Radio 4, 3.30pm
Every afternoon, Monday to Friday, specially commissioned short stories will be dealing with the human/technology interface and how we interact with the tools, gadgets and devices intended to make our lives easier. Today's story, The Navigator, concerns a 67-year-old widow learning to drive, and her highway experiences with that modern convenience, the sat-nav. It's written by the novelist - and, quite coincidentally - Literary Editor of The Times, Erica Wagner, and is read by Emma Kennedy. Other stories this week are the work of Adam Thorpe, Helen Simpson, Gerard Woodward and Jeanette Winterson.
The Don't Watch with Mother Sketchbook
Radio 4, 11pm
The Happy Mondays season of new comedy by performers familiar and not continues with this strange little satirical sketch show that pretends to be a compilation of moments from sketches recorded over a 30-year period. Thus we get snippets from the un-PC 1970s (a singer with dementia who keeps introducing his bass player because he forgets he's already done it) to the Major years (John Selwyn Gummer killing off his family in ever more bizarre ways as he keeps repeating the politically suicidal moment when he got his daughter to eat a hamburger in defiance of the threat du jour, CJD). Yes, it doesn't seem that hilarious when written down and, despite the enthusiasm of a studio audience whose laughter is so artificial that it sounds canned, which probably means it really is canned, it's very patchy. When it works - as with a brilliant pastiche of Dexy's Midnight Runners - it's marvellous. For the rest, the flow of laughter will rather depend on how many pints you had before returning from the pub and tuning in.
