Attend a special evening hosted by Mike Atherton
The mother of a teenager whose party was gatecrashed by 2,000 people has criticised BBC Radio 1 for allegedly broadcasting details of the fancy dress celebration live on air.
Rebecca Brooks, 54, claimed that details of the party held by her daughter, Sarah Ruscoe, 17, at the family home, Colehayes Park, near Bovey Tracey, in Devon, were broadcast in a “shout out” on the radio station and advertised on the internet.
Between 1,500 and 2,000 people turned up, said Miss Ruscoe, a Year 12 pupil at Torquay Grammar School for Girls. Attempts to clear the gatecrashers from the property failed until police arrived with dogs and riot vans, she said. “By roughly 10:30 the crowd managed to make its way to Bovey Tracey, leaving a trail of destruction.”
The family reportedly spent the weekend clearing up the mess after the party on Friday night. Miss Ruscoe, 17, said that she had initially invited about 50 people but was expecting about 300 to turn up.
Mrs Brooks said: “It is devastating. It was absolutely mindless. People apparently ring in to Radio 1 and say what they are doing for the weekend in a ‘shout out’. Someone obviously said there is a party. It was like a rock festival like Glastonbury.” The 21-bedroom house in 20 acres is used for school trips and weddings.
A BBC spokesperson said that the DJ Pete Tong “did not specify the name or address of the venue, but read out details of a mansion party taking place in Bovey Tracey sent in by a listener. He gives shout outs on his show every week. He would never knowingly give an identifiable address. If the family makes a formal complaint we will fully investigate.”
