How bad or skew-whiff was it going to be? Tim Kring, the creator of Heroes (BBC Two) has apologised for this second season of the hit show about a group of people who discover, for good and bad, that they possess special powers. Kring says the imminent romantic storylines are not “a natural fit”, and that the pacing of this 11-episode season is amiss.
His mea culpa, the TV equivalent of doing a Ratner, is an acknowledgment of how winning the first season of Heroes became — especially to those who would normally balk at a science fiction show. The light and shade of the characters intersected with a plot cleverly constructed to be as simple or devilish as your brain could cope with.
Season one ended with brothers Nathan and Peter Petrell exploding in space and viewer favourite Hiro, the guy obsessed by the notion of heroes and able to do freaky things with time, landing face down in the grass of seventeenth century Japan surrounded by fractious warriors.
Phew, Hiro managed to freeze time to escape the warriors, and hooked up with Takezo Kensei, who had long been a hero of his — but who turned out to be a profiteering scoundrel. And he was English. Hiro’s new quest is to actually make a hero out of a crooked coward. “You must save the swordsmith and make the swordsmith’s daughter fall in love with you,” he told Kensei — only to receive a punch in the face.
The Petrelli brothers are alive: Nathan, the ruthless politico, has grown a beard, is consumed by grief over his brother’s presumed death and seems to have inherited Niki the stripper’s penchant for seeing doppelgangers in mirrors. Peter, naked and at the mercy of some criminals, was unearthed in a crate in Cork. Their mother, crackling with malevolence, is facing the threat of death. Just after warning her to disappear, Hiro’s father himself was rushed off the roof by a mysterious figure (a roof characters regularly fall off and pick themselves up from, it should be noted).
Claire the cheerleader, with her amazing self-repairing body, is trying to make herself nondescript in a new town. But her latest beau seems to be able to fly; and, after a nasty fall, she clicked everything back into place. Mohinder, the lecturer who knows how to wear linen, is about to infiltrate “the Company”, and Molly, the girl who was saved by Matt, the policeman who can hear thoughts, is being targeted by the evil Sylar.
The storytelling was taut, including the introduction of a brother and sister (the latter seemingly kills people without wanting to). The zest of season one is intact. “How long can they dwell in the shadows?” Mohinder asks at the beginning. Not long: the “heroes” had to save New York the first time round from a fiery apocalypse, and now have to contain a virus. Whatever Kring in his sackcloth says, fans will sign up to whatever the next 11 episodes bring.

I'm ashamed! I was SO excited that the new series was starting, I only got to stay awake for the first one. Must've peaked too early. And 'Cork, Ireland' was 'McSorley', Sylar? Or don't we know yet? Too much jumping about Jamie Oliver stylee for tired eyes, but I'll watch the repeats...

All the above is true if you are not watching, really watching Heros.
Pause and consider, relish the character development, the new story line and the sub plots, ... Heros has been missing for too lng and every one has lapsed into a mental lethargy.
Wake up, it's back.

Couldn't disagree more. Watched the first series back to back captivated, taking breaks only for calls of nature, but I struggled through the first 5 or so episodes of this series before giving up. Its a sad fact that these kind of American shows enevitaibly lose their mojo at some point.

Awful!! Loved the first season it was brilliant, the second was short and terrible due to the Writers strike!! What should of happened! Is that Styler should of been killed off once and for all!! and some new bad guys should be brought into it! They should of not shown who the "nightmare" man either
Adam Webb, Mk, UK
The irish accents from Essex are up there with Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. But that apart it was good, a bit like the first episode of season 1. It will get better.

The same thing happened to the X-Files. Watched by a few geeks on BBC 2 then became 'sexy', thanks to tabloid coverage.
Once it attracts the interest of celeb-loving chavs, it's done
John, London,
How can anything be "brilliant" that needs an auxiliary programme after each episode to tell you what's going on?
Look at the worst programmes on terrestrial TV: Heroes, Torchwood, Dr Who - they all have this appendage. Who needs reviewers when the producers themselves flag up the dross?

I have seen this whole thing, on the internet, I can tell you now its no where near as good as season one, The new brother and sister combo are a spare wheel thought the show.
It would have been better to leave the show till after the strike I can only hope they do better in season 3.

The second series starts off interesting, but the plot trails off pretty quickly. Good to see Kring apologised though, roll on the 3rd
Owen, London, UK
It's getting more and more incredible since season one to two. With then influence of the editors' strike the 11-episode-long season two appeared rough-and-ready.
I am looking forward to season three though.
Jack , Beijing, China
Awful. So was the first series with any sophisticated hindsight; it managed to look good without being about anything.
Tom, spryfield, canada
The second series of heroes is unbuh-LEEEV ably poor.
The stories suffer from lengthy boring parts and then miss out the bits you feel they were building up to.
Kring's apology is the only reason I'll be watching the third series.
Irish accents were amazingly bad too!!!
