Tell ’er indoors it should be a nice little earner. Minder, the classic series that turned Arthur Daley into an 1980s icon, is being revived.
Millions tuned in to the adventures of the wheeler-dealer and his long-suffering “minder”, played by George Cole and Dennis Waterman.
With his camel-hair coat, money-making schemes and dodgy motors, “Arfur” Daley embodied the Thatcherite entreprenurial spirit. His catch-phrases became common parlance.
The chemistry between Cole and Waterman, who played Terry McCann, the “muscle” who extricated Daley from trouble, produced an on-screen double act that lasted ten years.
The ITV show continued with George Cole alone until 1994, and his role will go to Shane Richie, who played the publican Alfie Moon in EastEnders. Although no decision has been made on the “minder” role, the producers may ask Dennis Waterman, 59, to play some part in the new show.
In a spot of wheeler-dealing of which Daley might approve, Minder is being revived by Five, which is seeking a home-grown drama hit, according to the magazine Broadcast.
“Scripts are in development with a view to a series being commissioned later in the year,” said a Five spokesman. It could be ready this autumn.
Cole, 81, has said previously that a revived show reuniting him with Waterman should not be attempted. He said: “I think it’s had its day now and I don’t think it would work.”

Have to disagree with George Cole. A 2008 reunion between an 81-year-old Arthur and a 59-year-old Terry would be very interesting indeed!
A remake starring Shane Ritchie, however, is an early front-runner for "worst idea of the millennium"....
Graeme, Bromley,
Why not give it to Gary Webster to continue on from the early 90's series? Then Webster and Waterman could work well?

Why are they 'reviving' programmes such as Minder and Sweeney - can't they find anything new to whet our taste buds? The British industry isn't a patch on the American tv programmes.
Leave well alone.

How can you possibly re-cast the 'Arfur' role and still have Dennis Waterman in it too? Surely Terry would spot the difference! If it has to happen, then surely it would be far more credible to make Shane Ritchie a relative of Arfur?
George Cole is a legend and made the role his own.

I agree with Pamela. The main reason it worked was because of the age difference between the men. Arthur thought he was a man of the world, but Terry actually was. They'd need to find a Minder of about 14 years old for it to work otherwise.
hazellove, Brighton, UK
Richie is too young to play the 'Arthur' character, it won't work unless they choose their actors very carefully.
Pamela, Surrey,
I think if the scripts are right it will work out great. It would be nice if dennis waterman is in there as well.
