May 1964: Mrs Whitehouse launches her “Clean Up TV” campaign. Her first target is Sir Hugh Greene, the Director-General of the BBC, whom she claims is “responsible for the moral collapse in this country”.
July 1968: Greene announces his retirement and Whitehouse is given credit for his departure.
August 1972: BBC bans video for School’s Out by Alice Cooper in response to her protest. Cooper sends her flowers, thanking her for the publicity.
December 1972: Unsuccessfully tries to get Chuck Berry’s My Ding-a-Ling banned with claims that it encourages masturbation.
July 1973: Walks out of A Clockwork Orange after 20 minutes calling the film’s stylised violence “disgusting”.
April 1976: Describes Doctor Who as being full of “obscene violence and horror”.
September 1978: She is pelted with jam and cream pies as she addresses an audience on child pornography in Australia.
February 1979: Wins a libel action against Gay News for publishing a blasphemous poem about Jesus Christ.
July 1981: Attempts a private prosecution against Michael Bogdanov for the male rape scene in The Romans in Britain at the National Theatre.
May 1982: Criticises Bugs Bunny, saying the cartoon encourages violence in children.
November 1985: Claims EastEnders is not suitable for family viewing because of its marital infidelity.
May 1990: Condemns the children’s film Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles for its violence.
November 1995: Tries to get Four Weddings and a Funeral banned because of swearing.
