It is the new prime-time show for BBC Two presented by the woman described as the Asian Cilla Black. British singletons will be found a partner using the principles of arranged marriage.
Aneela Rahman will become the country’s new matchmaker-in-chief as the star of BBC Two’s Arrange Me A Marriage.
Mrs Rahman, a marriage broker from Glasgow, believes that the divorce rate in Britain would decline if more couples were matched up through class, education, family background, life goals and earnings.
She said: “For many nonAsians meeting someone is quite random, in a bar or club, but you wouldn’t buy a house or car drunk so why would you expect to find a life partner like that?”
Each week Mrs Rahman, who has been married for 15 years and has two children, will prepare a traditional Asian introduction for an unmarried British thirtysomething. Working with family and friends, she has one month to find a life partner for each “contestant”. But there are culture clashes.
Broadcasters are keen to test whether the principles from the Asian sub-continent can be applied to Britain. But Arrange Me A Marriageis also a spin on the Eighties television dating

I am an asian woman - indian and this show represents everything that is wrong with our culutre - infact i felt sick just watching it. to think that my parents and family would know the type of guy i went for ............. no way - i have seen many arranged marriages in my time - and they utterly lack romance - what happened to believing in true love - my parents didnt have an arranged marrige - they were at university together but all other relatives have had arrnaged marriages that utterly lack romance.
its time indian culture woke up to the concept of boyfriends ...................
asian family values are great and sopeakign as an indian i love that my family is close knit but we arent living in the dark ages !
smita, london ,
This programme is just a very, very watered down version of what it's actually like. Let's face it arranged marriages in the asian community are much more than just an introduction!!
You marry the entire family in an arranged marriage and it's an absolute nightmare!! You're paraded around like meat in a cattle market & the best meat wins the man!!! I'm not saying an arranged marriage is 'forced' but from a personal point of view there is an immense amount of pressure.
I am an independent, westernised British Asian and would ideally love to make up my own mind...marry a good human being regardless of colour, wealth, religion etc!! Unfortunately, albeit covert I don't have a choice!!! This programme 'introduces' not 'arranges'..the 2 are entirely different!
Hina Naweed, Manchester,
The first episode showed us how engrained the 'match made in heaven' myth is in the UK. The families finally managed to find a really good potential partner and yet within 3 months she'd ditched him, due to 'lack of a spark'! What a waste of so much hard work!
Simon, Cheltenham, Gloucs
We are supposed to be human beings ,who can be attracted to other human beings...whatever their background, race religion...class or wealth.England is one of the most diverse places to live in now...as far as I am concerned, weve had it with talk about segregation in every form.. including war ,because of it etc etc...we should be trying to save our country and our world not divide it further.Arranged marriages,or forced marriages, itsnot about wheather they work or not..its really about how we work together in our divided communities to work against class divide, wealth divide,RACE DIVIDE,religious divide...you name it.The asain community is on the defence when they practice it...what people are missing here, including Mizz Rahman is that no one culture is better than another,to say people meet when they are drunk(The english acc toRahman) does not represent every english person in this country.
Where are mixed relationships,a hugh feature of our society now.
Jas, nottingham,
If your family give you no choice but to have an arranged marriage (ie you can't marry outside your caste and race) isn't that somewhat forced?
Mark, Reading, UK
er where did you get forced from? did you watch the programme? did lexi seem forced or unhappy? i think not. think first......
simi, leicester, leicestershire
There is a sliding scale of force applied in arranged marriages- remember that forced marriages are also by definition arranged marriages!
The difference is in the degree of pressure applied. Obviously kidnap and assault put an arranged marriage firmly in the forced bracket. What about a girl from eg. a traditional Sikh family who is told she MUST have an arranged marriage, or be disowned? What about an Asian girl who wants to marry a white man- can her marriage be arranged?
The series features only white people being introduced to white people, which makes it very similar to the Asian system. What about white and Asian people who wish to marry?
Anthony, Sollihul, UK
Not sure it will work in British society. In Asian arranged marriages you marry the family not the individual.
Bal, Birmingham,
Sorry David, think you have miss read/understood the idea of this ''arrangement''
This is for people who want to meet someone but find it hard to meet people
I think it is a very good idea and wish my friends would put me up for something like this.
The only difference is in this programme, there will be no pier pressure as we do not have the same problems as Asian people do by having to find partners by a certain age.
Well done to the programme makers and hope many single people find their ideal partners
ALISON , BURY, U.K
Well the first episode showed that apparently introducing two people with similar attitudes, wants and requirements can hit it off. After all, it is what the upper classes and Royal Family have been doing for centuries trying to get their off-spring to marry similar, like-minded individuals. The expression money goes to money is exactly what that was all about and people with things in common are more likely to get on! Good luck Aneela, matchmaking has been going on for centuries and not just in the Asian community.
Fiona, Radlett,
Well, that leaves me out, then, ey? I'm American, over forty, and a very genuine old maid. Interesting concept, though.
Nance, East coast, USA
"Arranged" marriage, David. Not "forced". Please read the article properly and look up the definition of the two words.
Shamaila, Leeds,
You arrange flowers or the delivery of goods. Not marriages
"Broadcasters are keen to test whether the principles from the Asian sub-continent can be applied to Britain."
Why would a broadcaster be KEEN to test such an idea.
We should be discouraging forced marriages not encouraging
them.
Or is it just another piece of banal rubbish from the once respected B.B.C.
David, Devon, U.K.
