Big Brother Celebrity Hijack drew to a close last night with little more than half a million viewers.
Channel 4, keen to distance itself from last year's race row, introduced the show in place of Celebrity Big Brother, screening it on digital channel E4.
But the series failed to capture the public's imagination and last night went out with a whimper.
Student politician John Loughton, 20, beat circus performer Emilia Arata to win the show and take home the £50,000 prize.
But his moment of triumph was only watched by 644,000 people. A further 81,000 watched later on catch-up channel E4+1.
By contrast, last year's Celebrity Big Brother final - won by Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty - had an audience of 5.8 million.
Today, a Channel 4 spokesman insisted Celebrity Hijack was being counted as a success.
"Big Brother Celebrity Hijack has been one of the most successful original commissions for E4.
"It is the first time one of the terrestrial channels has stripped a reality show across the schedule of a digital sister channel, without the prop of a core channel show to drive audience. In this context, the ratings performance is strong," the spokesman said.
This year's show saw a number of celebrities "hijack" the house and take on the role of Big Brother.
The 12 housemates were chosen for their special talents and included an artist, musician, entrepreneur and racing driver.
During the show the contestants made frequent reference to the "millions" of viewers watching their every move, believing they would emerge to lives of fame and fortune.

I was also completely hooked on with Celebrity Hijack. The contestants were fantastic and entertaining my favorites being Emilia and Jeemy. At last some intelligent people were put in the house!!
Wish this was broadcasted on Channel 4 though as many of my friends wantes to watch it but didnât have freeview signals at the area where they live.
Anyway⦠Well done to the Producers! I am now looking forward to watch the follow-up next Wednesday the 6th Feb.
S. McLoughlin, West Sussex,
I found Big Brother Celebrity Hijack compulsive viewing, I was hooked throughout. I have given a wide berth to the awful Big Brother series each summer , with contestents of desperate hopes for instant TV success!, and worn out forgotten B listers and faded careered TV presenters past there sell by date, seeking attention by claiming" they want to go home as they miss there families,"on Celebrity BB. For the new digital TV edition Hijack what we saw was young , quite select talent , who needn't be there and the whole concept and variety of the nightly performances made excellent viewing entertainment. Hopefully next year this series can move to channel 4 . Obviously there's been a lot of negativity towards the show as it was in E4 a digital channel that doesn't get the publicity of Channell 4. I enjoyed it and would have this any day to the other dreary 2 BB sister series.

"This was one of the best Big Brothers in recent memory"...
...ah but for those hazy Big Brother days of yesteryear, like the classic "rationing" episodes of the 50's and the crazy swinging Big Brother of 1968 eh?
J.Wilkes, Gloucester,
I think that Celebrity Hijack was a great addition to the BB family. I enjoyed watching it all. I love Big Brother and I am getting just a tad tired of the press bashing it all the time. I do however think for the summer show they should take more inspiration from the U.S. version, making it more game like and tactical with the evictees voting for the winner perhaps along side a public vote would really win back doubters who say BB has had its day!
AJ, Yeovil, Somerset
This last Big Brother was the most boring ever. Celebrity BB should be just that - celebrities, even Z list ones.
This years contestnts were a bunch of nobodies, they all looked the same and were all the same age so there was no variety, and noone really cared what they were up to.
The only way to BB to work is to have a real variety of people so firework flies!
The best Celebrity BB ever was in my opinion, the 2006 one when Michael Barrymore and all the other interesting people were on.

i have watched all the Big Brother shows,,and i must say,,it was most enjoyable, with none of the swearing we usually have to listen to,,,why cant they all be like that,,,?
Beryl Harbert, Sanderstead,S,Croydon, surrey., England
This was one of the best Big Brothers in recent memory, with experimental elements like they used to have when it all started. A good mix of housemates too, more normal and less of those mega-crazy types they usually put in there.
Nic, Loughborough, United Kingdom
Taking the show off mainstream TV was a huge mistake - I was an avid BB fan but its much easier to forget it is on when the show is buried in the mass of available digital channels out there - part of the interest used to be chatting to friends and work colleagues about the show but not everyone has digital so there's a distinctive lack of interest out there now. It put me off and I suspect from the viewing figures, I wasn't the only one!!

the show was not that bad, I thought it was a good idea and was entertaining to see talented people on there.
However, the final night was such an anti climax. It was so poorly done with the interviews being held inside the house infront of the other housemates and no one , including dermot, seemed to know wat to quite do with themselves throughout the show. interviewing them before they go outside was so stupid and for some reason there was a constant loss of sound. it was the worst final night big brother has ever had, which is a shame as the series itself was not that bad.
Dylan, Birmingham,
Big Brother has peaked and should now bow out.The efforts to liven the show up are pathetic and sad to watch, the falling viewing figures are proof.
Richard Harding, Norwich, UK/norfolk
i think that anthony should have won cos he deserved it and emelia shouldn't have been in the final
katy , cardiff,
