for not believing there are outstanding photographers in the Queen's realm.
Bob Evans, Anaheim, California
