An Arts Council-funded show, The Book Slam podcast, won best internet programme. The show, which accompanies a literary club night, has featured Will Self and Irvine Welsh.
The gap between the BBC and commercial rivals was reflected in the music and entertainment awards. Russell Brand, a controversial addition to the Radio 2 line-up, took the Entertainment Award while his stablemate Ross took the Music Personality prize for his Saturday morning show.
The organisers arranged a surprise for Chris Moyles by inviting the Leeds-born DJ's mother, Vera, to present him with his Breakfast show prize. Moyles has brought a record audience of 7.7 million to his Radio 1 show.
Brian Matthew, now entering his 60th year in broadcasting, won the Gold award. The Radio 2 broadcaster, who will be 80 in September, still presents Sounds of the 60s on Saturday mornings and has returned to the airwaves after a bout of illness.
