Janice Turner: Commentary
We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times
It is inconceivable that Annie Leibovitz was taken aback by the outraged response to her shoot of a half-naked, smudge-lipsticked, knowing-eyed 15-year-old Miley Cyrus. Leibovitz is an exceptionally calculated image-maker, who said recently she uses nudity to “create an instant intimacy” between subject and viewer.
One can believe Cyrus’s description of Leibovitz’s persuasive powers in the studio, pushing the young actress – fame-hungry and flattered to pose for the world’s most famous photographer for a magazine such as Vanity Fair – into ever more risqué poses. “You can’t say no to Annie,” Miley said. “She’s so cute. She gets this puppy-dog look, and you’re like, OK.”
Indeed, Leibovitz used the trick dirty-old-men artists have employed to seduce vulnerable girls through the ages: she persuaded Miley that the pictures were “artistic”. But this is no celebration of young beauty. It is a blatant bedroom shot. Leibovitz saw the shock potential, the lip-smacking titillation, in posing a star known for her wholesome, girlish role in Disney’s Hannah Montana as if photographed by her deflowering first boyfriend.
What is more cynical is the decision by Vanity Fair’s supposed high-moralist Graydon Carter to publish the pictures. He saw their potential in selling his magazine’s special teen issue, since the chief excitement surrounding girl-women such as Cyrus concerns their entry on to the sexual marketplace. Years ago a website even ticked off the days and hours until the moment Britney Spears was “legal”.
It is the madness of Britney, and the drug problems and food disorders of Lindsay Lohan – both were also preteen Disney stars – that should prey upon the consciences of Leibovitz, Carter and Miley’s parents, who attended the shoot. Miley should be guided with care and respect into the adult stage of her career (if that’s what she wants), bypassing the money and headline-making phase of ravaged Lolita.

Re: A Fan of Reality Thank you! Sally Mann and Leibovitz both effectively capture young girls who are both innocent, and beautiful. I grew up watching Britney and Lindsey and guess what!? I'm not a drug addicted troubled youth. It's all about how you see things. Lay off Annie and Miley.
Hope, cooper city,
Wow, get over it. Fashions of children Miley's age are much racier and show more skin than the Leibovitz photos. Miley is a lot more together than many of her contemporaries.
I understand the knee-jerk reaction to another teen star heading toward the Dark Side, but this is not that sort of event.
Walt, Estes Park, CO, USA
It is not Leibovitz's fault. She is an artist. It is the parent's job to say, "Miley? How about we wait about 3 years for that shot?" Annie was not "preying" on anyone, she was taking photograph. It was a digital picture so it was viewed by Miley, her parents, and her execs, before it was printed.
Joe Anderson, Bay City ,
As a young Mylie Cyrus fan I think that it is sad that people are putting young tallented actressess in to the public eye with things like this. Miley's Mum and Dad are caught up in the whole thing too. The true meaning of modesty and good values are lost in a world of Media, a bad message to us
Cara , Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
c. its Miley without the clumped on makeup, without the Hannah Montana wig. Its just purely Miley, and the profound innocence displayed in the shot is gorgeous.
Abbi, peterborough,
Annie Leibovitz is not just 'a woman and a mother'. She is a lesbian (and thereby not quite an average woman) and she was previously infamous for her tasteless images of former lover Susan Sonntag's corpse. We cannot simply say that the 'art' tag purifies an image. Art and sleaze are old friends.
Kirby, Oldham, UK
Leibovitz and Vanity Fair are to blame in this situation. Although the photos are very artistic and reminiscent of a renaissance painting, Annie should have asked permission from Miley's parents to set up a shot like this with a minor. Sounds like Mom & Dad would have said no! N. Valdes
Nicole Valdes, Orlando, USA
This is outrageous! Annie Leibovitz is an amazing, reputable and respected photographer. I have a hard time believing that she coerced Cyrus into doing anything she didnt want to do,especially with her parents on set. I think everyone is overreacting. These photos are artsy and classy.
Ashley, Deer Park, Tx,
I see nothing wrong with the photos. Annie Leibovitz is a mother, a women and a class act. If a viewer sees"sex" in these photos, then the viewer is the sick one!
Margaret, Oyster Bay USA,
Anyone who says this isn't the sexualisation of children is kidding themselves. Why do we as a society exaggerate and fear paedophile so much? Because it's our cultural guilt. Photographers like Annie, the media and arts world in general, are complict in perpetuating this form of child abuse.
Fraser, London, UK
Another tragic chapter in the decline of our moral values and social awareness. Shame on the parents for leaving this young lady unprotected, shame on Vanity Fair for putting the mighty dollar above decency and shame on Leibovitz for exploiting a child. Walt Disney is is turning in his grave.
Ray, San Diego, USA
Miley Cyrus is 15-not an adult. The photographer. Vanity Fair execs and her parents are the adults. These adults should know better. It's not Miley's fault, she should not have been the one to issue an apology! If she weren't a star, child protective services would be involved.
Debbie Jones, Ft. Lauderdale, USA
There is nothing wrong with the pictures of Miley Cyrus. Insinuating that the pictures look like she was "freshly deflowered" is a product of a overcritical society projecting their oversexed views on a purely innocent shot. If anyone deserves and apology it is to Annie Leibovitz and Miley Cyrus.
Krystyn Kono, Hastings, United States
Miley and her parents were flattered. Annie was out to ruin Miley's good reputation.
I think Miley deserves another photo shoot and an apology from Annie.
Kathy, Houston, USA
Miley Cyrus's parents were at the photo shoot and saw the pictures. They all agreed that were excellent and OK'd the product. I can not help but think that this is a publicity stunt making something out of nothing. Remember any publicity is good publicity - infact there is no dirt here.
rcpmac, seattle, usa
I can remember when a then 16 year old model named Brooke Shields proclaimed "Want to know what gets between me and my Calvins? Nothing." Compared to what teenage parents hear and see everyday from their sons and daughters, its nothing. She is acting like a typical high school girl.
Hugh , Daytobn,
As a teenager, i would just like to say that if this picture encourages anything, it is eating disorders. The bones protruding from Miley's back are repulsive. She is nothing more than a puppet controlled by Disney, i see Leibowitz as more of a role model.
She has substance.
& a mind of her own.
Melissa, London,
I don't see that photo as sexual
'My kids looked up to Miley'
This girl has her own life too, so instead of whining about that, why don't you become a role model for your own children?
Is it because you'll blame 'role models' like her when your children do something bad and not take responsibility?
Livi, Harrogate, UK
these photos were checked then re checked by all offical people in her life. When an uptight public scoffed on these photos this is probly the first "contrivercial" press she has gotten, the real world is artistic and can see these are beautiful photos! Get over it everyone!
oshi, anytown, erie
I hate how this article compares Annie Leibovitz to 'dirty-old-men'. I'm sure it WAS actually meant to be an artistic shot. It's a bigger violation to dehumanize Miley by trapping her in a bubble of superficiality and falseness. She's a young woman and probably not as naive as you'd like to think.
Kat, Ottawa, Canada
Oh, please, get over it, all of you who are sooo offended. I took the time to look at the photos, have you? I see nothing that I would worry about my granddaughters (all under 10) seeing.
Paul, Vacaville, U.S.A.
Miley, bless her heart is NOT the adult here-ALL the adults should have first apologized to miley for being so immoral THEN the adults should have all aplogized to the public who have let Miley into their homes for their kids to look up to. This photo looks like it was taken by a dirty old man.
Chloe Hill, New York, USA
I am sick about the fact that my 7 year old granddaughter can not have a heroine to look up to. She loved Hanna Montana and now it looks as though Miley Cyrus is on her way to be another Britney or Lindsay. Miley, wise up!
Ronnie and Dick Bergeron, Perham, usa
How is this child abuse? She must have a PR team, aswell as parents who probably proofed the shots, No? Thede let them release if they are as bad as made out? The shots I've seen are taken in a way where their not sexual in the slightest, but as a photographer myself, maybe Im slightly biased...
James Alexander, Cardiff, United Kingdom
Look at all those cheering now ... let's realize that VF rolled the dice not thinking about the consequences. The group most influenced are elementary and middle school kids who will be talking non-stop. The onus now is on our culture (us) -- how will kids find morality, make safe choices, etc.?
john, San Francisco, USA
I can't believe people are going on and on about this! Some of you talk of Child Protective Services? There was no abuse going on here! This was a professional photo shoot done outdoors with a full staff and Miley's Dad present. She never disrobed, and is quoted as saying she liked the photos!
Roy Heintzelman, Kensington, MD, USA
In response to Sheila Lipsey's comment that Miley's parents should be ashamed and that the picture of her with her Dad is disgraceful, I ask this: What is going through your head? This is a picture of a father and daughter together! She's laying in his lap... so what? That's natural, not sexual!
Sheila Markham, Washington, D.C., USA
The Beauty of a body is beautiful, but not when it is a fifteen year old girl. Think of the many Men who read [look] at Vanity Fair. Its ashame that Leibovitz is in such desperate need to find such beauty that she would exploit the innocence of a young girl just to create this art.Times have changed
Kristal, Padgett, Yonkers, NY,
I agree that the photos are far too racy for a 15 yo. I find them tasteless. However, I have 2 daughters who love Miley. Is she my childrens role model? NO. I am. And because of that I filter what they see and my young daughters dont read Vanity Fair! What's all this "role model" hype? unreal...
David DiGenova, Salem MA, USA
Miss Cyrus was manipulated by the adults around her. How telling is it that she should be the first to publicly apologize. My heart goes out to her. She is to be praised for showing such bravery in facing this situation that she did not create. I certainly will not purchase this VF issue.
Robin Black, Barrie, Canada
" half-naked, smudge-lipsticked, knowing-eyed 15-year-old Miley Cyrus" (janice turner) says it all... Vanity Fair and all who were involved should know better... icky icky.. won't be buying it... suggestive poses should be for the 'adult', not the 'child'...
L Ring, nanaimo. b.c., canada
Re: C. Brito's "I cannot believe the low level of grammar..." I think you're referring to the comment made by Kahlilah of NY and you've grossly overlooked the fact that Kahlilah is probably a young girl-like most of Cyrus' fans. I've no problem w/the photos but don't forget we're dealing w/kids here
Abigail, Barcelona, Spain
Leibovitz works for Leibovitz - period. An ego as big as hers needs sustenance.
Vanity Fair? a faceless corporation like every other - the bottom line is the mighty dollar.
Miley realized the stupidity of it all after the fact, because she was on the wrong side of the lens - at least she did.
Thierry Jacob, Toronto, CAN
ART?? LOL Lets pretend for a minute that it not of Miley, how would you feel then? Half naked photo of a 15 year old. Call child services perhaps? Still "art"? OK? Now lets picture it hanging in your nieghbours shed? Still art? or would u make sure your kids don't play at uncle Ben ever again?
Vanessa, Durban, South Africa
I think this was blown way out of proportion. Leave it to the media to turn something into trash and shaming Miley and her parents. How many young girls read Vanity Fair ???? Parents, turn your blasted TV OFF and quit whining about what you don't want your kids to see. Leave that poor girl alone.
Gloria, Memphis,
So where is CPS on this one? Obviously too busy in Texas. This is child abuse and should be treated as such.
Jan, Olympia, USA
I guess inappropriate is in the eyes of the beholder. I'm a grandmother - it's a sleepy-eyed young woman clutching a sheet. If it was my kids, it would go in the family album, no problem. I know that some people think that just the notion of being in bed with no clothes on means sex, but really!
ruta.muhlberger, Bonfield, Canada
Just because it is Leibovitz does not automatically make it TASTEFUL ART. Consider this, if an average everyday "joe" were taking pics of young girls in this manner they would probably end up on the registered sex offender list. Miley's parents should get day jobs and stop pimping their daughter.
Theresa, Los Angeles,
I agree that the shot was a bit suggestive, however if you read the article on the VF site, she was not nude. She sat on a stool and had a top on under the sheet. Her parents and her grandmother were there. Remember, not everything is what it seems. Get a grip people, some swim suits are skimpier
Bow, Boston, United States
The shot of Miley is beautiful and done with taste. Though because of the context in which the photo is being used it becomes a target for criticism. I think that the only people to blame would be the ones at Vogue Magazine for the way the shot is being used.
Darkwolf, NBPT, United States
This is an outrage! Six year old little girls look up to Miley Cyrus. It is appalling that she has built her so-called 1 billion dollar Hannah Montana empire from innocent girls just looking for a role model. I think you do have a responsibility to your fans and those who have made you a star.
Michelle, Birmingham,
PLEASE! I am pretty sure Miley wasn't at the photoshoot all alone, so when Annie told her to strip, she could've just said no. Simple as that.
The problem is Disney's and America's fear of sexuality - that's why they keep these stars sheltered until they entirely lose their way.
Nikola, Novi Sad, Serbia
As a mother to a nine year old. I have had to contend with Britney's fall from grace, Vanessa Hutchings supposed Porn flick, Paris Hiltons definate "flick" etc. I have had enough. Miley was supposed to be the ONE that would be the role model .... whats next Miley? Same as the others??
Vanessa, Durban, South Africa
Sally Mann also "captured the confusing emotions and developing sexual identities of girls at that transitional age, one foot in childhood and one foot in the adult world." While Mann''s photos are more sexually explicit, Annie's knowingly play out the Oedipal conflict for maximum impact. Bravo!
A Fan of Reality, New York, USA
Leibovitz is wrong, very wrong. Vanity Fair is wrong. I hope the public does the right thing and hits them in the pocketbook by not buying the magazine.
Susan , nesconset, usa
R.e poster from Kelowna who states:"You should all read 'A Woman's Worth' by feminist writer Marianne Williamson." So a 15 year old is now a woman is she? Is sexualising a 15 yearold girl to sell magazines part of a Woman' s Worth then? Modern feminists certainly seem to have changed in that case..
Ted, LONDON, UK
Annie Leibovitz is not only a spectacular photographer, but an artist. I have seen many girls Miley Cyrus's age and younger more scantily dressed than this. I do believe the photos are beautiful and artistic. It is a real shame that our society cannot accept the beauty of the human body.
Holly, Valdosta,
First off, I cannot believe the low level of grammar utilized by the previous comments here. Secondly, Annie L.eibovitz is not a smut peddler - she is an artist. For anyone to feign outrage is ridiculous.
Get a grip. Stop feeding into the dumbing down of our society. Please!
C. Brito, Brooklyn, USA
Annie and Billy Ray (I won't even use the term Dad) should both be ashamed. The back shot I can accept, but not the photo with Billy Ray. That is disgraceful. He is beyond belief.
Sheila Lipsey, Clinton IL, Usa
Americans are sooo provincial and uptight. Miley should be as proud to share her beauty as she is to share her talent. There is too little beauty, and too many twisted concepts of morality in your culture. You should all read "A Woman's Worth" by feminist writer Marianne Williamson. Thank you Miley.
Allmen Quester, Kelowna, CANADA
We prosecute child abusers to the fullest (TX Sect?) yet we encourage child abuse on the covers of mainstream media. We really are sick.
Virginia, Arkansas, USA
Annie is a professional and respected AND she knows better than to do this manipulation of a young teenager and her family. Vogue is a much respected mag as is Annie so they should have known better than to think this was okay. I will keep my distance from both of them from now on.
Darlene, Milwaukie, USA
when i first herd about the story i was upset and i didnt think that it was true. so i had to findout. so i went on the computer and googled the story and now i know that the story is true. i am mad because i looked up to Miley she is my row model and now its hard to even call her a disney star.why?
khalilah , New york , U.S.A
I have been a photojournalist for over 20 yrs &I have an 11 yr old girl who LOVES Miley. As a photog I would NEVER allow such a thing in my studio. As a female who sees the perversion in ads, it is a shame that Annie, who shoots grown women this was ALL THE TIME, couldn't be creative w/ a child.
Christina, Phoeinx, usa
Have you ever been to a public beach or pool? Do you know what the girls there wear? Considerably less. This is not an issue of an artist taking advantage of a young girl, but rather the media attacking an artist for presenting the reality of today's youth through photographs.
Pete, Ithaca, United States
What you have said about the Vanity Fair photo comes from your own thoughts, not the image itself. If you are unable to see the natural beauty of it without the filter of sexualized preconceptions I feel sorry for you. Statements by you & people like you caused her embarrassment, not the lovely pic.
David Krolick, Albuquerque, U.S.
I agree 100%. Annie and Vanity Fair should be ashamed. Miley is only 15, and as a teen, doesn't always make the best decisions. They are old enough and experienced enough to know better.
Carol Sikes, Fort Worth, USA
where are those so called parent values, she talks so much about?
lee, montreal,
