Tomorrow, Today!
Radio 4, 11.30am
Everyone, from the writer Christopher William Hill down, seems to have had a
whale of a time making this comedy set in the past but concerning a radio
soap that takes place in 2008. And you can see why. Two worlds are your
oyster, and events in both of them are known. In 1962 you have all the
events going on that happened then – reds under the bed, mainly – while the
2008 stuff that the characters in the soap imagine would be commonplace now
(still with me? Amazing) provokes the usual knowing laughter that comes from
knowing how wrong they got it. Toss in rampant paranoia along the lines of
1984(the book, not the year), a death or two and a first-rate cast (Peter
Bowles, Cheryl Campbell and John Fortune) and you have something that should
come to boil nicely over the next six weeks.
Dilemmas of Modern Martyrs
Radio 4, 3.30pm
Nice title. Good short stories, too, read by a variety of excellent voices,
and written by the Scottish up-and-comer Morven Crumlish, watch out for her.
The first of this week’s stories is The True Story of the 12 Dancing
Princesses, read by Shirley Henderson. You’ll know the story, about the
princesses who danced all night?
Rogue Male
BBC7, 9.30am/8.30pm
It is not often that one recommends the final episode of a 15-part reading of
a book in which an anonymous assassin undergoes an utterly miserable time
for what seems like for ever, but there are two reasons not to miss the
denouement of Geoffrey Household’s period thriller. One of them is finding
out what finally happens to the poor bloke; the other is to applaud Michael
Jayston’s briliant reading of it over the past three weeks.
