Last year, EastEnders actor turned award-winning journalist Ross Kemp travelled to Afghanistan to live with, travel with, and face fire with British soldiers.
Kemp lived with sand storms, temperatures of over 50ºC and the constant threat of attack from the Taliban to film a documentary about the lives of soldiers for Sky One.
"Conditions in Afghanistan are intolerable,” he said. “The heat is stifling and there's the constant threat of snipers, RPG attacks and land mines. During one engagement between B Company and the Taliban we were pinned down by enemy fire in open ground; bullets fizzed by inches from our heads, hitting the ground on either side of us. It was the most frightening experience of my life. I’ve never hugged the ground as tightly as I did when that happened. It's definitely the closest I have ever come to dying. I was so scared."
Here, Times Online brings you an exclusive clip of Kemp under fire during his time in Afghanastan.
Ross Kemp in Afghanistan begins on Sky One and Sky One HD at 9pm on January 21.

My blood boils when people criticise Ross Kemp for this series. For anyone who wishes to keep abreast of the truth of the world events he has at least brought home the reality, by the best of media, availiable today, the harsh reality of war today and moreover the fact that the bloke next to you in the pub having a pint might just, might just, have been in his film months previously. I for one have never served in the armed forces but took the soft option and served along side them in the Metropolitan Police Force, which is no fun in its own right but for those who wish to put Ross down for what I consider to be an act worthy of a medal, and I would suggest possibly the Queen's Gallantry Medal, consider when you go to bed the time difference for a minute and think what these blokes are going through.Consider also his support team and cameraman who captured these images. These men don't make wars, they fight them. Well done Ross and your team I hope these words reach you.
Russ Owen, Bromley, Kent
i would like to say well done Ross Kemp for his eye opening documentary with the troops in Afghanistan,, the bloke deserves a medal. for what he has done. he has shown the country just what our troops have to cope with in this war zone especially with the lack of vital equipment proper rations and as he said in his last programme lack of helicopters and paid an insufficient wage for their troubles. Tony Blair and the government have a lot to answer for, you dont see any of their offspring off fighting for queen and country as they are too busy lining their own pockets. Ross Kemp has brought everything about this war to the forefront of peoples minds and made us realise just what horrific sacrifices our brave soldiers make in the line of duty,i salute each and every one of them and say thank you Ross and your team for being brave enough to do what you done. Glad there were no more casulties,it was heartbreaking losing 9.It was 9 too many
vivienne, ballymena, n ireland
ya well done ross for this it was something of a eye opener mate for all ,but them men and young men out there it must be hell.thanks again mate, good look to all out there,
mark thornton, wakefield, england
Well done to Ross Kemp, a very brave man to do what he is doing.
He is showing what our boys really face out there, something what that idiot Tony Blair has started. Our boys out there are with duff kit whilst Tony and his family have lined their pockets. Blair should be arrested stripped of all of his assets and his passport confiscated then made to work in a no go area for whites in Birmingham. His wealth should be pumped into the RBL or go to the families who have lost their loved ones fighting his wars.
Respect to Ross Kemp and our boys
Strength and Honour.

I guess the BBC will be showing the Taliban side of events....
Richy, Tokyo, Japan
I have a great deal of respect for Ross Kemp. My boyfriend will be fighting in Afghanistan all too soon, and the series has really opened my eyes as to what he will be facing. Any show that raises the publics awareness to the plight of our hard working soldiers deserves full credit.
Sally, Birmingham,
Very good am glued to the TV when this comes on, this is the best thing on TV true lives and how they work, i was a serving soldier in the 70,s and nothing like this was done,Northern Ireland was no picnic, Flack Street Mill, Whiterock, the bogside,Masonic Army Post,Moscow camp and Armagh, no 1 saw what we went through i take my hat of to you Ross Kemp and the guys in the front line , the politions have started a war that may take us years to get out of it maybe another 30 year hike for british forces
old soldier, midlands, uk
Well done to Ross and his team it certainly opens your eyes to what our Brave lads are going through
BRITISH ARMY THE BEST IN THE WORLD
Susan Lerigo, North Yorkshire,
Well done Ross Kemp! A great bit of journalistic 'fly on the wall' filming in a war that has largely fell by wayside in the broadsheets and the news.
Those that think he is 'posing', 'playing soldiers' or 'advancing his own career at the cost of others' should look hard at this series: the look on his face when he faced effective enemy fire, how he interacted with the troops and his rapour with both officers and soldiers was enough to show anyone sat in their comfy armchair that he was genuine and being treated with respect by those around him. The army are damned good at their job and Ross/Sky are showing this in the real world of modern day warfare.
He knows his place and is not trying to be a soldier - as the rangemaster said during Ross's familiarisation shoot with the SA80, 'SAS?!? My arse!'
For those of you looking to criticise and scorn this piece of work, remember Ross and his camera team are giving you a somewhat sterilised look into the brave work our forces do!
Dave C, Nuneaton, UK
Gnags in other countries are largely irrelevant, even gangs in this country can be avoided and are therefore of limited interest, but what old Rossie did in Afghanistan is unmissable. He's given the best insight I can recall of how the troops fare in modern-day warfare and done it right from the front line too.
Actors aren't usually that brave and little they they do really classifies as exemplary in my books, but this guy has now been there and done it for real - the lives of the British soldiers involved in the war against the Taliban came into everyone's front rooms and it demonstrates their unsung professionalism and bravery. he should get a medal for this documentary, just after every single soldier gets theirs!
Mike Spellman, Maidenhead, UK
I think that ross kemp is a very brave men but must on been his bravest time out with our troops
Squaddies dont have very good reputaions but what they are doing out in afgan dersereve them to have one soo well done men and carry on with the good work
Rachel, Cirencester, England
Thankyou for showing what our brave soldiers go through.Men and women. My daughter is in iraq for the third time geting rpg attacks every day and night but its never on the news.We would be lost without them. The goverment should look after them better. The public should back them up more if we didnt fight Terrorism our country would be a sad place. Our troops are Hero,s and should be treated like Hero,s when they come home.
nicola toner, Buckley Flintshire, Wales
Ross Kemp is finally showing the world what our forces are going through.
My husband has had to go out there and leave 3 young children including a new born daughter, over the Christmas period and we live in fear every day.
Our troops are hero's and they should be treated as such.
Much respect to all those out there our love and thoughts are with you.
Nicky, Oakham, Rutland
I'm always amused at how the west are completely oblivious of the shocking reality of war. A disappointing fact of Afghanistan is that heroin production has shot up since the arrival if the US. You could say the CIA view it as a profitable commodity. In the same way cocaine was viewed by them during the Vietnam war.
Maxim, London, London
well done Ross Kemp. When Ivan Little Filmed our own "Royal Irish Regiment "Training in Kenya, he didnt Happen to Make the rest of the journey with our Troops to Afghanistan afterwards .... to let the World see what our Brave Soldiers have to endure out there, whilst fighting Terrorisim.... !!!!
anne Christie. N.I.
anne Christie, Northern ireland, united Kindom
Well done Ross, the British public would take notice if there was fighting in our town and citys, only then the soldiers would receive the respect for what they are going through.
They all deserve the respect and support now, with the available Media Technology today we can see first hand what soldiers are achieving in the fight against terrorism, they are not fighting the country they are fighting the minority who inflict torror on the peoples of Iraq and Afghanistan .
A soldier just obeys orders, if this terrorism splilled over into our Citys and towns, who would the British public expect to protect them, the soldiers are already protecting this country.
Just Imagine if there were media coverage in the First World War, how many men would join if they saw the carnage of the Somme. The UK had their heads in the sand then and this is happening again, Ross Kemp is there to show us the real truth of what our lads are going through.
Kevin Richards, Bridgend, South Wales
Send Gorden Ramsey into the same platoon so we can see who is the real man!
Pam, London, IL
For the naysayers who just try and attack Kemp for going out there, having spoken to people who were out there with him in the regiment, he didn't try and be a "hardman" he was out there because he wanted to tell people about what it's like for frontline soldiers. His grandfather was a member of the regiment, the guy's said he was a decent bloke so didn't try and act tough or make out he was anything other than a guy trying to find out what it's like.
Pip, he wasn't exactly going there unprepared, he did op tag with the unit, that's the beat up training beforehand. As for Clive, it's not about entertainment, least ways it wasn't for Kemp, his aim was to highlight British servicemen and woman and the conditions they have. I'd advise watching before commenting on what you think the motives were.
Tim Hamilton, Chatham,
Why are we supposed to see invasion of other peoples' country and trying to impose our systems on them as entertainment ?
Clive, Epsom, England
It's time Ross Kemp stayed with acting instead of this continual pretence of being a hard man. He would not last 10 minutes in the real world of the military.
He sadly thinks his 'hard man' rolls on TV are real when they are totally the opposite.
Possibly more to the point, why does the MOD go along with this sort of 'Boys Own' TV programming. The military have enough problems without having to look after the likes of Kemp and a camera crew in a war zone.
Pip Waller, Canberra, Australia
Its clear Mike, from Liverpool is overflowing with that good old British staple, envy. God forbid that Ross Kemp should turn from actor to respected journalist without being in the dole queue eh Mike (getting roles....uh????). Well I never went a bundle on Eastenders but Mr Kemp gets my respect for this program and nearly getting his noodles shot off. I for one can't wait to see it. That's what it boils down to Mike, from Liverpool and I bet the viewing figures soar for this program. Anyway Mike from Liverpool, you should stop whinging and try it sometime. It would give you something to brag about down the boozer!
John, London, UK
I don't understand why this guy keeps getting roles??? there was more life in the thunderbird puppets
Now he is resorting to scrapping the barrel for sympathy by doing this docu-soap
Do us a favour guv'na, less of the homoeroticism and get back to Albert Sq
Plus he needs to lose some weight, its a fact!
Mike, Liverpool, UK
As a current soldier im a firm believer that 'war is glorious to all those that havn't experienced it. Lets hope for a good entertaining series with no casualities, though they usually are an inevitability, but lets hope they come through it safe and sound!
Luke, Manchester,
bring back national service for people that commit pety crimes to stop over crowding in prisons
much respect for ross kemp
John, Aberaeron, Wales
National service was ok for my friends, they knew when they would be called up and if they were working or still at University their jobs/schooling was on hold for them. This call up was the making of them, so they say, some even achieved commissions and most gained enormous confidence., so that going back to Uni charged through the course like it really was a "piece of cake". SO WHY DON'T WE GIVE IT A GO?
Samantha, Stonehouse, UK
Bring back Nat Service - it will be a good thing
Samantha, Stonehouse, UK
As a former soldier (now 87), I take my hat off to Kemp and Sky 1 for this great example. The media are often far too negative in their coverage of live conflict. How refreshing to see a reporter take the time to glorify war. The screaming and cursing really makes one feel as though we are there. This will be a marvellous series to boost recruitment. And so it should. When things go well, the armed services can be damned good for the soul as well as the spirit. Kemp's Boys Own adventure will be essential viewing. Let's hope we get a few casualties along the way!!
Athol , Mt Albert, New Zealand
Well it's on Sky one, so I won't be able to see it. But I visited the country in 2003 as a casual traveller, crossing in from neighbouring Pakistan. During that year the northern areas were quite a bit safer than the south. Nowadays the whole country is fair game, pretty much. I'm glad I took the opportunity at the time before it kicked off big time again. The Afghan people are wonderful folks. On the news you would just get the impression the whole country consists of Taliban running around with Ak-47s. I met some of the most serene and well spoken people there with fascinating stories to tell, and men who were hard as nails after having lived through countless conflicts through the years. It is a truly beautiful country, certainly in the north. Most people in Britain think it is just a hot sandy waste land. Don't forget the mighty snow covered Hindu Kush mountains,Deep blue lakes, and the plethora of ancient historical monuments. Buddhist, Moghul, etc. Rich history.
Mike, West , Britain
hats off too ross kemp for attempting to highlight the things our soliders are doing over there its just a shame that the govement didnt look after our troops like they do looking after the thugs that britain is spewing out nowadays bring back national service they are real men and women over there my son being one of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tracey, northumberland, england
I went to Kabul on the way to Punjab, India in 1976, we stopped in a hotel, it was beautiful view and a peaceful time, hope those days could return.
