Last Orders for Guinness? BBC Two, 7pm
Guinness is good for you. It’s one of the UK’s best-loved brands. People who never even drink the stuff speak well of it. It has always been responsible for the most imaginative advertisements, and you’d be hard pressed to make Black Velvet without it. And yet Guinness has been struggling ever since real men started to eat quiche. The fashion, it seems, is for lighter drinks. Sales have fallen and there is even talk of the company having to sell its Dublin brewery. But Guinness is fighting back with the launch of Guinness Red, a lighter, new Labour version of the famous black stout. But will it be enough to reverse the company’s fortunes? In tonight’s Money Programme, Max Flint goes to Ireland to drink Guinness and find out. Well, someone has to.
First Cut: In Search of Mr Average, Channel 4, 7.35pm
Continuing its commitment to nurturing new talent, Channel 4 launches a series of half-hour documentaries by up-and-coming film-makers. The first, produced and directed by Tim Wardle, goes in search of the most average person in Britain. According to statistics, he or she will be 40 years old and married with two children. They will eat spaghetti bolognese, be £3,000 in debt, have sex eight times a month, drive a Ford Fiesta and live in north Colchester. After weeks of searching, the film-maker does find someone who (almost) fits the bill. What is more, he turns out to be exceptionally happy. According to Ben Page, chairman of the Ipsos MORI Social Research Institute: “If we could learn as a society to be happy with what we have – and perhaps to be a little more average sometimes – we might be happier.”
Ugly Betty, Channel 4, 9pm
Victoria Beckham makes her long-awaited appearance tonight and guess what – she’s fantastic, showing a nice line in self-mockery and adding some welcome spice to Wilhelmina’s wedding preparations. But our blushing bride isn’t pleased by her arrival. Shouldn’t she be the centre of attention and not her Posh glamorous, attention-seeking maid of honour? Betty, meanwhile, is wracked with guilt over her secret pact with Wilhelmina as she preapres to move in with Henry and it’s a big day in the Suarez household as Ignacio prepares for his big day – becoming a US citizen.
Comedy Showcase: Kevin Bishop, Channel 4, 10.30pm
The last in the Comedy Showcase series is a rapid-fire sketch show made by the same team that produced Star Stories. Among the sketches is the musical sequel to Schindler’s Listand the final episode of Tribe, never broadcast, in which Bruce Parry gets eaten by cannibals. There is also a cheerful chap in foul-weather gear who stands in front of the camera announcing: “I’m Griff Rhys Jones – and this is Britain’s 13th favourite lake,” plus a horribly convincing ad for a new fragrance by Jane Goody called Ignorance. Much of it is clever, and even the bits that aren’t clever are quick. Certainly, fans of Star Stories ought to enjoy it.
