LONDON The BBC has promised that its journalism will remain impartial after unveiling a £25 million Arabic television news service funded by the Government.
Designed to compete against al-Jazeera and other satellite channels, BBC Arabic Television is seen as a major intervention in the battle to win hearts and minds in the region. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office agreed to fund the first UK state-backed international television channel after the BBC said it was failing to reach a potential audience of 100 million viewers. Launched next Monday, the Arabic-language service will also operate as a BBC website and be available on mobile phones and hand-held computers. Ultimately, the BBC hopes the service will be broadcast in the US and Europe.
Critics say the BBC has little chance of supplanting the established al-Jazeera and al-Arabiya channels and would have to avoid offending Arab Governments to survive. Ten World Service radio stations, mainly in Eastern Europe, have been axed to fund the channel.

Well well well... a BBC in Arabic. What a breath taking idea! Perhaps the British Government would like to explain to British tax payers and TV lisence payers what the mission of this new endeavour is to justify the launching of this new channel. What happened to the BBC World radio channel? How did the Government determine that an Arabic TV channel would do what the age-old radio has not or could not do?

Excellent. I'm working in Dubai, although I continue to pay my license fee in the UK. I can get BBC Arabic TV free, but I can't get an advert free BBC website, access key area of the site, or download programmes with the iPlayer.
What a waste of money.
adam, Dubai,
Arabs who speak English and want to watch the news on the BBC, will watch the BBC in English. Arabs who cant speak English and think the BBC is biased will not watch the BBC even if you assign them their own live-in personal reporter!
Arabs are not stubid, they are more politically aware than others because of the non ending conflict in the region. They do understand when a campaign is just a probaganda campign , so, It's all about ubiased, sincere reporting. Do that the BBC and the Arabs will get their own interpreters and sit glued to their TV screens for your news BBC .. In English :-)

Another waste of money. Forgive me if I am wrong but I thought that we were a British Nation. What a complete joke!!!!

arabs like to watch arabic BBC for its unbiased policy, remember the death of princess!!! had caused BBC to lose its funder, and all its broadcasting crew to aljazeera
arabic french, russian, italian, and u.s.a, they all broadcasting news and documantaries in arabic 24 hours on hot bird and they all free, it is about time bbc catching up with world politics.

They're basically chasing the money. Don't you people remember Bush saying that his W.O.T in the Middle East could last up to 100 years. Do you folks seriously expect the BBC to cover this major event from a one sided point of view to it's home based British viewers?
The Majority of this W.O.T's viewers are spread out across the world and most of them don't speak English. U.K probably counts as 2-3%, i don't know?
People have to get out of UK and visit rest of the world. It does not only consist of white english speaking British people. For example, there are more India's in India (brown hindu folks) on this world then all the white (christian folks) from every country added together. Start looking at the big picture.

I am sure the £25 Million could have been put to some better use rather than competing with established channels in order to allow the BBC to give it's 'impartial veiw'.
Sometimes things are just ridiculous in my opinion and this is one of them!!!!
Simon , Manchester, UK
Mark, Derby - What are you talking about? In Britain, we speak english, Welsh, Gaelic, French, German, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Italian and Arabic - you ever been to London?
Simon Albion, London, UK
Think the clue is in the name BRITISH Broadcasting Corporation. Our government is funding this!!?? How about charging the Arabic watchers of this channel a licence fee like we have to in Britain? Shame on the BBC and our government, nothing new there though is there?
Matt, Mids, UK
The BBC is to remain impartial? What a joke!
Pat Liberty, Citrus Heights,, USA
This is outrageous. We don't speak arabic in this country, we british speak english or has that escaped the BBC. The only possible use for this channel is as a propoganda feed. Forget it. Who cares what other countries think? Let's just concentrate on defending and improving our own country from foreign and traiterous terorists.
Mark, Derby, UK
I have doubts that BBC is coming to us for enlightenment as we thought earlier last century. Considering the historical responsibility on the part of the British government about our present suffering in this region, the British government will not spend that amount of money unless the new channel is expected to achieve some political and economical interests. I thank that Arabs have their own and sufficient source of credible news and information as well as wide enough coverage; Al Jazeerah. However, we will welcome BBC and see then decide.
